I didn't know you were an alcoholic, Joshi, but now having watched this video in full, I feel for you and I'm glad you're recovering. I lost my friend to drugs and alcohol in 2020. He drank alcohol and took pills, he always, always said that he didn't much care for his life and admittedly we all sort of took it all for granted. Those drugs overshadowed his life so much so that for 2 years I haven't had contact with him and couldn't figure out where he was. In 2020 I've found out after reconnecting someone else who was close to him, that Peter, my friend's name, died from overdose on 20th of February 2020, just 2 days before I reconnected with that person I've mentioned. Peter was found in his apartment slumped in chair, after taking pills and washing it down with alcohol cocktail. We went to his funeral. I rememeber asking the person I reconnected with a question - 'Do you think he regrets what he has said to me, five years ago? About not caring about being dead...?" The response I've got from them was "I hope... but its too late now" To this day I wonder if I tried harder if he would've still been alive or things could've been different. This video, the beginning bits, hit me so hard, hearing your story and I know this is a youtube comment section and I'm rambling into the void but good lord... Rest in peace Peter Dziemidok

There's nothing announced about McCaffrey not being in the remakes. They were announced years before his passing and he has worked with Remedy for over 20 years, they have a deep respect for him and he won't be replaced as Max, the mere notion of it is insanity. Even if he didn't get to record his lines before his passing, Remedy will just use high-quality versions of the original lines.

A lot of Remedy-era Max Payne fans shit on Max Payne 3 for a variety of reasons. The biggest one being that Max Payne 2 already ended with the note that Max Payne was ready to move on from the death of his wife. Ironically this "weak link" in MP3's theme ends up actually being more accurate to the depictions of trauma and depression. Depression always has these moments where you think you've let go, and moved on, but in reality that doesn't last very long and inevitably you fall back down into the slump, then you find alternative means to escape from it. Max lost his job, and lost two loves of his life and a child, he doesn't have a lot to do to escape from it except drink, and pop Opiates like it's 1800s China. It then becomes a never-ending cycle. Fortunately by the end of MP3 Max Payne 3 has the most accurate depictions of trauma, and depression in media (tied with You Were Never Here) which is saying a lot because the Houser brothers still used a lot of their marching band coming in and performing a song called "subtext is for pussies" writing cliches. Also a lot of people shit on the whole "Summer Brazil Setting" but Remedy actually intended to make four Max Payne Games in New York during different seasons. We got the Winter, and Fall games, and they had basic plans for games set in Summer, and Spring, unfortunately I guess due to a lack of interest, the publisher division between Rockstar and Remedy, and Sam Lake writing themselves into a corner with Max Payne 2's ending the plans got abandoned. Fortunately if the upcoming Max Payne 1 + 2 remasters are successful enough, we may actually get a Max Payne 4 set in Spring New York, though I feel that Max Payne 3 was a great enough sendoff, and gives Max a happy enough ending; after all Bahia is far better than the "Birmingham of the South Americas" Sao Paulo.
@educkwithfedora839923 сағат бұрын
I swear, you could actually make an noir style story that takes place entirely on São Paulo ( I'm specifically refering to the city ) this place can be pretty rough, criminality is very high and it's always raining, making the hopeful tropical ending take place in Bahia was a good call lol

It's very interesting to think that Passos was not only the perfect ally for Max, but it's a reflection of what his life would be like if his wife and daughter were still alive. Max even says this when the two are at the stadium: "I may of written the book of dumb ideas. But Passos sure wasn't afraid to quote from them." But this game is fucking beautiful in terms Max having his redemption and dragging himself out of hell to achieve it. A game that can easily be related to with people who have been at rock bottom or struggling with depression.

Then they decided not to, but the factories remained, so Taurus just bought them up

I disagree about the "bad twist" personally I think Desilva was talking out his ass somewhat. Victor didn't care about Max dying, he just wanted to write it off as "it was bad security" and no matter if it happened at the nightclub or at the office he'd still get the money

@@TheBigBlackJoshi I think it also comes down to the fact that the criminal conspiracy in Max Payne 3 is very ramshackled, with everyone fucking each over, you have commando sobra being tipped off by Viktor but then attacked by Cracha Preto, you have UFE plotting to kill off Cracha Preto now that organ ring is gone, you have UFE betraying Victor by tipping off the panaman terrorists, Cracha Preto not caring about Max being a fall guy and just being greedy to get the money, Cracha Preto being sent to kill Max as a distraction when they're about to be blown up by an UFE bomb, etc. like, one of the points is no one is loyal and they're all opportunistic backstabbers.

