This is so interesting to me. My great-grandparents all came to the USA from Italy. But multiple DNA tests have shown that my distant ancestry contains Persian, a lot of it. This I never knew until I had the DNA test. To me, that is about the coolest thing ever , and I want to learn all I can about Iranian and Persian history.

I'm kurdish and I consider that we belong to the iranian nation. We are ethnically siblings to persians. This does not mean we haven't developed our own characteristic language and culture, exactly as danish have their own characteristic in relation to swedes. We are from the same geographical area and our languages are very similar. My DNA test showed 100 % Iran, whatever it is worth. Thank you for a great vid.

Very informative! This was a very beautifully articulated exposition of a blending of archeology, history, and population genetics that contribute to the construction of Iranian culture. Though brief, he has shown some basics of the pre-history going to the early history of Iran in a meaningful way. I would love to hear him expand further on many of these topics, particularly where genetics can lend insight where history and archeology cannot. For example the connection between these early Zagros farmers and their links to Caucasian Hunter-Gatherers, Basal Eurasians, and possibly to other Ancient North Eurasian groups other than the Indo-European Aryans. But from this video what I can say is that would appreciate more content from this youtuber. Hopefully more videos are to come.

I encourage you to take a look at the Greco-bactrians and Indo-greeks,and the artistry of Gandhara,the most striking being the rendering of the Buddha in Hellenic style. I'm of Polish heritage and slowly pieced together my connection to the Afghans(formally called Ariana) and Iranians via the Sarmations,an 'Iranic' people. We Iranian people are not European, however both Europeans and Iranians are descended from a single common ancestor known as the Indo-Iranian Peoples. The Indo-Iranian People developed on the Central Asian Steppes north of the Caspian Sea (their culture is referred to as the Sintashta Culture) in southern Russia, or present-day Georgia (which included Volga and Ossetia) around 2200 to 1800 BCE, and later developed further into the "Andronovo Culture" circa 2000 to 900 BCE. Legend has it that this group of people had a major argument amongst each other, resulting in various groups migrating in different directions from another. One segment of Iranians (Fars, Pars, or Medes) moved south and created the Persian Empire. The other segment known as Iranian Alans, migrated to Europe from Italy to Ireland to Scandinavia. One segment of Volga-Germans migrated to Europe and mixed in with the German-Vandals (from Scandinavia) and created today’s Germany. The other segment remained and mixed in with the Rus that migrated from Europe and formed today’s Russia. The Indo-Aryans split off around 2000 BCE to 1600 BCE from the Iranians, whereafter the Indo-Aryans migrated into Anatolia and, possibly in multiple waves, the Punjab (northern Pakistan and India), while the Iranians settled into Iran, both bringing with them the Indo-Iranian languages. All of these groups, who would end up settling in an extremely vast area of land stretching from the Indian Subcontinent, all the way to the northernmost parts of Europe, and everything in between, are what many scholars commonly refer to as the "Aryan" people. All these people are related, albeit distantly. The Aryans in Iran would intermingle with and eventually absorb the Elamites, and the Aryans in India would eventually converge with the Dravidians (creating the caste system in India which still exists even to this day, although unofficially). It is believed that both the Elamites and Dravidians were indigenous South Asian hunter-gatherers distantly related to the Andamanese people, hence their dark skin and other unique physical characteristics. Knowing this deep-rooted history, Adolf Hitler attempted to exploit this ancient Aryan connection to get Iran to join their side before WWII officially began. Reza Shah, father of the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, liked this idea, and even went so far as to change the name of the country from Persia to Iran (the latter meaning "Land of the Aryans") in 1935. However, Reza Shah's goal of uniting with Germany infuriated the Allied Powers, who would eventually invade Iran in 1941, forcing Reza Shah to abdicate in favor of his son (known as the Anglo-Soviet Invasion of Iran). If someone asks whether Iranians and Europeans are related, the answer is yes AND no. Yes, in the sense that they both descend from a common ancient bronze age culture from the steppes, but no in the sense that both groups have been isolated from each other long enough that they have formed their own unique racial classifications. For example, Native Americans originated in Siberia, making them of Near Eastern Descent, which is evidenced by their physical characteristics. Furthermore, words in Yakut and other Siberian languages, along with words in some Native American languages, share the same root and meaning to this day due to this common origin. However, because Native Americans became isolated in North and South America after crossing over from the Bering Strait land bridge during the last ice age, they technically