The novelization of Revenge of the Sith was written by Matthew Stover. His writing style is a little jarring at first, but I believe he wrote the best interpretation of a Star Wars film there is. He takes the movie script and adds an incredible amount of depth to the story. If you can get a copy, it's well worth the read.

Dave Filoni once did a live interview with the other voice actors of Rebels, and he explains how the dark side is a trap. Where he says that if you are so afraid, you no longer trust others or understand them, and that's all the dark side. And the power the dark side offers are just Palpatine's lies. Because Darth Vader was miserable. He had *nothing.* He's a cool villain, but he is someone that is trapped in eternal suffering, no longer ever able to find happiness or joy in his life. He has no future where he can smile ever again. That is the tragedy of Anaki Skywalker. A man who lost *everything* that ever mattered and was left with nothing, and now just exists without purpose.
@jeffreymeehan31162 жыл бұрын
This is demonstrated almost directly in the comics. Vader needs a new lightsaber so he tracks down Kirak Infala, a Jedi Master who is on a kind of Pilgrimage to better connect with the Force. He kicks Vader's ass, but doesn't confirm the kill. So Vader comes back and breaks a dam, flooding a village while Infala is forced to watch. Vader tries to Bleed Infala's kyber crystal but the crystal gives him visions of what would happen if he turned back to the Light. He would take the Lightsaber and cut down the Emperor, then he would find Kenobi and apologize...and that's it. He would be stuck in his suit with his artificial limbs and everyone else he cared about would be dead. So he stays with the Sith because that is easier.

I will say nothing more but to show things that open each section within the novel(3 parts for each major section and then the finale) "The dark is generous. Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others. The dark protects us from what we dare not know. Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary. Day is the illusion. Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self. With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins. The dark is generous, and it is patient. It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt. The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout. The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light. The dark’s patience is infinite. Eventually, even stars burn out. The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins. It always wins because it is everywhere. It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet. The brightest light casts the darkest shadow. The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back. Love is more than a candle. Love can ignite the stars." Matthew Stover Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith novelization

The reason this is so sad is because deep down you knew was a good person but just had flaws to him that Palpatine manipulated. What makes it worse is that everybody involved deserve some blame. Obviously Palpatine deserves most of the blame as well as Anakin for allowing himself to be manipulated and chosing the dark side. But the counsel deserve blame for their willingness to participate in the war as much as they did even engaging in hypocrisy in order to try to end the war. Both Padma and Ashoka were emotionally compromised so neither one pay attention to the signs that Anakin might be heading down the wrong path. Obi won being the master should of be able to sense the darkness growing in Anakin but because he was so caught up in the war himself, not to mention his own personal issues he had with his gf dying so he didn't see the signs either. It just a sad story.

It's because before he turned into Vader, Anakin always respected Palatine. Palatine was in a high position and always was gracious towards Anakin, something no one gave him. They couldn't bc they didn't have the power and position. After Anakin turned into Vader, he would bow, Everytime, bc Vader and Palatine knew, Vader, more machine then man, would never be as powerful as Anakin. More ruthless sure. But just a pitbull off the leash anytime Palatine commanded and could put him down at anytime. And Vader knew this. Very, very tragic. The story of Anakin Skywalker is a story all should know. El Father it’s in the revenge of the sith novel where Yoda says that the force is strong with her. All of the movie-based novelizations give you much more character insight, I love them. I started with the original trilogy novels and i started reading the prequel novels after the movies came out. I still have yet to read the sequel novels but I'll get to them eventually. But the characterizations, when the writer is really good, you CANT. PUT. THE BOOK. DOWN! Much as I love the movies, I love it when writers describe whats on the screen, in such a visually poetic way that you remember the exact same shots and images from the film as if you watched it yesterday, even though its been years or months since you've even seen the movies. A few of my favorite novelists of the SW universe are Timothy Zahn (who created Thrawn), Aaron Allston (he writes such great and fun dialogue scenes and situations, especially in some of the X-Wing novels) and of course the one who started it all, Alan Dean Foster with A New Hope's novelization back in 1976: the book was released before the movie came out, and it sports the writer as "George Lucas". Wasnt until years later, I found out that Foster didnt want his name on the project if the movie flopped, but since it became successful, he's now one of the most popular Star Wars authors ever to put pen to paper!

After the moment Anakin thought he killed Padme and realised that it was all his fault, and realising that everyone he hurt and killed was for absolutely nothing, the Dark Side was his only “home” he could come to. It was the the only thing that gave him purpose and the one thing that kept him there from when he first became Vader, up to Rogue One and after was his hatred, and the one thing he hated more than anything in the entire galaxy including, Sidious, Obi-Wan, the Jedi Order, Ahsoka during Rebels and everything and everyone that caused him any sort pain and suffering, intentional or unintentional. He hated himself most of all, because he knew it was all his fault and that it’s far too late to redeem himself.

Oh boy, that video was absolutely amazing. The idea of "Anakin is Vader" is definitly an interesting one, although as we've already seen in Rebels at some point Vader stops believing in it. At some point he seperates Vader and Anakin, as Anakin was too weak in his eyes, not worthy of being this powerful Sith-Lord's past. If you wanna know more about why he did that, I recommend the 2017 Darth Vader comic by Marvel. It sets off immediatly after Vader arises from the operation table in Episode 3 and covers round about his first year of being Vader. You'll revisit a few characters (a couple clones even), find out a bit more backstory on some (for instance the Inquisitors) and you will see how Vader turned from the fallen Jedi knight to the dark lord of the Sith. It's a really interesting comic run.