Regarding the plot, I believe that it is much more multi-faceted than what it appears to be on the surface level. The overarching aim was for Victor and Marcelo to get funds, which was being controlled by Rodrigo, as the eldest son of the family. As such, the younger Branco brothers' motivations were to gain money external from the family fortune whilst simultaneously trying to get Rodrigo to loosen the purse-strings on it. Therefore, prior to the beginning of the story, Victor was working with UFE and the Cracha Preto (CP) to harvest organs to obtain dirty funds (and used his relations with UFE to appear tough on crime and also harm his left wing political rivals) - whilst Marcelo laundered them. This leads to the Panama mission where I believe that AUP (the Panamanian paramilitary soldiers) learned about the funds to be laundered and wanted to seize it, leading to the raid on the yacht. Marcelo was able to escape with the funds. I don't believe the UFE notified the AUP - that was Max just speculating after seeing that dossier in the UFE Police Precinct. The kidnapping of Fabiana by the Comando Sobmbra (CS) was not orchestrated by Victor, but the interception of the ransom money drop off at the stadium by the CP, was. Max and Passos then try their best to get her back from CS, but were unsuccessful. Back in the office, Victor uses the chaos surrounding the kidnapping to arrange for the UFE to kill Rodrigo, gain sympathy from voters and become one of the heirs of the Branco fortune. One of the key points of his plan was to frame Max by ordering the CP to storm the office and ensuring he dies and erase all evidence. However, Max escapes and takes matters in his own hands. Marcelo and Giovanna attempt to pay Fabiana's ransom again, suggesting they are not in on the kidnapping plot or the theft of the ransom money in the stadium. The UFE invade the favela, round up and kill and capture the CS. CP is also involved via their purchase of more victims for the organ harvesting and tie up loose ends by disposing of Marcelo to leave Victor the sole remaining heir of the family's estate. Needless to say, Victor does not care about the sisters' fate. Post the hotel revelations, when Passos says he does not know about any organ harvesting, I believe him as he seems genuinely shocked. In addition, when he says Victor and Marcelo wanted to teach Rodrigo a lesson, I don't believe he means the kidnapping of Fabiana, as Marcelo is heavily implied to have a crush on Fabiana and Passos is the father of Giovanna's unborn child. I do not think they would have anything to do with the kidnapping plan if they thought the sisters could be harmed. I think oftentimes Wilson was guessing (and wrong) as a unreliable source of information, and thus is written more compellingly than you think. That being said, he is still a plot device to push the story along. However, he is not all-knowing and as a detective is piecing the story together, the same as you (as the player) and Max. For example, he is only making an inference that the CP let Max and Passos go, as he would have only been privy to rumours and the official police narrative. Wilson cannot know for sure about Victor's motivations for hiring Max or what they were doing in Panama. But he knows about the coziness of UFE and CP with Victor and the transfer of victims into the hotel. He has little evidence at that part of the game and can only speculate. Which is why we need to take what he says with a huge grain of salt. I also think that Max was originally genuinely hired as a bodyguard for the family by Rodrigo after previous attempts were made to kidnap his wife. However, Victor reasoned that he could pin the blame of Rodrigo's death in the office on Max for the reasons outlined by Wilson and pressured Passos into complicity by threatening Giovanna. This also explains why Passos was able to redeem himself after Giovanna is safe. TLDR; ultimately if you take the view that you cannot trust anyone as reliable narrators and make your own conclusions based on the web of "clues", then the story is more cohesive and enjoyable.

I completely feel your connection to the game Joshi. I was on the booze before even legally I could drink; then I was on the beans; it was a longtime before getting off that too. So just understand there's far too many of us than you'd think. Shame is a powerful motivator.. _But what you shouldn't be ashamed of is this video! I always knew you could lay off the gas but crank out amazing frenetic edits of combat or super absurd jokes that are JUST infrequently enough that you have way more of an impact._ *You absolutely can, and should, consider doing more earnest and "serious/pretentious" stuff compared to your older content. It's been the progression of many before you, and many since.* You absolutely have always had very poignant sections, or subtext of much deeper things you WANTED to say. I think this pacing is a great start: now consider your visual presentation as much as your writing.. and given your proclivity for evocative montages.. I think you can take a similar approach to even more understated and (ostensibly) "boring" sections. I know you can do it. Keep it up, one day at time. We all slip, but it takes true strength to acknowledge you fell and to commit getting back up.. again and again. _That's something Max particularly exemplifies in this game._ Please don't bring Max back Remedy.. even though I'm sure it'd be gas, but let Max rest..