separated, genetically speaking, from peoples in Asia about 25,000 years ago, hence why on most, if not all, DNA ancestry tests available today, "Native American" has its own unique racial classification and is not lumped in the same category/classification as "East Asian." In the unique case of Iranians, not only have we been isolated from our distant cousins in Europe for the last three to four thousand years, but we have also had a few alterations to our gene pool over the last two millennium, first by Semitic Arabs during the Islamic expansions of the 8th century AD, second by Central Asian Turkic tribes which invaded during the 11th Century AD (namely the Seljuk Turks, who descend from the Oghuz branch of the Turkic peoples, who would eventually set up the Seljuk Dynasty stretching from western Anatolia and the Levant to the Hindu Kush in the east, and from Central Asia to the Persian Gulf in the south), and thirdly by the Mongolian Empire in the 13th Century AD, which conquered the whole of Iran (along with many other lands, of course), effectively annexing the Khwarazmian Dynasty. The influx of nomadic Turkmen and Mongols into the Iranian Plateau from Central Asia, starting with the Seljuk Empire, and continuing with the Mongol Empire and later other Turco-Mongol invaders, was so significant, that out of it arose a distinct culture known as the "Turco-Persian Tradition," in which a symbiosis of the two cultures occurred that was Persian in that it was centered on a lettered tradition of Iranian origin, and it was Turkic/Mongolic insofar as it was founded by and for many generations to come patronized by rulers of Turkic and Mongolic heredity (Ilkhanate Khaganate, Timurid Empire, Safavid Dynasty, Qajar Dynasty, etc.) and would end up dominating Iran from 999 AD all the way up until 1921, when Reza Shah finally toppled the last Turkic Dynasty in Iran (Qajar Dynasty) in a coup d’état, officially founding the Pahlavi Dynasty four years later in 1925 (the first fully Persian Dynasty to rule Iran in over a millennium). In order of oldest to most recent, you could say that modern day Iranians are an amalgamation of the four following segments: (1) Indo-European Aryans who arrived in Iran about 4 thousand years ago from the Central Asian Steppes. Originally, they were nomadic, pastoral people inhabiting the western Iranian plateau. (2) Eastern Middle Eastern Farmers, otherwise known as the indigenous inhabitants of the Iranian Plateau that lived in Iran prior to the arrival of the Aryans from the north. These were the Elamites, who many historians believe were greatly outnumbered by the incoming Aryan speakers from the north, and eventually intermarried with the Aryan newcomers in mass, ultimately being absorbed by them to create a new Iranian race that gave rise to the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BC, officially bringing an end to the existence of Elam as an independent political power, although their cultural influence continued to live on and even lives to this day, (3) some admixture with Semitic Speakers as a result of the Islamic Conquest of Iran in the 7th Century AD by Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula, and to a lesser extent with large minorities of Jews and Assyrians who have been living in Iran alongside ethnic Iranians since Babylonian times, and (4) admixture with Turkic Nomads migrating in from Central Asia in three main waves, beginning with the Seljuks in the 11th century AD, Mongols in the 13th Century AD, and various Turkmen Tribes in the 16th Century AD, introducing a Central Asian/Eurasian component into the Iranian Gene pool that had not existed there before, as well as language misplacement from Farsi to Turkish languages via elite dominance, a legacy which lives to this day, namely among the Azeri, Qashqai, and Turkmen minorities of Iran. In spite of the fact that Iran has been at the crossroads of world history for thousands of years, geographically lying at the intersection of three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa, which culminated into many prehistoric and historic interactions with other groups (Indo-European speakers, and non-Indo-European speaking groups alike), a genetic study done by a team of scientists from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 2019, shows that the entire gene pool of those living inside the borders of Iran today has remained largely unchanged over at least 5,000 years, but probably rather the past 10,000 years. This is based on genetic data of 1,021 volunteers that identified themselves as belonging to one of eleven recognized ethnic groups living in Iran today (Persians, Azeris, Baluchi, Gilakis, Mazanderani, and Lurs, to name a few). Furthermore, the data suggests that even despite repeated invasions and conquests of Iran by non-Iranic invaders, modern day Iranians still share a segment of their DNA with modern day Europeans, being distantly related to Europeans as a whole, predominantly with Southern Europeans like Greeks, Albanians, Serbs, Croatians, Italians, Bosniaks, Spaniards, Macedonians, Portuguese, and Bulgarians, rather than northern Europeans like Norwegians, Danes, Swedes, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English, Finns, Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians, indicating a striking degree of homogeneity and genetic continuity over several millennia.

