A Gimmelwald Stroll

Enjoy a quiet moment with me in Gimmelwald, a little traffic-free village in Switzerland surrounded by alpine splendor. It was the evening magic hour, and I was just poking around the village, in perfect peace. The sun sets early when the sky is squeezed between mountains.
BTW, it was a handful of discoveries like Gimmelwald back in the late 1970s that I called my “Back Doors.” And these gems were the special destinations upon which I established my business, which back then was called “Europe Through the Back Door.” I’ve noticed that I’m kind of sentimental when I visit now - and when they still tickle my wanderlust, it makes me unspeakably happy.

I can't even imagine living in some place so beautiful. Don't get me wrong, there's beauty everywhere and we get indifferent to what we see every day, but I can't imagine ever getting used to living in a place like that. Every day I'd look out the window and be awed. Thanks for sharing!

I went to Gimmelwald about this time of year 25 years ago, based on Rick's books. It was absolutely wonderful. I can still remember all the wildflowers I saw while hiking around

Hey Steve ...I have been watching you for a very long time and wanted to thank you for your dedication to travel and the videos you produce every year. You make it look so easy and fun. I myself love to travel ... got bit by the bug back in the late 70's when I was 16 years old. I try and go some place new every year. This summer Im heading for Thailand,Laos,Bali,Lombok,Singapor and France..Burgundy France. Southeast Asia would be a wonderful place for you to go.

ive been to gimmelwald twice, once 15 years ago, and again last summer. Aside from replacing the tiny funicular with a giant cable car able to move heards of tourist, nothing much has changed. For anyone interested in visiting i'd suggest going later in the afternoon, the sunlight is golden and the crowds died down. We wandered peacefully and purchased some homemade cheese and sausage from an honest shop.