Just do games you're passionate about, always stick to your guns and.. well hey, did you know MandaloreGaming made shitepost videos about Tribes back in the day before he was a "serious" reviewer? Joshi, this video was nothing short of bloody immaculate, mate. I randomly discovered you ages ago and the fact you're covering what is my favorite R* game ever made warms my heart (I never requested it, this was a pleasant bonus from a favourite creator of mine). You have perfectly summarized the story beats, the what-could've-beens, the gameplay, homages, tones and everything in between. On a personal level, I've had this discussion with my friends about why Max Payne 3 is so damn good as well as defending it's choices. As you noted, the graphic novels covered the gap in times between each game in it's own right. You touched on the fact he was at rock bottom and the comics really make it obvious that he lost his drive for living thanks to the retirement he was served, as routine often keeps people in check from self destruction. My interpretation? Despite all the trauma he endured being a cop, it was ultimately Max's reason to keep going, but losing it drove him backwards like an addict relapsing because of one change going against them. I'd go so far as to say that Max Payne 3's ending was the ending we needed more than the ending from Max Payne 2, as it did not give us a real resolution and dare I say, acted as more of a side plot that you could ignore entirely and go straight to Max Payne 3 instead (Just my opinion). It was also elating to read that Remedy themselves blessed and praised Max Payne 3, especially Sam Lake, which to me says more about the devs than the fan reaction to it all these years later. I get it, MP1 + 2 are classics in the field I heard it all before. The soundtrack is god-tier video game scoring. I went with a relative and saw HEALTH live here in Victoria (Australia) in August of last year. They performed TEARS towards the last quarter of their set, it was amazing to hear that and their other tracks live. Max Payne 3 was the reason I had discovered HEALTH and I am glad that R* commissioned them for more songs further down the track in GTA V. Their contribution to the radio in Cyberpunk 2077 (Major Crimes) is an amazing track that suits that world so well.

@@liluke395 certainly doesn't play like one--despite tired tropes of Bullet Time, diving through the air shooting two guns at once, hard-boiled protagonist with a rough past.. _but despite all that: the encounter design, the kinesthetics, the aiming, the heavy but methodical movement that leads to spectacular moments that are legitimate _*_CINEMATIC_*_ quality gunfights!_ It's absolute kino for fans of Hong Kong action, John Wick, The Raid, etc. But what's most impressive of all, despite without literally writing a 15k word dissection of every event from Max Payne 1 & 2 and how they relate to a meta narrative that defines Max Payne 3; its steeped in allusion, parallelism, subversions/aversions and finally, glorious reconstruction after THE deconstructive sequel to a classic third-person shooter character. I think Joshi didn't really, REALLY, steep and stew on looking at Max Payne 3 as an actual trilogy ompared to "it's another Max Payne game that tries to end the franchise gracefully despite not being made by the original creators", as there's an actual startling amount of pieces that make more sense removed from just as they function within Max Payne 3. *But ultimately what the game gets right on every level, is the shooting of dudes.* Like Joshi said you kill an absurd amount of goons.. and by God did they make it majestic and brutal. Absolutely perfect proc-gen animations (inverse kinematics?) from perfect points of impact with dynamic decals that spray blood before seeping into the clothes and floor--seriously, enemy gunshot wounds develop after they've been killed and begin swelling, darkening, etc. And only that is perfect because the sound design, sound editing and mixing is perfect for what you need to do: kill a frankly Paynful quantity of thugs. Only with all of these things, all clicking and humming in tune (and damn does that HEALTH soundtrack do a lot of lifting), is something that is superficially nothing special.. _but when you actually play the game, get into the rhythm of the story beats and set pieces going on and feel those rounds rip through flesh and bone, dude after dude, room after room, level after level with one of the all time great OSTs pushing you along this one man's preordained fate to be pulled along his strings to perform near superhuman levels of bloodshed.._ *_Only then you see--my God, it doesn't.. do anything I haven't seen before.. but this IS something special at the very least on a mechanical and short-term gameplay loop experience._* Max Payne 3 is what FEAR is for third person shooters in my opinion. I replay both regularly because there still hasn't been anything to scratch that itch the same way. And a big plus is you can knock out both in a weekend! I think Max Payne 3 got a bad rep even in the first few years, hell half decade or more by a lotta of either confused R* fans, longtime Max Payne fans (of which I am one as well, one of the first games I remember seeing in 3D was Max Payne 1 when I was 6 and I was gripped ever since) or just people who never played any other Max Payne besides this one--especially story wise and it's aesthetics choices, it was dealt a bad hand being released in the year and era it did with such a huge gap in both time and tone compared to the Remedy duologue.

the editing for this video easily rivals the absolute cinema that are all of this game's cutscenes if passionate video essays like this aren't too difficult to make in comparison to your other videos, id love to see more of these longer videos instead even if they take longer ♥ (of course with emphasis on "passionate", given you have other things as important to talk about as your personal connection with may himself as im sure it really elevated the quality of the video)

When it comes to Victors plan with pinning it all on Max, it was for whenever he was actually killed would they then blame it on him. In Panama during the crash smuggling Marcel and Passos are leaving without max because they assumed he was dead. If Max died anytime during the story it was then when Victor would blame the events on him but max and his painkiller alcoholism shield bullet time powers overcame and victors plans could never succeed.

