I definitely think you should recommend people to try armies on Table Top Simulator if they have a PC. Its a super easy way to try all of the factions and learn the game with only spending $20 or spilt the cost with 4 friends(for $60) interested in the hobby as well. Its just a great way to learn if you are even interested in the game itself.

Tabletop Simulator is definitely a cost effective option that I missed in my initial script. I think it'd be the first thing I made sure to add if I was able to redo the video. The only downside is not building/painting your own models but for those interested in playing and not modeling it's definitely the go-to. Plus if you're good with 3d models or mod making, you could just import your onw models if you really wanted lmao

@@TheLichsLaboratory For me this is really dependent on what kind of hobby you are looking for. IMO if you really want to play the game you should go out of your way to use TTS because the learning curve is insane and the rules constantly change anyways. its best to learn what you want fast and to pick it up for fairly cheap. any army that has over 500 pts is going to cost you around $100 and thats if you buy the combat patrols which are discounted.

Thank you! And yeah, like I tell people: it's a cool hobby and it sucks that some people feel like they're priced out when GW used to be much more budget friendly with loads of scratch build tutorials and money saving conversions. Now they'll sell a single HQ for 40 bucks after tax which is just ludicrous. I wanted those curious people to know that there were other options other than full price

As a gunpla builder who got into miniature painting around 2018, the biggest shock in the transition is probably the price. Like a Space Marine Captain on a tiny sprue costing as much as a RG kit is downright ridiculous. But with that being said, I now have 15k points of various 40k armies lol

If you want to keep it relatively cheap(ish) I would recommend either getting a 3D printer, finding a decent recaster or just using 3rd party proxies. However, I would start with a small 300 - 500PT team (according to 3rd/ 4th editions!), as A, not only are older editions far cheaper B, they're also very stable compared to what Nu-GW pushes out and very importantly, are much more fun. Or something like the 1st edition of Necromuda, in which having a fast, fun, fluid game matters far more than torny play.

It'a definitely cheaper, but that's also a whole other skill set to learn. I use 3d printing a lot for my conversions but it's also understandable that some people can't or don't want to mess with slicing software and resin printers

Just finished watching both videos. Amazing work on both of them, not only from a hobby standpoint but also a basic explanation of the lore and how to get into learning it. I am, curiously enough, getting into both of these, with 2 Gundams built on my shelf, and playing quite a few Warhammer 40K videogames (okay, mostly Dawn of War but you get me) and these videos were thoroughly entertaining and informative. Good work, and I shared them both with my Gundam/WH fan friends.

For a Gundam Fan, here's how the "War" part in both series is handled. In Gundam, a million dies and both sides of the conflict will lament the loss of life and how pointless war is in the end. In Warhammer, especially 40K, someone will see that statistic and think, "I can do better." For newcomers, both Gundam and the general person, I recommend Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain book series. It's got the general gist of 40K but with a more tongue-in-cheek view of the grimdark world it tells. Still, as humorous as the series is, it still treats the world with great care and can help ease a newcomer with the fun nuances and factions of the world of 40K.