What's really interesting is that if you look at the Salian Franks and Etruscan mythological origin stories they both claim to be descendants of Trojans. It dawned on me today that when people criticized them for the location difference that they never considered that these people migrated west through the Mediterranean to the Rhine River or they migrated into the Black Sea through the Danube (perhaps both) to arrive at these locations. Perfectly explaining the western turkey location and transmission of R1b haplogroup to northern and northwestern Europe. He wouldn't surprise me if the Norse mythology of Yggdrasil (the world tree that connects the 9 realms) was actually the Rhine Delta and Danube rivers. After all the Salian Franks were located at the mouth of the Danube near the Rhine and then moved west of the Rhine when pushed out by other German tribes. A western people, the Trojans, were likely some mixture of Hittite and Greek influences.

You made a few mistakes my friend. 1. 9:19 the ancient Iranian samples are not a little more "European" shifted. Ironically the modern Iranians are. This is down to the fact that after the Medes and Persians had formed. There were several more migrations of smaller groups belonging to the Scytho_Sarmatian and Cimmerian branches. The ancient Medes and Persians are slightly more West Asian/Mediterranean/ shifted while modern Iranic speakers are a little more (North) European/Central Asian and Turkic shifted. But still there is like a 90% genetic continuity since the early days. So not much changed. 2. The Farmers that went into Europe were not actually Natufians and the Natufians were still Hunters and Gatherers. Western Asia saw three big agricultural groups. Anatolian Farmers, Iranic_East Caucasus Farmers and Levantine Farmers. The Anatolian Farmers populated pretty much all of Europe. the Zagros/Iranian farmers populated South_Central Asia and Eastern Europe. These Steppe Indo Europeans you mentioned were actually genetically around 50% descend of Farmers from the Zagros and Caucasus mountains. This is why when the Early Indo_Iranians met the BMAC and mixed with them, they were already predominantly (75%) of local West Asian origin. Also sidenote. You shouldn't try to explain migration solely with Haplogroups. It doesn't work this way. aDNA is the way to go. J2 does not guarantee native West Asian origin and R does not guarantee Steppe Indo European ancestry. J Haplogroups have been found in the very eariest Indo_Iranians. And R Haplogroups such as R1b m269 has been found in Calcolthic Anatolia , Caucasus and Iran.

When looking at the DNA clusters analysed, it appears that the Ancient Iranians had more steppe ancestry. How do we explain the Aryan Migrations otherwise? Are you able to show modern Iranian DNA clusters being closer to modern day Europeans? What you have written about the Farmers is true. Anatolian farmers were responsible for giving rise to the early European farmers. I used the early Natufians as a rather broad generalisation, as it did not tie in with the focal point of the video, and I did not want to digress too far off topic. The clear point that is trying to be made is that Europeans themselves have contributions from near eastern populations, and this is often times overlooked. Needless to say, you are right about this. As for the point regarding haplogroups, although autosomal DNA provides a clearer picture, we are still able to extract information from yDNA. Y DNA in particular can demonstrate the disposition of male populations. Say we have a higher proponent of a particular haplogroup which is known to have large frequencies within a population, and it makes a sudden appearance within a different population over time, it can be inferred that the males are having higher reproductive success. I often refer to haplogroups when exploring events where large demographic changes took place, whether it be the expansion of farming, Indo European migrations or any historic warfare where large demographic changes took place in general. A case example is the frequency of haplogroup C and O appearing in Central Asian populations following the migrations of both Turkic and Mongolic peoples. Although I acknowledge the point you are making.