I’m glad you were able to complete this video, and it seems to be helping you work through your inner demons. Your in-depth analysis style benefits greatly from your unique approach. I and probably many other viewers would love to see more content in this format, no matter the games (preferably those you have a special connection to, because this is where you shine as a content creator). Keep your chin up, Joshi, you’ve outdone yourself!

When i was at my most depressed and heavy drinking max payne 3 was my comfort game. Got like 400hrs on it even finished new york minute hardcore. Peak game, also max is so relatable if you put aside the massive shootouts and killing 100 dudes like its just another day .

Makes me incredibly happy to see someone else share the same enthusiasm as I do for this underrated entry. I always thought the story was similar to The Big Lebowski. Both have a protagonist past their prime who is thrown into this over complicated and easy to get lost in plot that they either do not care about or have no idea what's happening. Yet come out on top despite the insanity of it all. This video was an instant click, you continue to get better, keep up the swag videos man.

Damn bro, didn't think someone could make a video conveying my feelings for this game so well. I got clean in 2015 and I replayed this game that summer while I self isolated so it definitely hit harder the second playthrough for me aswell. Imagine how fkn cool it would be if they went and remade 1 and 2 with the euphoria engine then released all 3 Max Paynes in a trilogy set... now I'd pay 100$ for that long before I pay 100$ for gta6

52:49 Taurus slander will not be tolerated, the pt92 is produced in the same factories with much of the same equipment that Berreta used back when they had operations in Brazil

14:00 Trope de Elite mentioned 27:20 more like "Google Translator Brazilian Portuguese". At least the choice of words are fine within the context 52:47 fun fact, the Beretta clones Taurus make in Brazil ( before they started producing the TS9 pistol some years ago) it is one of the safest handguns they ever made. In the 80's, Taurus managed to buy some production plant from them and their machinery tools. Since the design is from Beretta itself and not from them, it is "safe as hell" instead of some other bullshit they make (the 24/7 pistols in particular, aka full auto Micro Uzis that are disguised as pistols). Also, the FAMAE(?) are OG SIG licensed clones from Chile, which are still in use at least with some cops in São Paulo Polícia Civil 1:06:04 not exactly "German minority" but during Getúlio Vargas time in the 1930's and 1940's, the Brazilian government did a massive stimulus for immigration for Europeans to populate our Southern region, which a lot of Germans and Italians came. To this day there are cities and communities in the South with typical german architecture in housing, due to this. Also during the previous century, a lot of Japanese also came (BR is the largest "Japanese colony" on the planet), along with Lebanese and even people from former Yugoslavia

As a Brazilian, I like how Rockstar portrayed Brazil in this game, but I feel that there are some pretty glaring flaws that are worth noticing for a foreigner who has never seen what Brazil is like. First, the voice acting for all the Brazilians is not done by native speakers, but by Americans who live in Florida/California and who know how to speak Portuguese, so for us, it's really strange to see them saying the words so correctly, even though we've never spoken like that, lol, and the pronunciation/accent makes it all even funnier. Second, it's about how they treat the favela. Yes, they treat it with respect and portray it as it really is, but I can't help but be dissatisfied when they basically say that the game is set in São Paulo, when the reference photos the team took were taken in Rio de Janeiro. So it's quite different what the favelas of São Paulo are really like, even though, in general, they are "the same" And finally, it's like the "Brazilians are aggressive and swear" approach has really gotten to me hahaha, yes they are the enemies of the game and so on, but man, I get tired of the fact that every time a Brazilian appears in American media, it's always a person who swears, is dirty, aggressive. But, apart from that, great video Yo...JOSHI, I really liked it!! (I admit that you rekindled the flame for me to replay this game for the third time already, thanks)

Love this game so much, love this video so much. I, too, return to this game quite often. That combat + music + vibe + McCaffrey's performance is like CRACK to me lol. I also love the original two games (the first one, especially), and I cannot wait for the remakes. Although, yes, McCaffrey will be sorely missed. He was soooooo good in these games, AND in CONTROL, and Alan Wake II. Oh man, he is SO GOOD in AWII. It really was a great sendoff for the man. Can't wait to see what Remedy is cooking. Glad to hear that you're doing well, mate. Keep at it!
