A historic but dangerous elevator.

(11-13-2015) This is an amazing elevator however it is being removed. It may already have been updated. Please do not name the location if you know where it is. In this video we will get a fairly detailed look at it. PLEASE NOTE! This elevator is in a private building and the elevator is NOT open to the public. I had special permission to shoot this video as this was taken during the modernization.

Actually though I disagree. This elevator is only "dangerous" because of some safety components such as the inside door and interlocks being absent but that's only because they intentionally removed it to get ready to modernize this elevator. Originally this elevator had all those safety features in place and ran better than many modern ones

DieselDucy As stupid as this sounds, it might be a good idea to also post that description in the comment section. If people are lazy to read the description, they would be able to see the request before commenting. Another thing you can do is put an annotation somewhere with that request. The unfortunate reality is that some people on the autism spectrum won't exactly know what or why you request even if they do read it briefly. For many autistic people, it's just extremely tempting to want to name the location and they have a hard time understanding why a building owner wouldn't want their location being known

It seems that the Vintage Elevator is in modernization, since the Outer Door Mechanism of every floor is new & the main call station (0:05) have a floor indicator reserved for the second elevator.

I think I know where this one is, but dont worry i won't say. ;) AMAZING Elevator, but sucks they removed the gate and it isn't that safe anymore. I know you said it probably was being modded/replaced, but if there is any chance at all that this one is still here (as Suggested by Elevating Western PA's comments about TJ filming here more recently) hopefully they can just put new doors in but otherwise keep it as is.

Do the Landing doors have electrical contacts . How can someone keep that basement door open exposing the lift shaft. If they do have an electrical contract, someone has shorted them out in the controller, which is probably an old slat back board type with exposed carbon contacts. I would have thought Safety regulations in the states where very stringent.

No inner gate- you can get your leg stuck in the shaft No door at basement- someone can get crushed if the elevator is going down to basement, and someone can fall in the pit No interlocks- Someone can open the door and jump down the shaft Also, is this in the United States or is it in a different country?

It was because they intentionally removed some of the safety components for modernization. Has nothing to do with neglect. Modernization actually wasn't necessary before they did that. I saw this elevator in the condition it was in before this video years ago and it ran way better than most modern elevators

Beno would probably love to ride this one but this elevator is severly compromised in it’s safety cirtcuit. I’ll bet it’s not beeing inspected for a long time. I would assume the owner is doing something against the code. I can’t believe that the local authorities would allow it to be in use in this condition. A building inspector or fire safety inspector better not see it....... makes one wonder if the building is safe in event of a fire.

Also exposed wiring hanging outside of junction boxes(covers missing) on the underside of the cab, possibly frayed wiring as well. These conductors are for the traveling cables up and down direction and interior lighting. Noticed other electrical hazards pertaining to the sump pump.

Wow that's incredibly dangerous. The owners need to either properly repair and upgrade that elevator or remove it. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days someone dies in it because of the owners trying to take the easy way out and remove the door and the call system. I hope someone sensible reports it to the codes enforcement so nobody gets hurt.

DieselDucy you should check out the safety systems in the doors on every floor especially the basement to see if the locks are able to keep people from opening it without the shaft access key, I bet they don't work right 🤔😁.

DieselDucy oh ok yeah I just read your video description. Did you do this video in 2015 if so then they probably did remove it and I hope so. You should go back again one day and see if they replaced it. Also I don't know if you saw my comment on your live stream awhile ago but my comment was about my city has a bunch of old Otis elevators especially one in our Amtrak station here, but you would have to get permission to record cause our businesses don't like video recording.

Jonathan The Railfan Not only does it need an inner door for this elevator, it also needs a new safety mechanism. Anyone can injure themselves if they happen to open the hoistway doors while the elevator is moving.

No, human-beings who ride it don't take responsibility and conduct themselves safely. They want the dang elevator to do all their being safe for them. Funny how they want musicians to be playing music and singers to not need auto-tune but they want the elevator to "auto-tune" their safety.

That elevator is only as unsafe as it's riders. While an elevator in such a state would not be allowed to be in service, it's not unsafe in the way of a cable breaking and it dropping or it starting up on it's own with a door open. Elevators without inner and outer doors did exist and it was up to the people to practice being safe. Nowadays we expect the elevator to do all our being safe for us. The funny thing about this, is how people complain about music being played by machines, A.I. and singers using auto-tune to sing on key vs practicing and developing their own talent but they want machines to do all the being safe for them vs they conducting themselves safely. Such is why the Paternoster gets such an undeserved bad rap and is not allowed in the USA.
