By far this is definitely one of the most unique elevator experiences you could ever ask for! I never thought there would be a freight elevator built into a tunnel that was designed for vehicles to travel on. Used to live in Norfolk. Really cool bridges and tunnels. Don’t miss the traffic though, lol. One time it took us almost 2 hours to get over the HRBT (3.5 miles)! Wish I could have gotten a behind the scenes tour, as I think elevators are really cool, and I love infrastructure!

What a lucky find. Lots of cool specs and features on this one. By the 1990's, GAL must have been the last one still building old style open frame controllers.

@@DieselDucy Some consultants continued to specify relay for utilitarian applications like this. My understanding is that the actual end of them was the adoption of the 2000 code. I'm amazed that GAL was still winning bids with their open "slateboard" design. Seems like a lot of material compared to a relatively small cabinet full of ice cubes which was what everyone else would have built at the time.
