Great! Additionally it is helpful to remember that the mechanism that gets the vocal cords to vibrate is NOT air, but electrical impulses from the brain. Knowing that will revolutionise the way that students think about the voice and make it even more easy to do the inhale-inhale that you talk about.

Arden? I wanted to tell you! Today I practiced Disco Descent on lip trills while thinking "Inhale, inhale." For the last several days, I have just been doing simpler vocal exercises with this whole "inalare la voce" mental concept. Arden, Disco Descent feels completely different than it did a week ago! Without listening, I can't say for certain. But, it felt much easier! I think I am getting it! I had to let you know about this! THANK YOU so much! Love, Susan

My father told me this when I was a kid. And I often feel it! I use so little breath and it feels like I'm breathing in through my nose as the sound is coming out of my mouth. Your hand gesture at 8:20 is exactly what it feels like to me, that the air is coming in through my nose as I sing. Funnily enough (I just tried it) I can even feel this with my mouth closed while humming! I've never thought about the abdomen before but then I never ever understood how to feel the support until yesterday when I saw your videos for the first time! I will give that a go too. ❤

I noticed that I used the inhale inhale long before.I thought it was a bad habit and switched to pushing the voice out to the front because I also wasn't satisfied with how nasaly I sounded with it but all it needed was the right breathe support and now when I tried it again I found that it isn't even nasal singing it's just how my actual singing voice sounds like. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I'm still wondering if you have to stay expended while you sing or not.

Hi, Can you speak to Jeannie Deva’s method, namely Rib cage expansion. Can you compare / contrast your method with hers PLEASE ? I’m asking because her method I feel is the same, just using different imagery as you put it, but I think hers gets to the root of it all, more plainly. Expand the ribs n keep them expanded as you sing. In this context I feel these are the same. Her excercises which target direct and intentional strengthening and expansion of the ribs I think will bring someone up to speed very quickly, rather than somewhat indirectly with other methods. I’m a beginner btw and I am only guessing.

As always, your vids are great and much appreciated, Arden. May i ask: do you yourself worry about keeping the ribs totally expanded? I think i kinda do a halfway-thing, where they're not collapsed per se, but they definitely (upon the renewal) go out a little more. Cheers, jeff

Heard this idea a little bit ago and it really helps. The "don't reach your max expansion right away" was interesting to me. I thought it was more like, inhale as much as you can and then continue that cue to stay expanded as much as you can. Is there a benefit to literally not fully expanding during the inhale and doing it before a hard piece of a phrase? Or is it more of a mental thing to really allow yourself to stay expanded on those phrases where you are more likely to collapse? Thanks again!!

Hi Arden, this is a terrific video. I've heard Thomas Hampson talk about keeping your rib cage up (not "forcing it up, of course), as well as about having the sensation of inhaling while singing. I tried what you suggested about drinking in the sound, and it definitely helped. I certainly have a lot to learn about this - but yours is the first video I've found where anyone talked about it (other than Thomas Hampson, but he didn't discuss it in the context of how to do it). I'm a huge fan of Thomas Hampson, by the way. I'm working on "Avant de quitter ces lieux", and for me, his interpretation is second to none of those I've heard. I had a question about Apoggio. I listened to that video as well. At this stage, what seems to happen is that my rib cage remains more buoyant, but the lower abdomen feels like it's narrowing, changing from the shape of a cylinder to the bottom of a cone - getting narrower. You talk about leaning out. If you have any thoughts for an image or a way to approach that I would be very interested.

So mam help me out plzz if you see this. So we technically have to do nothing but just to think apposite of pushing voice out by contacting the ribs and that will make the air out in a relaxed way. Or did I get the wrong idea??

Colton Ruscheinsky Hi! I haven’t completely solved my problems, but I have made significant progress. I started working with a new teacher in January who helped me with taking very deep breaths. At first, they were probably overcompensated, but it helped stretch my lungs and strengthen my core muscles. My teacher had me sing the same exercises every week that require one breath, so I could gauge how much air I need and whether or not I’ve gotten better at controlling my rate of exhale. I also made sure to be mindful of my posture. Standing and singing against a wall helps. I have also had a consultation with Arden about mental blocks that have kept me from conquering these issues and joined her FB group. I highly recommend calling her if you’ve had some training but are otherwise at a standstill. Even if you don’t end up working with her, she’s very intuitive and supportive.

Dear teacher, I'm more and more confused every " sound"..😅 Tired of seeing great women singers, over weigh body with a kind of ballon in their abdominal part and their breast almost reaching the throat...but singing as a birds.. I'm so worry about; my abdominal part, belly bottom, ribs, appoggio, breath support, larynge, vocal cords. Please, who in earth will it be able to sing...

First of all I'm no pro, I'm just like you browsing the internet for knowledge and what I'm going to tell you could be false. I was just as confused as you, when I watched her videos. And although I think Arden is a good coach I think she fails to get one point across. the point of appoggio is not to not contract your breathing muscles at all, but to delay their contraction (this is how most people explain it). the contraction is what initiates the exhalation in the first place. How fast your muscles contract is what determines how much air gets leaked and by gaining control over that you can adjust this to your needs. For the most part what you want is fairly little air in a constant manner, meaning you need to learn to let your breathing muscles contract slower than they would in everyday breathing.
