From Massachusetts. Please don’t spend all your time in Boston. If you haven’t seen it yet Concord is a must, go check out North Bridge and other historical sites, grab a burger at Colonial Inn and just enjoy the town. I live here and it’s still a day vaca for me. You can always slide over and see Lexington Battle Green though I never find myself wanting to leave Concord. Doesn’t take much to see what those boys were fighting for.

I like Extra History, OSP and other American history KZbin channels in general. The problem I have is they often try to spin this moral narrative behind historical events, with who we should root for and when the mood should be somber because we're discussing slavery. As a European who's lived in the US, I find this is a very American, moralistic way to look at history that is perhaps not the best suited to understand actions and events, but that mindset is being imported in my country in public discourse and I don't like it. A historian's role is never to judge, never to be outraged, but always to try and understand, even those we think are the most horrendous, because understanding is not forgiving or condoning. You can't be a political activist and a historian at the same time; or rather, you have to disconnect the two ways of thinking.

I’ve seen you reference Hamilton a couple times on other videos but I also really recommend the musical 1776. It even has a movie version. Very different songs but I absolutely love the scenes where they show some of the debates, including the moment where they decide that independence must be unanimous, and how they address the condemnation of slavery being removed from the declaration. I know it’s not extremely historically accurate (for one they show the declaration being signed by everyone on July 4 but that’s mostly for a dramatic ending), but the way they portray the more loyalist members of Congress like Dickenson as well as other people who weren’t in favor of independence at first is amazing. Plus the song “Molasses to Rum to Slaves” is a great “villain” song (really just that one and Dickenson’s are the closest to villain songs since they’re portrayed more as antagonists than evil villains thankfully.) Also they do make a recurring joke about New York constantly abstaining.

The Articles of Confederation need to get emphasized more, in high school American History, given that so few people take college level courses in the subject. A frank look at the dysfunctional consequences of the Articles, and the fact the country nearly collapsed because of them, would explain why the Constitution's strong central government is so absolutely necessary. Generally speaking, the Articles relied on the willingness of people to behave rationally and ethically, without need for external enforcement. As we see, today, willingness to behave ethically towards others (or even treat them with simple courtesy) and behave rationally are unrealistic expectations all too frequently. The Constitution was an artifact of Enlightenment-era thinking, but even fewer people back then qualified as "enlightened rationalists," as compared to today -- and *we* have precious few of them.

Dickinson was not the only 'no' vote on the first call. The other delegate from Penn abstained along with Dickinson for the second vote which ended in a 3-2 majority for independence. Delaware's delegation was tied until Caesar Rodney famously rode to Philadelphia to cast the deciding vote to break the deadlock. The point still stands though as he was likely the most influential of the 'not ready for independence' camp in the Congress. As you mention, once the vote was decided he resigned from Congress to join the Pennsylvania state militia. A side tangent is that John Dickinson was the only founding father during the Independence years to free all of his slaves. Ben Franklin had done so previously in 1770. A man of principle indeed.

Franklin was a loyalist to the crown, or at the very least a moderate who thought that the conflict could have been healed before the war started. He met with the Lords in Parliament during negotiations and the Lords there was so condescending to him, a Loyalist Sympathizer, that they turned Franklin against the Loyalist cause. It's said he went in a Loyalist but left a Patriot.

Wrote a paper for US History class connecting the start of Freemasonry in the Colonies with the spread of ‘radical’ ideas that led to the American Revolution. Freemasons also helped forge the connection between the seperate Colonies. As we know nowadays, anger at taxation is just not enough to form the connection we see. The wealthy Colonists would lose more money by separating from the crown and it was a mystery whether they could successfully form a new Country. There needed to be something more that pushed colonists to revolt. That’s my opinion anyways.