It's sad how this connection has disappeared from the conscience of contemporary indians and iranians. From what I understand, Hungarians have also got some influence/mixing with Persians during their nomadic journey on the way to their final settlement in the Carpathian Basin. I can tell you one more thing to make you still more confused. Like me, an Iranian. There is a phrase or part of a text in the bible which says :"FINN and HUNGAR were two brothers who came from PERSIA. FINN= Finland, HUNGAR = Hungary. The theories of the anthropologists and historians are of course of high scientific value. I don't question the credibility of those theories although a lot of times these historical facts are manipulated and deliberately twisted and misrepresented mainly by Anglo-Saxon Europeans like the English. But one thing I, as a normal and curious individual believe a lot of us forget to acknowledge is the highly dynamic nature of ancient people. Emigrations have always been going on during the course of history and societies have always been mixing and moving more than we anticipate.

Sumeru people were Dravidian and relatives of Indus valley civilization which was called Melluha in ancient Mesopotamian seal. Sumerian cities viz Ur, Nippur or Assur has the suffix "ur" still found in many Indian cities like Kanpur, Nagpur and Jaipur. I took a recent DNA test and found out I’m 26 percent anotolia/ Caucasus as well as 17 percent Iran/Persia. I’ve been really exploring my roots and honestly gave me some closure. I’ve always thought my looks are so different, as in very dominant. But I’m still researching and I feel based on my skin tone and facial structure I lean towards more of the Turkish side. I have considered the possibility J2, which many see as a "Semitic" haplogroup identifier essentially, actually shows when Indians spread out from India and mixed with populations around the middle east, Arabia and east Africa. It is clear Iran does have some Indian admixture, more so than it has Arabic admixture despite what many might assume, and this probably goes back a long way. I think also the Gutian peoples were somewhat exotic, perhaps akin to Huns, Kurds or even Romani gypsies, and a lot makes sense when you study ancient allegiances, wars and who was continually aggressive towards whom. The bulk of native Iranian ancestry actually would be similar to the equivalent in Turkey (though Turkey was rather diversified by Greek migration, which explains east African/Ethiopian haplogroup there, and minor central Asian admixture) - Both Ancient Anatolians and Ancient Persians were essentially a mixture of the broader "Trojan" peoples, which I would say includes Scythians in large part (recent studies have actually argued PIE comes from Anatolia, not central Asia, and there is a lot of similarity between the costumes, weapons etc of Hittites and Scythians) and the native Hurrian and Caucasian peoples. It's also worth noting how closely Alexander and the Macedonians related to Ancient Persians- he took Persian wives, embraced Persian customs, not because he was interested in anything overly exotic but because he saw them as the same people in large part, which they were. I have huge love and respect for Iranians and though like Turks they aren't exactly the same as they were in antiquity, they similarly take a lot of pride in their ancient heritage, which is more than you can say about a lot of places. I also find the "pan-Arab nationalism" narrative particularly toxic and seems to be used as a way of firstly generalising in the west about "middle-easterners" and secondly as a way of basically denying several groups their own distinct regional identity. This also applies to the likes of Syrians, seen by many as an "Arab nation" even though they clearly aren't Arabs (though have some admixture) and identify in large part as Syrians, not Arabs. I also not sure sure the vast majority of Persians sure as hell don't identify as Arabs either hahaha. It would be like describing half of Europe as "Greek" because of conversion to Christianity, it's absurd.

Hence why you have to lie about R1a and R1b haplogroups claiming they're mongol, because you can't cope with the undisputed fact that western Europeans, particularly those in Britain, Ireland and even Basque country, have that Scythian haplogroup in extremely high concentrations (95%+). Must suck but Scythians originated in eastern Europe, not Asia. It is also basic logic that as Scythians were unambiguously white and european and genetics, linguistics and contemporary accounts of them clearly show that along with their artistic motifs and gods, (with Scythian simply being a convenient umbrella term for more archaic/semi-nomadic Eastern European tribes and confederacies), with terms like Wend/Vandal basically meaning the same thing indicating their nomadic or semi-nomadic nature, those in large part descended from them can indeed legitimately claim to be more Scythian than Asians descended from them in part while mixed with totally unrelated peoples. It's the same logic as me saying that French people or for example part British French people in Brittany are more British than part-British Jamaicans, Italians are more British than Jamaicans for that matter. It is our culture and falls under our collective European identity. That little is known of pre-Scythian culture in Iran beyond (European) Jiroft and Elamite and (Indian) Lurs and (non-European) Caucasians and whatever they simply borrowed from the Akkadian empire isn't really our problem. The genetic and cultural contribution of Scythians on a large scale in Europe is beyond debate. It is our heritage.

