Shipyards in space engineers are underrated. Yeah you don't need them, but they help to store materials and construct the ship. The main reason why I like them is they keep your ship safe while it's under construction.

But it doesn't keep my welding ship safe, when its dancing around the ship :/

It also adds a bit of realism to, as technically they wouldnt build massive ships on a planets surface as it would kill a ton of fuel just getting it into orbit. If your going for that style of course.

Homeworld mobile shipyard was a masterpiece, think you can replicate it to space engineers?
@marinaramonk8641 Жыл бұрын
I once built a mobile ship printing station. It was built with a lot of modded cargo and would need a bit of reworking to bring it back to vanilla but it could print fairly large ships anywhere you wanted with no care about how long the ship was. All it took was a bit of setup. it was pretty cool might do the rework and put it on the workshop

Mobile shipyard or some kind of logistical support vessel like a tender or something is a necessity. So large transport vessel with dedicated machine shops and repair crews would be another valid option. While the mobile shipyard is nice, the larger requirements around supporting and keeping it functional is bit trickier, hence the suggestion of tenders and other support type vessels to supplement. Great example would be like modern day sub-tenders. They carry repair crews, machine shops, and supplies when subs need immediate and moderate repairs out at sea. By that say removing bad sections of pipping off and hoisting down new ones or removing a pump and repairing or swapping it out so the tender can try to work on it if parts are in short supply. In space engineers setting this might take the form of a light to heavy cruiser that isn't built for direct combat much like the shipyard here. Or even a frigate or a couple of frigates designed around this principle. Both would be smaller, faster, and capable of getting out of the engagement zone. Heavy repairs might be more difficult or any refits, but immediate and moderate support would be readily available and worthwhile investment in short term and long term. Short term if you were in the middle of war and had a number of these vessel types to address more ships and keep the lightly and moderate damaged capable with smaller turnaround times as far as repairs. Plus, they would be closer to the front lines since their capabilities are limited along with the fact that it would be less of a loss if say 1 or 2 of these support vessels are taken out over an actual shipyard. And long term for peace time when the demand isn't high and can be also used to assist civilian shipping after pirate attack and/or accidents of some sort. Mobile shipyards could be built as time goes on, but that would be more dependent on crew requirements and overall projection. By that how large of an area that you be in control of and is it necessary to have a handful of say 2-3 or would you need more in the double digits. The more you have, the larger the logistical footprint you need to have to support them. So, tons more supplies, larger crews, fuel, and the facilities to support them should they need it.

Wait, mobile shipyards are rare in space engineers? I mean, aside from planetside, where they truly would be expected to be rare. If anything, a truly stationary base in space is usually such because it is built to look like a "classic" space station, or because there is an asteroid involved. Bases with some very basic level of movement ability are not all that rare if you only look at space-based stuff. As are "motherships" that are basically the same as these "mobile shipyards" that also has a bunch of extra turrets attached and can actually maneuver fast enough to avoid 10% of what is being fired at them. People just really like the term mothership, I guess. But yeah, whatever you wish to call it (mobile shipyard, or even mobile drydock, may really be more accurate depending on the design, since motherships tend to disgorge their smaller vessels from a surface or their interior, and be more limited to the ability to repair and rebuild larger vessels). This Ironwing class is a nice, utilitarian look to it. It, even visually, is not trying to pretend to be anything but a basic space shipyard with some engines.

Captain I think RWI should invest in a few dozen of these ships for frontier space fleet maintenance and also construction.
@SephirothRyu Жыл бұрын
RWI definitely needs to get itself a mobile shipyard design to build a couple of. One of its biggest weaknesses is how centralized its ship building capacity is. Hmm, would an assymetrical design be good? Have one pylon longer than the other, and have the shorter one have a repair/production hanger bulging out of of the outer side of the shorter pylon. Something like that?
@Cooldude-ko7ps Жыл бұрын
Shipyards also go well with the nanobot build and repair mod in my opinion. As I think it might be unfair to put it on a moving ship but is fine for shipyards to build and repair stuff.

By "Tutorial on how to create huge ships," do you mean a guide of setting up the design and internal layout and such? Because the main thing about a huge ship is setting the layout up ahead of time. After that, its just... building the blasted thing, like any other ship. With smaller ships, you just generally can somewhat wing it if you want to without any prior plan.
