Hi from Australia, am a retired diesel mechanic ( now 78) and worked on Detroit's for over fifty years. It is good to see you going about the correct way to start that 4/71 Detroit in the cold. WE used to fit heater elements in to either the sump or radiator to warm them up, I hope that you did not use ether as it ruins the engine, another way is to wrap a bit of rag to a length fencing wire dip it in the fuel tank light it and hold it over the air intake as you crank the engine saves starter motors and batteries.

We live in central ND USA there were a couple times in 2019 it got -40 and we started a 1968 IH #60 hough with a v6 cummins(used to feed the cattle) . It was parked in an unheated shed . It had a block heater in it so we put a battery charger on it for a few minutes then took the air filter out and blew hot air down the intake and a little shot of warm ether and it fires right off. We have used the hair dryer trick many times. Even had a couple of guys in town have trouble starting their walk behind snowblower so I told them take a hair and warm up the carb a little then blow some warm air in the intake and they take right off.

Love the old Austin-Western Super 300 [6-wheel] motor grader !! Thinking of buying a 1969 Pacer 300 [4-wheel] with the 4-71 Detroit Diesel two-stroke engine....6000 hours. You may have just convinced me to do it. Got to love the 4-wheel drive and steer capabilities. Get earmuffs for the entire family. Tinnitus is bad news...for life.

I used to own an old 60s model 118 Galion with a 4-71. I would use ear plugs and muffs too, yet it would still blast. It was as though there was vibration that penetrated everything. Yes, I have bad tinnitus, but I've learned to cope. No choice.

My grandfather had a grader like this one back in the 1970's. I wish he had taken for a ride in it. He was hired to build roads, and to snowplow in the winter.

I miss the good old days on the family farm, get hammered with snow. Spend all day boosting the tractor and warming it up the same way only we used a Coleman 2 burner camp stove and a blanket..clean our driveway and then head to the neighbors 2 miles down the road...good times

Just found your channel I from Atlantic Canada and work for the DOT I plow in the winter and run grader the r rest of the year. Before doing this I drove tractor trailer for 15 years I had a couple Detroits and your right they don't like the cold. To bad you couldn't get your self setup with a front plow V-plow or even a one way it would make your plowing a lot simpler but hay work with what you got great video got you subbed up.

One of the advantages the AW graders had was their front wheel assist. Allot of counties used them for this reason.

simple solution, put in a block heater and park closer to the ele when it's going to storm.. been doing it with tractor for years,, if bitter cold and going to snow, I even have the charger so it will go on an hour before daylight, for many years I spent a couple hrs every time it stormed getting the things running., even used to take the battery inside nights so it would be warm.. got old, got smart. hope you haven't burnt up your truck battery or alt or grader starter yet..

Not exactly the right tool for the deep snow, but it gets the job done. I would like to see it with a V plow on the front. Set it just below wheel centerline to cut down the bigger drifts, then it might do quite well thru deep snow. I'm always in for some Detroit Diesel music though.

Can you “roll” the mouldboard forward on that machine? If you can get the cutting edge completely perpendicular to the ground or even further forward, it greatly reduces digging into the soil.

@offgridathiddenhills40793 жыл бұрын
The road is pretty uneven with lots of ruts. We find it easier to use the grader because the blade is in the middle of the machine instead of the 5 ton truck. The blade would be way out front and it would dig in going up and down the hills. Thanks for watching