A veteran player's tips to getting into the game (IE: If you intend to play instead of getting just a couple models to paint) without absolutely breaking the bank 1. Try buy from 3rd party stores if you can (IE: Not the Warhammer Store) many sell the models at the max 15% discount GW allows. If you are lucky sometimes stores will offer unsold stock for less than this. 2. Building an army list before you start running out and buying all the boxes is super helpful for limiting impulse purchases (2000pts or 100PL preferably). One large box or two/three units is fine but its good to have a plan of what exactly you intend to use so half your army doesn't permanently sit on a shelf for (insert reason here). 3. Some armies are just more expensive than others to collect based on what they need and the amount they are sold by, generally more elite unit armies cost less to collect. Personally I would stay away from imperial guard (Especially Tempestus Scions) and genestealer cults if you don't want your wallet to get tortured or you intend to collect them very slowly. 4. Play the other games like Kill Team at first. They cost a lot less to get into than Sigmar/40k proper and the models often do transfer to their larger games.
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 2 жыл бұрын
Imperial Guard gets a lot easier to collect (on the wallet) if you buy third party proxies. Wargames Atlantic, shown in the video, is one of the best options for this. Not only giving way more infantry for a fraction of the price per kit, but giving bulk discounts and free shipping on orders over $50. The "Cannon Fodder" box is probably the best deal here at 30 models per $35 (unless you want to try kitbashing the 40 model Afghan Warriors historical kit). They look like budget Cadians, the poster children of the Imperial Guard, which makes the Cannon Fodder good for flavoring as planetary defense forces. (You can also model and paint them as Penal Legion, if that's your thing.)
@mk-ultraviolence1760
@mk-ultraviolence1760 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bluecho4 As much as I like Wargames Atlantic and other 3rd party stuff I think if you are just starting out with the game the first army you collect should be official stuff (as expensive as it is) to keep it simple when playing the game and know which places and people allow what kind of models.

3:09 - Games Workshop extends back to, like '78 or '79. They just sold other companys' fantasy miniatures back then, and published game ideas in White Dwarf magazine. They created HeroQuest and SpaceCrusade first, then Warhammer came in '83. Of course that's just supplemental detail beyond what you need to know for here. 3:45 - It should be noted here that Games Workshop is currently developing a return to the WFB setting (albeit several hundred years in the past) called Warhammer: The Old World. Like Warhammer: The Horus Heresy (AKA 30K) does for 7th Edition 40K, TOW will be bringing back the setting and game mechanics of the original fantasy game with new model support. 5:16 - To be clear, the universe of Age of Sigmar is the direct descendant of the old Warhammer World, with some of the heroes of the End Times being reborn as gods in the Mortal Realms. 6:35 - I believe the word he meant to use here is 'subfactions.' 7:28 - I'd also highly recommend Space Marine. You really feel like you're in the power armor of a Space Marine, plus the long pined-for sequel is currently in development. 7:46 - The Vermintide games are set during the End Times, so they're a better view of the end of the setting than the setting as a whole. 8:35 - Let me say here that you DON'T need to get into the games to get into the hobby. Plenty of people just get into the lore or the miniatures divorced from the other aspects. Heck, the manager of my local Warhammer store built and painted the models for 12 years before getting into the game. 11:11 - The Rule of Cool. The only rule you need to care about to get into the minis. 12:41 - Unless you're buying one of GW's big box sets (not usually 'high' point value. Usually more like medium). You get one of those, you're generally paying 25-40% (or greater) less than you would buying the units individually. 16:20 - Guy's being a bit of a pessimist here. Sweeping rules changes typically only occur with new editions, which usually have a 4-5 year life span, or major model range updates (which usually coincide with the same new edition cycle). Any smaller rules changes are easily locatable on the Warhammer Community website and update instantly on the 40K/Age of Sigmar app (they DO have a subscription fee, but you get BOTH for $5 a month with a Warhammer+ membership, which also comes with lots of other media and a free exclusive model that is worth the annual price by itself). 21:26 - Just want to mention here that occasionally due to using too much glue or the plastic becoming slightly warped somehow, two pieces might have a small gap where they should fit squarely (a rare occurrence, but it does happen). If you're just using the models for gaming, it's not a big deal, but you might want to fix it if you're making a display model. You can use a filler called 'liquid green stuff' to fill in the gap, sand down the edge flush, and when the paint goes on it'll be unnoticeable. 25:53 - Also...*_THIN YOUR CHAOS-DAMNED PAINTS!!!!!!!!_* kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2TTkImrha6GaMU 26:32 - Remember: put the matte varnish down first, then gloss over the stuff that you want to be shiny. Do it the other way and there's no shine.