Dude what? Vader IS Anakin. He isn't Two Face. Why are you acting like that's some kind of hot take? He became evil. He wasn't possessed or had some kind of personality split. Just because he rejects who he once was doesn't change anything.

@monkeynt57804 жыл бұрын
Tobito TV Every single time I hear people talk about this they always say he "died" at a different point in time. That is not canon at all, and why would they be two different people? That would COMPLETELY make his entire character arc as Vader MEANINGLESS. If they're two different people, why even have him turn evil at all? The emperor considers Anakin a different person just so Vader rejects his past even more. And the heartbeat thing is just symbolism. He didn't actually just die and wake up as a different person within two seconds.
@SWTobito07024 жыл бұрын
@@monkeynt5780 Yeah, thanks Sherlock. Cause symbolism is apparently meaningless now? Anakin symbolically died when the mask was put on him the first time and he was reborn as Vader. Of course he didn't have like a ministroke or something like that mid scene, how did you even get that from my comment? The two are mentally not the same. Because Anakin represents the good in him, while Vader represents the bad. They are still physically the same person, however there is somewhat of a mental disconnect from Vader's side. He quite literally said "Anakin Skywalker was weak. I destroyed him." on multiple occasions throughout canon.

Anakin was different among the Sith, just as he was different among the Jedi. Most Sith give up who they were when they embrace the Darth title. Sidious gave up his old life, Palpatine was a mask he wore. When someone chooses the Sith order they are reborn into a state where they exist only to continue the line of Sith Lords. Anakin did not do that. He couldn't let go of Anakin. Vader was a mask, it allowed him to commit his crimes and take solace in the fact that it was Vader that was doing them. He hid behind Vader.

I also recommend you read the novel The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader by Ryder Windham after you finish the original trilogy. It's a retelling of the prequels and originals all from the first person perspective of Anakin/Vader. You get to see his innner thoughts on events and how his mind worked. It's technically not canon anymore but considering how it's a deep dive into Anakin's inner phyche I think it still works, maybe just replace certain things that are mentioned with the canon version (replace his private residence called Bast Castle in the book with his castle on Mustafar in Rogue One). The book was also written in 2008 so right around the same time as the Clone Wars movie/show was getting started, so the book doesn't mention Ashoka at all because her character wasn't really around yet.

Sidious made things worse through his manipulation and stroking of Anakin’s ego but at the end of the day Anakin was still an angry, ruthless, ambitious, vengeful man. Do not argue with me about him being power hungry either, at the age of nineteen his explicit desire was to become the most powerful being to ever exist so that he could control life and death themselves. "I won't lose you the way I lost my mother" Anakin unfortunately has a selfish point of view of his relationships, he doesn't want to lose what he has. And that is because of his childhood of being a slave and he didn't have much so when something is slipping away from him he has to stop it, he can't accept death, at least not this early, as Yoda instructs him. As it says in the video, he did it for him, not for Padme. When she died he realized that, and he hated himself for what he had done, all for nothing.

The way I see it, there was indeed some amount of selfishness to Anakin and his relationships (which is perfectly normal) but he's shown time and time again in TCW his selflessness and ability to self sacrifice. He truly loved and cared about Padme and would give up his life in a heartbeat if it meant saving her. Unfortunately the dark side corrupts, and it twisted his motivations, making him lose sight why he turned to it in the first place

It's interesting when George Lucas talks about Anakin as a character, he's flawed. He's controlling, impulsive, he has this need to control things, and that was the one thing that he needed to let go of. If he had let go of his need for control, he wouldn't have helped the Emperor, he wouldn't have killed Mace Windu, he wouldn't have slaughtered the Jedi who were essentially his family. And that's the whole point of the Sith: More control, more power, more want of things that are ultimately temporary, more greed. And the whole point of being an apprentice to a Sith Lord, is to get all the power of the one above you. It's why they made what's called the Rule of Two: One to gain the power, the other to crave it. The Sith at one time numbered in thousands with their numbers actually rivaling that of the Jedi. They had such a lust for power, they began fighting amongst themselves. They were the own cause of their Order's extinction. Anakin already had sort of the beginnings of that kind of greed: his love for his mother, his love for Padme, his wanting to become a more powerful Jedi, etc, and Palpatine pulled every single string available until his influence became so toxic, that Anakin couldnt tell whether it was his own darkness, or Palpatine's influence over the years. Palpatine's the ultimate toxic friend/gaslighter, it's why he works so well as a villain. And its part of why Anakin's story is such a tragedy. And yet, as our Xelle will soon see, Anakin Skywalker's story, is not yet over...there is still a certain prophecy that needs to be fulfilled. Enjoy the Original Trilogy, milady. Oh, and you might want to bring a tissue box. There's gonna be tears of both sadness and joy.

I must disagree with the original video title...Vader, he was a man with fear, a very dangerous man by the way. He was always Vader. Anaking was just the shell. And the Emperor used his fear as a tool to cut through this shell and expose Vader. A selfish, arrogant, and extremely careless boy. He just wanted to have the power and skills to save the ones he loved. He became a Jedi just for his personal sefish purpose, to save his mother from slavery (wich he fails by the way), and then he wanted more power to save the woman he loved the most, almost in a toxic way, I could say (and he also failed). You see...the easiest path can only lead to failure and pain. However, the prophecy was true in deed. Vader brought balance to the force...there was way to much light, to many jedis, and all light needs an equal amount of darkness to be at balance. So Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon misunderstood the prophecy. Anakin was not meant to bring more power to the light side of the force. The balance was to bring darkness to diminish the exessive power that the jedis already had. So Obi-Wan's line: "You were the choosen one, you were supposed to bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness"...proves how blind and confused he was about the real deal of the prophecy.
