It's a Pressure regulator. It lowers the water pressure down to an amount the birds can drink from the nipples. It's really not needed in this setup, but if you had this hooked up to a garden hose you'd need it otherwise activating the nipples would send a stream of water everywhere. It should also have a bypass valve to flush the water lines. There's a gasket/diaphragm in there which I suspect is broken.

I agree with the others that it looks like a pressure regulator the vertical rod looks a floating dipstick that indicates the water level in the tank that can be seen from a distance

Just a heads up on that regulator: it is not designed for full domestic pressure. I have made that mistake before, it is designed for 10psi or less to drop pressure to the 1psi nipple drinkers typically require. A leaky unit is a sign it has been hooked up to mainline pressure in the past. When I've retrofitted buildings into winter housing for poultry I use a brass main pressure reducer to drop the pressure from 40-60psi (pretty standard on a well setup) down to 10 psi, then I use the reducer on the nipple line to get it down to 1-2psi. If you hook one of these up to msinline pressure it will usually work for a while, then one day you go into the barn and water is spraying everywhere. That gravity fed mobile nipple system could probably operate without a regulator.

We've had chickens for years never had a problem with hawks and full grown chickens if they're out at night owls are a threat, our biggest problem was coyotes and bobcats, also chickens stay around the roost as long as it supplies the basic necessities such as food, water and protection they're not quite as dumb as people make them out to be.

Thanks good info, I got a travel trailer I'm going to convert to a hen house, and I like idea no fences, did you get your chickens as babies and always let them roam about?

The red end piece is a pressure regulator. Takes incoming pressure from 30 psi to ~5 psi. There is a knob on the bottom to adjust it. The clear tube allows you to see how high/low the pressure is to the line by the height of the water in the clear tube. Commercial poultry houses use these all the time. Plasson and Lubing are major brands if you're looking for this set up.

🐥🐤🐣We looking at pressure reducing valve or flow master pressure regulator that can go from the normal house level to very low for the nipple waterer. 🐓🐔🦃
@threeyees6 жыл бұрын
Zeljko Serdar that's what I was thinking. Maybe a float to show what the pressure is coming out of the tote, then a reducer to keep the nipples from shooting out water

Diego, is that a Pressure reliever?

Great setup. How are these guys dealing with extreme cold where the water freezes and heavy snow that keeps the hens from ranging?

I am thinking that’s a pressure regulator. The chicken tractor is an old cotton trailer.

I need that IBC reducer to go to a water hose, any idea where to get one? Or what it is called? I went to 3 local water shops and they said they have never seen anything like it before.
@chrisodell62486 жыл бұрын
Jake Martin. Ziggity Systems has a pressure regulator like the one in the video.
@grassfeeding60736 жыл бұрын
Jake, I would imagine the IBC tote is threaded to a fairly standard thread. Figure out what that is, or take a couple pictures with a ruler next to it and go to your plumbing supply store. Then can most likely come up with a series of fittings to reduce you down to 3/4 hose, I would suggest including a valve on the setup. You can also buy the fitting online as a complete part, just google "IBC tote fitting". I would caution against this route...in my experience it is always nice to be able to source replacement parts locally when something goes wrong.

I think it's doable in the right market, but regardless that isn't the goal for this person.

Wish you had talked to someone and found out the numbers.. I am looking for a set-up for 100 to 200 birds. I would rather learn from someone doing it instead of over or under building.
