A Guide to Ston, Croatia

Affectionally dubbed by locals as the ‘city of salt’, the medieval town of Ston is alluring, charming and incredibly historic.
Most famously known for its wall, Ston hosts Europes longest preserved stone wall stretching 5.5km and was built in 1333!
Developed to defend the Republic of Dubrovnik and peninsula, this incredible structure can now be walked by all travellers near and far.
There’s much to Ston besides its wall, which include landmarks such as the Cathedral of Stain Blaise which only reopened to the public in 2017, Veliki Kastio fortress which predates the city’s fortification system, and the Church of St Nicholas which holds the accolade of one of the most charming architectural ensembles of Ston.
Ston also famously holds another honour throughout the town in the form of salt flats!
With a history spanning 4000 years, Ston’s Salt Works dates back to the 14th century and still produces salt the same way all these centuries later.
As one of 3 in Croatia, Ston’s location is the oldest in Europe and quite possible the world!
