As a young boy in the 90s, living in a sexist country such as Brazil, I was ashamed to admit to others how much I liked Cardcaptor Sakura and Corrector Yui. I was afraid of saying my favorite character in Saint Seiya was Shun - and, yes, I'm still pissed off, Netflix - because that would be "gay" [even though I'm straight]. It took me many years to feel comfortable with liking shoujo anime, so I find this video to be super important to help bridge that "gender gap". Thanks, Cristal.

I think i enjoy shojo more than most shonen. There's something about the story that just makes you feel good and gets you invested with the characters. Fights are nice but sometimes i need a break from all the action. There was a point i only was watching slice of lifes and shojo because they just made me feel good inside.

For what it's worth, the biggest shoujo fans at my admittedly very weird high school were all boys! Now myself and many of the other girls did watch shoujo some, but none of us could compete with those guys. And now that I'm in college, the two male officers in my current school's anime club are also the two officers most enthusiastic about romantic comedy shows and thus often champion shoujo series when we put together the lists of shows our members vote on watching each semester. Usually at least one shoujo series wins (we watch 3 shows per semester)

@Hakajin

Chobits is... very interesting. Like, the main romance is problematic: it may be healthy within the diagesis of the manga/anime, but that's not realistic, and I was always uncomfortable with how sexualized Chii was (especially given her mental age). That having been said, a lot of the secondary characters and relationships were very compelling! Even if I've forgotten some of their names, I've never forgotten about the pastry chef falling in love with his persocom, how his new love interest thought she couldn't compare; the teacher whose husband forgot about her when they got a persocom, and how she didn't end up hating persocoms because the same could've happened with a real person; Freya's situation... Which, with that last one, I'm honestly glad CLAMP was willing to go to some taboo places, because it was thought-provoking, and seemed like something that could happen. The story really did explore a lot of potential societal issues with humanoid robots. And... In some ways I think the central theme is underdeveloped, to the extent that I didn't even get it for a long time. On the other hand, I'm impressed with the subtlety. Because I did finally figure it out, one English degree and many years later. The question is this: can we ever have functional relationships with robots, despite being unable to know whether they're sentient like we are? The reason it's kind of confusing is because we, the audience, know that Chii and the others are indeed conscious from seeing their internal experience. On the other hand, the human characters in the story can't know this: conscious experience is unobservable because it is observation itself; we can look for signs and behaviors. A lot of the issues the manga raises are tangential to this (e.g. the question of whether Chobits can function outside of their programming has to do with free will). But yeah, letting the audience know the truth of the matter while also not having the other characters address the issue directly made things really confusing. In any case! Those themes resonate with me because of my own intense attachments to fictional characters. Sure, in that case it's not a question of sentience, but Hideki's decision and his reasons for it spoke to me. I have a sneaking suspicion that CLAMP Is also interested in relationships with fiction, because... I'm not sure if this was the intention, but it occured to me once while reading Cardcaptor Sakura that I could read Clow/Eriol as author stand-ins, making predictions about where the story's going to go and purposefully putting the characters through stuff for the sake of character development. Also with Tsubasa, what happens at the end with the clones, where they end up...

I LOVE CLAMP!!! Their manga is the reason why I'm into anime and have been a major part of my life. It started the Tsubasa Resuvoir Chronicles and it grew from there! I have read/seen: Tsubasa Resuvoir Chronicles xxxHolic Cardcaptor Sakura Magic Knight Rayearth CLAMP School Detectives Chobits X/1999 Tokyo Babylon The Legend of Chu'yan And maybe more that I read and can't remember their names. Not to mention MULTIVERSE QUEENS!!! Their art style is legendary!!! I mean, Code Geass and Blood C! Yes!!!! These ladies are a big part of why I got interested in anime and manga. I love Tsubasa for its concept of the Multiverse and Tragic Love Story. Syaoran and Sakura ARE MY OTP as I started shipping them and Touya x Yukito before I even knew what Shipping was! Magic Knight Rayerth had the BIGGEST plot twist I've seen in my life, and that's saying something. I will not say it as it is a spoiler. xxxHolic gives you insight on what goes on behind the scenes of everything and how each dimension is roughly connected. As well as spiritual shenanigans from Watanuki and his friends. Yuko is a TOTAL QUEEN!!! Edit: Wait, they did Saint Seiya doujin? BRO WHAT?! I didn't know that! Then again I just got into Saint Seiya last year (Andromeda Shun best boy for me)!

Got into CLAMP in the early 00s, with manga *summaries* of the early CLAMP Campus series (before scans!), and even have Rayearth from the old MIXX/Tokyopop era. So much of their work speaks to you on multiple levels - the narrative, the challenging character morality/motives, and of course the beautiful art. Not only their gorgeous inner spreads, but the books' design, with vellum and color pages, extra jacket art, and the X/1999 Spine of Spoilers! I have a lot of their work in Japanese originals and English - plus they're a hearty slice of my artbook collection.

