I've got one (560SL) and the timing chain and guides are of special concern. Also, the plastic oiling tubes above the intake/exhaust cams. Replace the valve seals and the emissions improve dramatically.

Just age alone will give you things to replace. My 86 each year I spend money little by little fixing and or replacing. I had a low milage car yet due to age still needed replacing.

3 or 4 hours to replace the subframe bushes and the engine mounts? Hour and a half max.

Its i bit of a job with the sl, especially to reach them and replace with engine mounted.

I wonder what the SL Shop proposed on that little "bit of adjustment" to the steering. How many hours would that take? Cheers, K.

I had that problem and it was a worn "steering coupling." Open the hood and have someone move the steering wheel while you observe the coupling located in front of the steering box. To replace it you have to loosen the steering box (3 bolts inside the wheel well on the steering side) and break a ball joint under the car. It's not that hard of a job.. takes maybe an hour but you'll need a lift or some high jack stands. You can buy the part on ebay. PS. There is also a steering box adjustment you can make to take slop out IF that is where the problem is.. but be very careful on that adjustment because if you adjust too far you ruin the steering box and there is no way of knowing what is too far until you ruin it. 1/8th of a turn on the adjusting screw is all I recommend then cross your finger..

I had play in the steering when I bought my 85 380 SL and I adjusted the steering box myself. Made a little adjustment and then test drove it and repeated until it was good. You will need a 19mm crows foot wrench and patience

Sound very expensive to me why does he need so many days to get an email to give him a price the expectation wait time would kill me alone that place scares me sounds very expensive and the guys expression behind a desk looks like he wants to charge him a lot of money his face is just too serious

Nervous (the shop guy's face is flush) and culture (more formal in the UK). Thorough snapshot of the car's "health" is best with a luxury investment, it's not some mere oil change or short term service.

I did. Bought my '85 380 SL knowing only that it had prior fuel injection work done. I cleaned the vehicle thoroughly inside/out first to see everything and then changed all of the fluids except the rear end which I will do. Changed the belts, filters, wiper blades, spark plugs, cap/rotor, fuel accumulater, front sway bar bushings & exhaust donuts. I have some videos posted

I did, I picked up an 85 380sl for 3k, with 0 repair history & the father--in-law barely drove it due to fuel issues, but 3k for a 0 rust Florida car, I couldn't pass up especially with only 48k miles
