Invisible Thread Tips

My first time coming across your channel as I was looking for info about using invisible thread. I had quite the smile about your name though. When I was little my father called me “Motormouth”. He was a mechanic, so of course. Lol. When I was nine, I got a night gown that read “Chatterbox” from the left shoulder down to the hem. My dad picked it out for me. 😂 Thanks for the info on the thread and for invoking some special memories.

Sometimes I am too chatty. My dad, with 3 daughters, nicely/kiddingly would say he could not get a word in edgewise 😊. Fast forward to adulthood, sometimes I talk too much, and some make it known that they just wanted a succinct answer. So when Tracy of The Sewing Channel ends the project's introduction with, "Enough talking already, let's get started", I feel, for a few seconds, like I am being reprimanded before I realize that is a silly thought.

I have a Pfaff 720 and use Monopoly thread in the bobbin without a problem. The winding of the bobbin is done on a slow speed and I only fill it 3/4 full

Great tips! I used invisible thread on a panel quilt because i didnt want obvious lines running through it. The hard part was seeing where i quilted! Old eyes! Lol!

Thank you Kim for this video on the invisible thread. The only kind of invisible I have ever used were the wiry hard kind and although it worked, I wasn't impressed with all the headaches that came along with it. I had no idea about not using it in my clear bobbins and that may explain some of the troubles I had. Now that you made me aware of the poly thread I will be usng it as my true love is applique. Thanks again Kim. Love watching as I always seem to learn something new.

Thank you for sharing knowledge. I've used this thread on the top and the bobbin. It works out wonderfully. I will add I wind the bobbin slowly and never fill it (the bobbin)completely. An Old Girl in KZN SOUTH AFRICA 🇿🇦

I use invisible thread if I sew my bindings down by machine. I have used the invisible thread in the bobbin many times with much success. I didn't know that it could distort the plastic bobbin. (I have a Viking machine). I have also used invisible thread in the top and bottom simultaneously, but not often. I do usually use a 3.0 stitch length, though. Interesting video. Thanks!

Thanks for the great video. I use invisible thread - both the clear and smoke - to do pretty much all my quilting and applique. It's just so handy and it hides a world of mistakes. I don't think I'll ever be good enough as a free motion quilter to want to use thread that stands out. For me just the texture of the quilting is what I want.

My M7 sews great with invisible thread. I have used it in the top and bobbin. To make it easier to find I put a wonder clip on the ends when I cut the threads Thank you for all the videos.

I have used invisible thread in the bobbin but I wind it on by hand. This works great for machine stitching labels on!

I wind my bobbin on the sewing machine very very slowly and only wind it half full. I don't have issues in my Kenmore 385 (made by Janome) or my Babylock Jazz 2. I use invisible thread in the bobbin when binding a quilt and on the top when sewing around applique.

Thanks for the great explanation. I am however terribly tension-challenged 😢. I have a Janome Continental M7 and am very pleased with the Auto-tension 😅. So if I have to adjust the tension while using invisible thread, what do I adjust it to? I hope you find time to help me here … Thanks so much.

I tend to loosen the top tension just a bit for invisible thread but you might not need to. First try stitching and see if the tension is okay. If it is, you don't need to do anything but if you find that the bobbin thread is pulling to the top, reduce the top tension a bit. Try again and adjust as needed. Don't be afraid to adjust tension - just do it a bit at a time until you get that sweet spot! 😉

Thanks for this. Have you ever used silk thread? I have 2 spools of 100wt silk thread that I got as a gift. Not sure how/when to use for a quilt.

No, I haven't, although I do have some in my thread stash. I do know that some longarmers use it on their quilts so it can be used for quilting.

Great video thank you for posting! I need to sew a clear vinyl/pvc label onto a swimsuit. I planned to hand sew with needle and mono poly thread. Do you have any helpful tips?!

I haven't sewn with vinyl by hand or machine so don't really have any suggestions. One thing that you might find helpful to pull your needle through the vinyl is needle pullers. You can get different types of these and they help to grip and pull the needle from the top once you've pushed the needle through the vinyl.

These are the Martelli Palm Quilting Paddle Set. I use the Janome purple tip needles for quilting. You could use a topstitch needle as well.

Do you mean "sashiko"? Yes, you could use it for that. Check your manual for how to do a sashiko stitch with the Janome M7.

I'm really into making rope bowls & don't care for the visible zigzag. I used Coats & Clark invisible thread & had good luck in the beginning but then the bobbin kept jamming when I used different ropes. I have a plastic bobbin & didn't know it could warp. I saw it was very thin & as you stated the bobbin likes 60 (or 80) wt. My manual says to use 60 wt. I really like the Gutterman Cotton thread & verigated & it says they are 50 wt. Do you think your suggested brand would be better? Have you used transparent thread on a clothesline cord bowl? Thanks...😊

I haven't used invisible thread to make these bowls - I prefer to use a polyester thread whose colour closely matches the rope colour. I haven't used other brands except for Superior Threads' MonoPoly and haven't had any issues with it when using it for free motion quilting but can't comment as to using it when it comes to rope bowls.

I use Superior Threads MonoPoly which is polyester and not nylon - so not like fishing line at all. I like to use a Top Stitch needle.

@@Chatterboxquilts I decided to order the superior threads mono Poly and it definitely feels softer and then I ordered the superior threads titanium top stitch needles size 80/12 even though on the back of the package they recommended 70/10 topstitch My Juki takes 75/11 but I ended up using the 80/12, I was going through two layers of Quilting cotton and two layers of cotton batting

Ok my question as I am just learning about this thread. Do you use prefilled bobbins with the monopoly? You mention to not use it on your bobbin? But when I went in to Amazon, I Noticed they have. And were advertising to buy along with the thread. Are you against using prefilled? I have been using them with regular threads.

I meant to not use the MonoPoly in the bobbin. You can use prefilled polyester bobbins with the MonoPoly - I suggest a 60 wt. or lighter.

In the video I suggested that you use a 60 or 80 wt. polyester thread in the bobbin. I don't recommend that you use invisible thread in the bobbin.
