A German Deserter's War Experience
ANONYMOUS ( - ), translated by Julius KOETTGEN (1877 - ?)
The author of this 1917 narrative, who escaped from Germany and military service after 14 months of fighting in France, did not wish to have his name made public, fearing reprisals against his relatives. The vivid description of the life of a common German soldier during “The Great War” aroused much interest when it was published in the United States in serial form. Here was a warrior against his will, a hater of militarism for whom there was no romance in war, but only butchery and brutality, grime and vermin, inhuman toil and degradation. His story also contains the first German description of the retreat of the Teutonic armies after the battle of the Marne. - From the Translator’s Preface - Summary by Lee Smalley

A reminder to us all that war should be a last resort to protect freedom and not for conquest. In the end the basic soldier gets nothing but his life back if he is lucky. The people on the top will then benefit from the victory or the newly acquired land to get richer

I had two screws in my right ankle, and the military indoctrination commander told me, only one screw is allowed, to enter military service. So they kicked me out. You can't have two screws in your ankle, and enter military service. Who knew.

I wonder if he lived long enough to realise that communism was a flawed doctrine too? Capitalism doesn't cause wars. neither does communism, no political system does, the greed and selfishness of humans causes war and the greediest and most selfish will always rise to the top to start wars.

@@felipevillalobos1716 Appears to be obvious common sense, But I suppose you need to read a few lines of propaganda from ___________ (insert government or on-the-take media) to decide for yourself.

The state is cause of war,the power of few over rest. How they call their system of control does not matter. Simply, violence is cause of war. State is the face of violence. Take power of enforcement from gov and freedom will emerge one way or another, by itself and quick

The only way communism can work is if we have no emotion. Ants use communism by nature. They evenly distribute throughout the colony. They do not dream or hope or think about themselves. They just do what their instinct says and die. All that matters is the preservation of their queen. Humans, however, are greedy. No one can help that. Humans will always want more for themselves. Every communist country's downfall has been the simple fact that humans will always be selfish. It would take literally millions of years of consistent brainwashing for these instincts to be evolved out.

The narration was very flat ..... whereas the pace is read either just a fraction too fast or too slowly at various points. I'd been really looking forward to listening to this because the majority of soldiers in any war are basically just regular people who are forced to pick a side depending upon the luck of where they were born and the leaders of their countries, who always remain safety of their own homes, with full bellies and in comfort and warmth. Only psychopaths enjoy being soldiers in war!

Desertion is the bravest and most honored thing a soldier can do. If enough did, wars would not happen. Unfortunately, that's not in human nature. We are screwed.
