This is the first purpose built Masjid in Norway. Located in the Gronland neighbourhood in central Oslo, approximately 15 minutes walk from the central station.
The construction for this Masjid was started in 1991 and it opened for the public in 1995.
The design and architectural style of the building resembles the Masjids of Isfahan. The walls of the Masjid are decorated with tiles from Iran. Many tiles have calligraphic inscriptions from the Qur’an.
The main prayer area is in the 3rd floor, and the women's prayer area is on the ground floor. The Masjid has a capacity for about 700 people and is the second largest in Norway.
Islam is a fairly new religion in Norway. In the late 60’s a lot of Pakistani immigrants came here to work in the oil industries, and Islam was introduced to Norway. Today, the Muslim population of Norway is around 180,000, which is 3.4% of the total population. Most of them are of Pakistani, Somali, and Iraqi descent.
