Good tip 👍 You can also store some shirt/blouse buttons inside plus a couple of small safety pins and a few dressmaker's pins. We use the smaller Gutermann spools to make up travel sewing kits and hand them out to friends. Never had one where the plug wouldn't pull out. If the paper seal on the other end to the pull out plug has been pierced you can block the hole to make sure the needles don't fall through. We use the end plug from a Bic Stick ball pen held in with a dab of Superglue.

It worked for me! I think it's easier on the large spools, you need to turn until you break those little joints (like you do when opening some soda bottles). great tip to keep thread and needle in your purse when emergency, thank you!

Pretty cool. It opened easily for some and others it just clicked when I tried to turn them

I couldn't pull it off the Gutermann recycled thread (maybe it's there but I didn't want to break it). It worked on the Gutermann all purpose thread, though!

All bets are off if you've put the spool on the spool pin of your machine and break the top seal. The needle falls right out onto the carpeting or to the bottom of your purse...

Here's a crazy idea 😲. . . why not block the hole with something! We use the little end plug from a Bic Stick ball pen held in with a dab of superglue. Makes for a great travel sewing kit.

By the way, if you turn the spool upside down and shake, the needle comes right back out with great ease. Don't try this if you're clumsy.

Well that's awesome, I had no idea that was there. Is that why this brand costs so much more than the others?

because cheap thread is made of short pieces heat welded or chemically welded together. They break more easily. More expensive thread is made of much longer pieces of cotton or silk or poly, far less likely to break and lasts forever

It is not a needle compartment unfortunately. It has no practical purpose for sewers, it is only used in the production process. This information is from a Guetermann customer service representative.

I thought that end was just to aecure the loose end of thread when storing rhe spool. I guess you xould store needles or small objects if you tape the hole shut. But just another place to forget where you put them!

Hi, I have an empty spool of the same brand. Which way did you twist the bottom off? One side is too tight to twist. The other just keeps spinning. Thanks!

"Made To Sew" Beginner's Course. Day 1. She tells you how the thread should come under the spool as it spins (on the horizontal spool pin). She also advises about the vertical pin too. I like 'Easy sewing for beginners' too, but Made To Sew's clips are longer, more thorough. She really does think of everything and it's easily the best guide on youtube.
