A GLIMPSE INSIDE A PALACE RUIN & A MEDIEVAL MANOR - Witley Court and Harvington Hall

Join me this week as I continue my trip from my time at Mill Cottage, with my final episode from the surrounding area. First, I head to Witley Court, once one of the grandest houses in England before it got ruined by a fire in 1937. Afterwards I visit Harvington Hall, a fabulous medieval moated manor house survival with no less than seven priest hide holes! More than any other house in the country.

Thanks again Stacy for another interesting video, I know these historic houses, Harvington Hall is only 20 minutes from where I live and I am fascinated by its history and priests hides, I used to visit there often and the cafe has been moved to a building outside because the floor was getting rotten after an inspection a few years ago.Thats the disadvantage of the moat.Keep up the good work Stacy, hope the family are well, take care.

Really interesting! The last place, with the priest holes, was this used in a film, specifically, a film where a priest hole was used, etc. I remember seeing such a film but cannot remember the name, and this last place looks like it may have been the one used.

I of course understand that it would be extremely expensive to redo this manor to it's original splendor, However I don't understand that no-body has done it! My absolute favorite manor in the UK (or the world)

Just curious if there's a reason they wouldn't clean those fountains? It seems like were not seeing them in all their glory.

They are cleaned but it's a big job. Last time it was done was about 5 years ago. I live nearby and took my twin grandsons to see the house and grounds. The Fountain was encased in scaffolding but there was also a viewing platform which you could climb and get really close to it. It looked stunning afterwards.

The house was Not gutted by the fire, in fact the fire was rather minor It was an insurance job that failed. Most of the contents were sold off and the house itself was auctioned off to a local scrap merchant, who proceeded to strip it of anything and everything salvageable. THAT is why it is now a ruin, not the fire. The church was bought as a similar job lot when one of the Foleys found an Italian Baroque church in London that was being demolished. It was stripped and all the decorations, including the ceiling art was moved to Witley and reinstalled into what until then had been a plain little building. My FIL always seemed to know more about the downfall of the Hall than the guides, but then, most of the local people of that era Did! It was better when it really Was a ruin. Far more evocative. But English Heritage cleaned it up and make money from it now, so there you go. The price you pay to keep what is left. The tearooms used to be great. All homemade stuff, with veggies, jams, honey and plants to buy from their gardens. Which were actually the old walled kitchen gardens of the house. Just remembered. An American artist was commissioned to do paintings when it was still a ruin and only strays, locals hippies and tearoom junkies knew where it was. I think he camped there. They were in Dudley Museum and Art Gallery for a while, but as that was closed in 2016 (?) I wonder where they are now? They were perfect! Asked by the local rag if the place was haunted, he just said ' You haven't looked at the paintings properly, have you?' No, there weren't little spooks peeking out from behind the cupolas But they Were there. Just as they were every time you went there. A presence, a memory. Heritage lost that when they sanitised it. I wouldn't let Heritage look after my dog's old kennel to be honest.