As an Iranian American, I'm so tired of Iranians acting like the most authentic Iranian is some blue-eyed, pale-skinned person and that the ultimate Iranian beauty is someone with fair skin and light eyes that resembles your average Northern European. Yes, the region of Iran is home to many fair-haired, white-skinned, light-eyed people, but that is not what necessarily makes an authentic Iranian. With the exception of someone like Golshifteh Farahani, it is almost as though Iranians are ashamed to hoist up a person with black hair, beige skin, and dark eyes as a representative of their country because they think that person looks more Indian or Arab. Andronovo groups cluster most closely to Norwegians than iranians. Present-day Kurds are an amalgam of multiple ancient groups, for example Medes/Persians, Assyrians/Armenians, and Hittites/Hurrians/Lydians. The idea that Kurds are the direct successor of Medes is something that was picked up by Kurdish nationalists and has been thoroughly debunked. It is at best a gross oversimplification.

The Kurds are mostly Chalcolithic and Neolithic Iranians and descended from the Hajji Firuz sample which is from Kermanshah. That means that Kurds are indeed of Median origin, but they are not the only people who originated from the Medes.

​@@bhka6423 I haven't seen the genetic studies, but based on geographical evidence, Medes would have absorbed non-Iranian indigenous tribes such as Mannaeans, and they invaded Hurrian/Urartian and also Assyrian area. Kurdistan region in present-day Iraq, effectively covers the entire ancient Assyrian homeland. I don't believe that Medians remained reproductively isolated from all the peoples they conquered. It is more reasonable to assume that present-day Kurds received genetic input from all the various tribes that once occupied the area - not Medians alone. I suspect that genetically this would be reflected in the fact that Kurds are more west shifted.

Yea I said for years. Kurds are descendant from Medes. PARTIALLY a partiality is a oversimplification. Kurds descend from dozens of ethnicities of Iranic and Anatolian origins but of different percentage and even then it overlaps in ancestry with other ethnicities. Not exclusive and not a universal for all in each Kurdish tribe. Nuanced stuff like that. Kurds are a product of a fusion of people into becoming a Confederation. They are X, Y and Z ethnicities as a subsequent product but those same ethnicities are in themselves not Kurds in the rule of subsequent history events.

This genetic study confirms that Kurds are the descendants of the Medes and also Iraqi Kurds who are Assyrian, according to you. All Kurds descend from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Iranian sample and also from the Aryans. What another study also says is that DNA from the BMAC culture was found in Kurds.

An interesting point I want to mention is regarding the part where it talks about incorporating peoples from South Russian Steppe (e.g. Scythians) into the models. Perhaps the authors were unaware, but Scythians had an an alliance with Assyrians against Medes; and Cimmerians (another people of approximately the same kind) had an an alliance with Medes against Assyrians! Intermarriages would have taken place (e.g. the Scythian king married the daughter of Asarhaddon). But, in any case, the paper is at best a simulation based on insufficient evidence and data. They used very few isolated ancient samples that they interpreted to be whatever may appeal to their imagination (that is how they deduced what a “Mede” genetic profile would have looked like). My point is that you can't connect a modern ethnicity like Kurd to only one single ancient population. Modern people received input from multiple groups. Even the paper you linked does not dispute this.

Hello, I'm Hmong and I've stumbled across a couple of readings saying that we were originally from Iran, migrated through the Steppe and eventually ended up Eastern China. We may be proto-Mongols too but if anyone knows anything about Hmong please share.

No. Hmong are not really related to Mongols at all. You are closer to Chinese people.
