I saw Haunting in Venice last night and loved it. This is Branagh’s best Poirot film yet…though I agree that he was wrong for the role. I’m just used to him now I guess. I read the book Hallowe’en Party decades ago and didn’t remember much about it. The change of location to Venice was smart and allowed for a spooky atmosphere. Honestly, Agatha Christie mysteries usually take place in a remote location where a storm is happening or something that traps everyone in a mansion until the killer is revealed…so it was easy to transplant this story to Venice. You have to enjoy an old fashioned mystery story like this to enjoy these movies. You have to be the kind of person who likes murder mystery dinners and escape rooms. Of course Michelle Yeoh was fabulous…but I was surprised that I enjoyed Tina Fey. I think this is the first time she tried being an actress and playing a character instead of just being a version of Tina Fey. Her character Ariadne Oliver was actually written by Agatha Christie as a spoof of herself. I enjoyed all the vintage Halloween and other spooky visuals and jump scares. This is a movie that I could watch again around Halloween every other year and enjoy.

Thank you, Kevin. All throughout this review, I was wracking my brain to remember the name of that film (with Emma Thompson before they were married, and later divorced), but until you left this comment, I was stumped. Great film! Also, Joseph and Nick: as always. I love your reviews and personal perspectives on these films. Your due diligence allows me to pick and choose good cinema options rather than waste my time and money. I live in a very rural area in County Cavan, so a night out at the pictures costs significantly more when taking transport (bus and train) to the nearest cinema. You two are the best! Keep 'em coming. I would rather watch your reviews than go to town any day. Lots of love from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤

Nick and Joseph are hands down the most entertaining film reviewers on KZbin. As was clearly evident in the review of the Venice Film Festival, Nick has amazing endurance ( 53 films watched!) and his grasp of film film history is astonishing. Keep up the excellent work!

I didn't like Cloris Leachman in the last picture show I kinda always thought that she was miscast in that film and I totally agree with Joseph's comment that she appeared old even when she young 😆 Lol I think it's funny when I see some babies that look like elderly people it makes me laugh some babies just have that look

I opine that "I liked it," but now I feel like Lina Lamont saying the same thing after the disastrous preview of "The Dueling Cavalier" in "Singin' in the Rain." I guess if this "Haunting" pretty much sucked I missed it.

For me, better than Orient but not Nile. Biggest issue: Info that WE weren’t privy to which would have allowed us a chance to solve along w/ Poirot. He saw an important footprint…WE didn’t. He was right about blackmail as a motive for the Dr’s death…WE had no info about any scheme like that, outside of the guilty party’s mention of lack of funds to fix the grand house, but it was after WW2 when resources and finances were tight. Also, the most thrilling reveal was over a typewriter…not the daughter’s or Dr’s deaths. But still, I felt engaged more often than not. Way more fun than Sir Kenneth’s adaptation of Orient.

It's so funny that you didn't like Tina Fey because I thought she was what made the movie work as well as it does. Like you I don't think this movie is necessarily good but it's definitely better than those previous adaptations he made and for me I thought she balances the tone from his typical overwrought tone. Like she adds some freshness.

I think this movie's title was chosen to capitalize on the conjuring franchise by using the same template as A Haunting in Connecticut. And tbh it kind of can fit inside of the Conjuring universe if they really wanted to. But then they will have to not show any fictional works of Hercule Poirot by Agatha Chistie

Disagree. I enjoyed this movie. It's an old-fashioned over the top film shot in a modern style. Anybody that digs '4'0's noir should also enjoy. I like Branagh's take on this detective.

I saw this at the movies today (free ticket). I love Christie's mysteries, so no matter how bad (or good) I want to check out the films for myself. I read Halloween Party when I was a teen, but it wasn't one of her masterpieces. However, I am a big fan of the David Suchet series & I recommend his version of Halloween Party which was truer to the original plot (not 100%). I actually found it better than the book. BTW, I agree with the 2 stars; it suffered from a convoluted plot, but it was stylish. I visited Venice several years ago and it's always a pleasure to see this city depicted in films. With the great atmosphere & history of Venice, this film could have been so much better. Thanks for the review, guys

The tiny problem I had with this film is the torn photograph of the young couple looks too modern in the quality of the photo. I know in 1947 they had color photo technology but to my knowledge I think it was kind of washed out and colored in by hand and not as clear and accurate looking tint and hue or natural looking skin tones etc

Somehow, the 'British set ' were seemingly the better producers of *whodunits*- so, only having watched a few samplings before...Nick at a point 'thinking it "funny"...yep! So, your views on why this was what it was, the plot, seems below par - Joseph had to ask *if* there were Supernatural elements...oh why 😉
