During pregnancy when the placenta produces increased levels of GDF15, could it be a response to dietary nutrient deficiencies? Increasing GDF15 to aid in essentially recycling mom’s old cells into constituents to grow new cells for baby? Could increased GDF15 in effect be a call for either 1) increased nutrients in the diet or 2) a forcibly induced autophagy?
