This video is very timely given that I have a bespoke consultation at Floris in one week’s time. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since booking it in April. Cheers Tom, and cheers to The Rake team.

Some medical detail: the olfactory system is the oldest (evolutionarywise) of our five senses and its information enters directly into the limbic system without being "filtered" by the thalamus before - so that's why scents lead to such a strong emotional reaction, positive or negative.

It’s a bit dated now (and never qualified as posh), but when I was barely old enough to see over the bar at my local pub and order my own pint, “Sunflowers” by Elizabeth Arden was very popular amongst London’s younger ladies. Here we are a couple of decades later and when I smell that scent I’m immediately transported to sunny days, wine in the park, bright blue eyes, and warm soft kisses. Scent, and music, rekindle youth as surely as any mythical fountain.

Scents evoke memory as well. My mum always wore Chanel no 5 and my father always used old spice and I associate those two scents with home.

Great to hear from "Mr Floris" himself about the processes and ingredients. I have been a devotee of Floris since working in St James's just before the pandemic. I am still using No.127. Apart from anything else, the scents themselves are not particularly expensive. You get more bang for your buck with proper fragrances rather than the mass-market stuff, where the budget clearly goes more on creating outrageously contrived advertising (however much I love the Gaultier ads for sheer entertainment value and humour).

Another wonderful video, this time about my favourite perfume house. First off, the music that was selected as Tom walked into Floris, made me smile. Instant thoughts of The Ladykillers, and the music that Alec Guinness, and his 'musician' friends were 'playing', made me chuckle. Loved every second of the interview with Edward, and I even sprayed myself with Golden Amber. A big well done to all the production team, Tom, and of course Edward, for granting the interview.

2:51 Ahem. Beg par'n Florisian Historian, but a little more practise needed with the local lingo. "The Practice" refers to the establishment, being a noun. "The practise of taking a..." refers to the act of doing so, being a verb. Grocer's's apostrophe next! Thank goodness someone knew about the pitfall for plenty of the population that is its ignorance of said apostrophe in that word. Whilst I'm still on my high horse, I'm going to bewail the pretty much ubiquitous "reboot" of misunderstanding single nouns describing plural subjects. 2:56 "The family still work[]" should have the original S of course. I fear that I'm on a hiding to nothing with this'un though!
