Butcher Bay was fairly well known when it originally launched on Xbox. The popularity of the films at that time, and a included demo on one of those discs didn't hurt. The remaster on Xbox 360/PC with Dark Athena included however was well under most people's radar only a few years later after the 'Vin Diesel Craze' (when he had to be in every movie) that _Fast and Furious_ started, had blown over.

Isn't The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay considered the best movie tie-in game of all time? Though admittedly movie tie-in games are rarely good and are usually quite terrible. It wasn't _"unnoticed"_ in the least. The issue is that most people where not playing OG Xbox at that time or subbed to game magazine and following this stuff. Don't let this distract you from the fact Johns, a drug addict with shaky hands and dubious morals, somehow managed to capture Riddick on his own multiple times. Vin Disel was even more involved in this. StarBreeze didn't develop this alone, but codeveloped it with Tigon, which was a studio Vin Diesel founded. Vin Diesel really have invested quite a bit of money into Tigon for quite a few years. He was involved in development of characters and helped with the story. Riddick was much for him like Geralt was for Cavill, only Vin Diesel managed to get a bigger role in the Riddick universe, while Cavill got tossed in the trash by the leads.

Some other forgotten gems in my opinion: Armed and Dangerous Citizen Kabuto Battle Engine Aquila EOE: Eve of Extinction (One of the more subjective games in my list as it has a strange story with the reveal that your wife's soul was put into the weapon you have been using, much like the Bionic Commando reboot that failed. I did like that it was basically just being able to switch between Soul Caliber weapons on the fly to create different combos.) Whiplash

Parry in Butcher's Bay works through mirroring the enemy attacks - if you're getting right hook, you can parry it with left hook and vice versa. And you can't parry attacks from heavy weapons with light weapons. Also, you totally can cheese all the shootouts with a pistol - first shot always goes to the laser dot and you can pop headshots with ease. Really glad you've enjoyed these games.

Man, Talking about the Riddick games reminds me that I still want a *_The Darkness (1)_* remaster on Steam/GoG after all these years!
@JackWse
@JackWse Күн бұрын
So you can actually get this on the internet archive, as it sits in the grayware.. it's a little problematic to get running, being the 32-bit version... It was the version that was on GOG, and you'll need DX wind in order to get it to run with proper support, and then there's some command console stuff that you're going to have to do probably to fix some of the bugs that never got fixed, there's a PC gaming wiki that is pretty useful in this case, it's all stuff that I remember having to do back in '09 '07 era.. I also highly recommend downloading a mod that removes the consulitis smear from the sequel, making it look as crisp and as beautiful as butcher Bay did, but with all the enhanced animation of course.. I do not recommend playing the original butcher Bay, as the gameplay has been significantly refined and improved for that playthrough with this sequel remastered, including that fluid lean that you would see in Wolfenstein etc.. and a lot more refined combat animation and whatnot.

Wait, seriously? I thought vin diesel himself still held the license so it wasn't legally abandonware. Sucks that only the 32bit version is available though
@JackWse
@JackWse 23 сағат бұрын
@@mungologgo5526 now as for the IP, that's different than the the ability to sell the game, that's part of it but it's it's not what the problem is here, I think that had more to do with universal wholesale dumping their video game division I believe this was picked up by Atari, which is really cool cuz night dive actually is owned by Atari.. So if ever there was.. But I think it's a little more complicated than that but it is basically grayware. The reason it's the 32-bit version, is GOG had the 32-bit version, so it's the only DRM free one.. there was a reason they had the 32 bit version though, and it may have to do with the 64-bit one having even more problems, otherwise they would have had the the 64-bit version which was the default on disc when I bought it back in the day... Someday I'll figure out how to crack the DRM and see what the difference is but, what I'd like to do personally is upload a more complete version of the 32-bit version to internet archive that has all the settings tweaked out so that people don't have to mess with it cuz you know modern gamers can't figure anything out these days beyond hitting one button and hoping it works.

this strange looking, 2004 to 2005ish, glossy-smooth looking visuals era just before the Xbox 360 came out is one of my favorite eras in videogames (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory(best stealth game ever made), F.E.A.R., Condemned, Doom 3) yet I never played either Riddick game, seems like I should remedy that. This game is exactly what I like, yet I never played it even though I've known about it since release.

Here's the thing. When I was about 14 or so, I bought The Chronicles Of Riddick. It's one hell of a fun movie. Peak Vin Diesel. I love his work from that era. And when I found out that there's a playable demo on there for my Xbox, I lost it. This game looked and played incredible. This was something else. I only got to play it when they re-released it on the PS3. And, my god. This re-release is tits. To me, this is one of a kind experience.

Man I loved Escape from Butcher Bay. Playing as a badass Riddick in prison was a great opening plot. Then you add in the great first person melee (which is rare, only a few games do it well) and the simple but fun stealth and an excellent story. Just such a great game, especially for XBOX 360 days.

Knowing that MachineGames was essentially Starbreeze 2.0 was exactly why I was so sure that I would love The New Order and, later, The Great Circle. These guys are the KINGS of taking an existing property and making the perfect videogame counterpart.

Here's the thing, the first time I played it and reached the guard quarters I completely missed the disguise so I just crouch stealthed the whole section and the game just accounts for that and lets you proceed. Also the purgatory prison in Mass Effect 2 is totally ripped off from the mines (there's even an older concept showing the mines with the container units stacked horizontally, just like Purgatory)

I remember my dad raised me on pitch black and the chronicals of Riddick, like he took crying baby me into the first one in 2000 or 2001. By 2008, I was playing the demo for this game on the chronicals movie disc and that lead me to hunt it down at GameStop. Definitely belongs on an ‘Underrated Greats’ list

I remember back in the days when i recommended GmanLives (Gggmanlives) to play Severance blade of darkness (third person game) and Escape from butcher bay. I recommended Severance blade of darkness because he had a Tenchu video. Anyway, GmanLives commented back saying he wasn't really making videos on third person games anymore, but focusing FPS games. A little later back then, he did make a video of Escape from butchers bay😁The game was one of my favourites on the OG Xbox. So cheers once again from Sweden mate! From a long time fan of the channel ❤

Riddick EFBB on the original Xbox is one of the few FPS games that meshed so many styles of play together and it felt fantastic. Great shooting, stealth and even a bit of fighting made for an amazing experience. Here's hoping we can get the Nightdive treatment for this incredible game sometime in the future!

When you mentioned combat, all I could think of was the early version's "combo" where you could spam left hooks at a frequency of one hit every 0.4 seconds. It made some fights super trivial, like the one against Rust.

I still load it up at the face Rust chapter or Dark Athena's berthing just to go through those melee gauntlets again over and over. The melee system was amazing, you could do combos, stun enemies to get behind them for an instant kill, set up counter attacks...I love it, one of the best FPS melee ever.

If I remember correctly (Last time I played this game was 18 years ago or so), the parry system requires you to time the attack as well as the direction in which the attack is coming from. I might be wrong, but I remember getting pretty good at it back in the day and I think the direction of the attack was crucial for it.

Absolutely loved playing this at my mates as a kid. Had no idea they then did The Darkness (easily in my top 10 if not 5 games; I was an edgy teen), but watching this video now it's so obvious. The bits where it's just two characters talking and the background going on as always is just so The Darkness. Brilliant vid as always