The prices are certainly an issue. I mean this year I bought an RG Unicorn. It has color separation, clear pieces incredible articulation, high level of detail and it TRANSFORMS all for like $35. But five minis that can't move at all and have no color go for that price or higher? Painting isn't the issue, I myself detail my gunpla with paint brushes and will soon delve into fully painting them like that, since I have not yet made the leap into an airbrush. I'd be happy to paint the minis but wtf are Gamesworshop's prices??
@TheLichsLaboratory
@TheLichsLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That's something I tried to highlight and focus on in this video a lot since price points are the first thing people think of when they see Warhammer. I feel like secondhand minis are not only viable options for a lot of people, but sadly the only option for some of them since GW just wants to crank their prices up and up as time goes on. I'd like people to get into the hobby but a lot of people who show genuine eagerness are just priced out and that's depressing
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, getting minis direct from GW is a mistake, and should only be done if a model is exclusive to their webstore and you _really_ want the model. Second hand minis, purchases from resellers, 3D printing, or buying third party proxies is generally the way to go. For example, while that same $35 wouldn't get you even 10 Imperial Guardsmen from GW these days, sites like ebay are flush with used squads for around that price. And companies like Wargames Atlantic can get you 2x or 3x the model count per box for that $35. (And that's not even getting into bulk discounts, like WA does).

The most common advice is to get into warhammer through their respective skirmish games, kill team and warcry. But there’s actually a cheaper option in the Barnes and noble exclusive games they sell. They produce stripped down versions of those two skirmish games in Fire Team and Bladeborn. With fire team it comes with two teams and cards for other teams that would consist of one box factions that are also usuable in kill team. For bladeborn it’s even better as it uses warbands from their other skirmish game but card based in warhammer underworlds. The most well regarded and expandable game is blitz ball, a stripped down version of blood bowl, which is dropping a new version in October and has been making the rounds by some popular board game reviewers. These games are shorter, less fiddly and a great on-ramp for the hobby and aren’t spoken about often enough.

A major point that many newer fans (mostly those who came to the fandom via books, memes, and video games instead of through The Hobby) fail to grasp is the Warhammer settings aren't the same as the like of Star Wars or Marvel where canon is immutable. Warhammer is designed to be created in with huge chunks of the lore purposefully left blank for players to put their own stuff in.

I will also say that if theres anyone like me who dont do models but enjoys the lore and universe, Crusade and Other Stories is a great short story collection designed for newcomers to 40K thats pretty cheap and very solid. Theres also the Horus Heresy which is a 54 book and counting EPIC of a series that serves as a prequel to why the universe is so fucked in WH40k. that varies in pacing and quality but the first three and many more are genuinely fantastic as well. I dont know too much on Warhammer Fantasy books but I did read Age of Sigmar Thunderstrike which was pretty good. Its a damn shame we havent gotten a fully realized Warhammer movie yet with how much reading material there is. There was a direct to DVD CGI thing that came out a while back but its totally skippable. With the success of the fan project Astartes, which kicks ass btw, I hope we get some super sick Warhammer adaptations.

Tau battlesuits have a much more grounded and utilitarian design then Gundam mobile suits. While they still resemble Tau anatomy in their overall structure, they're more clearly mechanical in design, without much attempt to match the biological form. You can see this most clearly in the head, where the Gundam goes for something evocative of a samurai helmet, while a Crisis Battlesuit just has a boxy structure with some lenses and an antenna. It is where a head should be, anatomically speaking, but it looks nothing like one in isolation. Tau battlesuits are also not capable of movement as dexterous as that of mobile suits, which are almost capable of mimicking human motion. They have the ability to produce hand-like manipulators (they're usually retracted into the arm, but the commander kits give you the option to build them with them out), but they are only used when necessary. Their weapons, save for some very rare exceptions (looking at you, Farsight), are attached to hardpoints on the forearms rather than handheld. The bulk of their battlefield movement is also done with their jump packs, with walking being relegated to precise movement over short distances.

You can play a more affordable/free wargame using 3d printed/official/3rd party/recasts . It's called one page rules. Go look it up, there's even community made rules for Zeon and Federation.

What silver did you use for the armor of that sister?
@TheLichsLaboratory

It waa Citadel's Grey Knight Steel washed with Nuln Oil all over, then a damp brush removed the ink on the high spots. A recess shade would work too, I was just painting quickly

I've been a Gundam (Universal Century) fan for over 20 years now. I have work colleagues who want to get me into Warhammer/DnD, and I'm curious about it, but I just don't think it's for me and watching this video kind of isn't convincing me either (it's a good video though! Not saying that it isn't!!!) First, I build Gunpla for displaying purposes. I don't do dioramas or anything, but I am into custom painting, LED additions, and customization/kit-bashing. In no way do I build Gunpla as game pieces (as far as I know, it's not a thing for Gunpla anyway). Second, I get bored with board games. Yes, I know these games aren't like Monopoly or anything, but I guess I just need video games over board games. Third, I'm not into elves, orcs, etc. I've played some video games with them (Dragon's Dogma, for example), but I never truly get into that sort of thing. Same goes for magic, sorcery, and what-not. I'm into science fiction, but especially into realistic/possible science fiction, which is what I consider Gundam (Universal Century ONLY). It's sci-fi that COULD happen, but likely won't. Mechs and stuff, I'm also into. I'm fascinated in engineering and mechanics, so that's why. The guys I work with are telling me that they don't follow official rules strictly (play for fun), so they want me to use my Gunpla in the gameplay. That'd be cool and all, but I just can't make it work in my mind. Gundam is man+machine vs man+machine. Not man+machine vs elves, orcs, or wizards. Don't get me wrong... I appreciate these guys trying to include me though. Cool guys too. It's just not my thing.

I totally get you. It's nice to see that they want to do things with you but at the end of the day, if it ain't for you then it ain't for you. Personally I don't really get to play the actual game either, but I love the modeling aspect of both hobbies. That's a big strength of being a multifaceted hobby lol. Different strokes for different folks I'm glad this helped you out in some way at least!

Also, as more of a real mecha fan, you might also already be aware of the Battletech series but Battletech also has its own wargame. Boxes are cheap, like 30usd for everything you'd need and you usually only need one for small-mid sized games. From what I've heard it's pretty fun to boot, so maybe it could be a middle ground for you guys? 🤔
@SpexSpexington
@SpexSpexington 2 жыл бұрын
@The Lich's Laboratory The Battletech name is familiar for some reason, but I know nothing of it. Maybe one of my work colleagues mentioned it at some point? I dunno. I've never played role playing table top games (I guess you call them?) like DnD, Warhammer, Battletech, etc. I don't know why, but they've never interested me. But I'm interested with making new friends, as shy and introverted as I am. I'll look into Battletech. Maybe it's something you can actually blend Gundam into without breaking the lore or whatever.

@@SpexSpexington Battletech is a western military mecha franchise with a lot of combined arms warfare that's been around for close to 30 years now iirc. There are TTRPGs, wargames, and a bunch of other fiction around a really political plot. At the very least there's a Battletech 2018 game on Steam that might be a good way to dip your toes into the franchise. My dad and my friend are much more familiar with Battletech, I just played MechWarrior when it came out lol

I think there could be an interesting collaboration with Wargaming and Bandai. The giant Titans! How cool would it be to have a fully articulated Titan that's to scale as the regular game pieces in a match? It would be an interesting build too. Given the game scale, the largest would have to be Perfect Grade, but make sure there are interiors for a miniature crew. Other grade are possible too! The Tau mechs are pretty cool too and more inline with what Bandai already make, so that's might be an easier collaboration.

Bandai do have a warhammer space marine figure, I thinks it's price point is at $200+ it is premium bandai if I remember correctly. Even though I am kinda tempted to buy the warhammer kit, but the price is kinda pushing me back.. since $200 could get me atleast 3 or 4 RG kits here on my country.