@@_.Max.i.mus._ That men are women are the same, traditional gender roles is now backward thinking and always a bad thing and anyone who doesn't have the same view is wrong and should be educated (the typical western moral superiority complex). Just look at Japan or even Korea these societies are modern and are the amongst most developed in the world but they're fine with their traditional and cultural values (that's what makes them different and why we are attracted to them in the first place) and in many cases women themselves are the main keepers of these values. A Japanese feminist officials actually spoke up against the UN attempt to paint manga and anime as sexist and misogynistic stating that a lot of these stories are imagined, written and drawn by women (the entire Clamp studio and animes like Rising of the shield hero are good examples) and Japan always opposed any attempt to censor or dictate their creations. Even if you check the audience you'll see that although a lot of women read shonen mangas, the majority of the audience is still men and although shojo also catch the interest of men (Chobbit, Tsubasa reservoir chronicle, DN Angel, etc) the majority of the audience is still composed of women. So we can criticize as much as we want because it doesn't suit our views but as long as Japan is fine with it, it's not our place to say they should change. Remember that mangas and anime are made first and foremost for the Japanese audience, the rest of the world is just a nice bonus for their market.

Excellent essay!! I only have one thing to add regarding X/1999. If I'm not mistaken I read somewhere that in the last few years Mokona has not been able to draw as she used to (not with the same frequency/output anyways) because of something like carpal tunnel syndrome affecting her wrists. Her style is the prominent one in X/1999 and that may be one of the reasons why they didn't pick up X again sadly, there's no way they can continue it exactly the same way probably. I mean, looking at Card Captor Sakura Clear Card, the artwork resembles Mokona's original art style but it isn't quite the same probably because of that, it is likely either Nekoi or Igarashi's style heavily inspired by Mokona's to keep some coherence with the original manga. Oh well, we can nonetheless hope that they'll someday pick up X again, even if the art style changes.

Their output is extraordinary, and their coloured art is breathtaking. They may have been more popular in the 90s and early 2000s, but their place in manga history is sealed. I hope that more people come to love them in the future. My top 5 CLAMP manga: 5. CCS 4. Kobato/Tokyo Babylon 3. Suki 2. MKR 1. Chobits

This is an excellent video! See, I'm glad that Chobits was mentioned explicitly, because I think people are a bit too quick to write its conception off because they aren't aware that it was made by women. Not to say that it doesn't still have some problematic elements, but I think it's not nearly as bad as people let on because it is clearly self-aware, and as much as it's about a dude falling in love with a sex robot, it's also about a sex-robot developing autonomy and a sense of self. Like the contrast is kinda the point. With that in mind, I'd say the series is generally not problematic at all, especially with how chaste it is compared to how it would probably be in today's market... but I agree that that doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't taken the wrong way, especially if you were reading/watching for the wrong reasons or, god forbid, didn't get towards the end, I can see how the overall impression would be infantilising and sexually objectifying (literally) woman.

Love CLAMP! That's where I get my inspiration from, most notably their interconnected multiverse. For my stories: Lonely, Fantasia, and Euphoria: God's Daughter all take place in the same timeline/universe within each works or with 2049, an apocalyptic story. Tragedy Awaits is the prequel to 2049 because the last chapter deals with end of the world in Times Square. Codename Ultimate will be a mega crossover of every work, but with alternate versions of the characters within the universe. That's why I love CLAMP because they're very creative with their world building and themes.

Blaming Chobits for the moe & lolicon boom just isn't accurate. That stuff started in '79 after Lupin The Third: Castle of Cagliostro came out. Clarisse became a fandom Darkhorse character among anime otaku. It also lead to the lolicon boom of the 80's, which was how anime otaku (in Japan) became synonymous with "Perverts obsessed with Little Girls." Lolicon enthusiasts lifted some aesthetics from shoujo manga (ribbons, lacey dresses, female POV's) but they were predominantly men making content for other men to enjoy. That isn't to say that women didn't also contribute to that fandom (horniness & cute aesthetics seems to appeal to all genders) but the Chobits manga was first published in 2000 and the first loli hentai fanzines were coming out in 1982. I hate lolicon, yet I ended up learning a lot about it when I was learning everything I could about moe. They can't be used interchangeably, but there is some overlap.

There are several sources citing why Chobits had a particular effect on the lolicon “romance” boom. While lolis/moe might’ve had other precursors too (we could point to some shungas), Chobits depicted a fully realized romance and established a loli aesthetic in works meant to appeal to girls/women. I should probably go deeper into this in another video! I only covered it briefly in “Why, Fanservice?” on Get In The Robot. :)

You also had shoujo mangaka who drawn exclusively loli romance 2 meters tall dudes. In an interview, she said she never had great experiecnce with grown women. Regardless, Japan' s narative and art are now sought over the world because the writers does not write to conform to consumer demands. They write whatever they want if possible and whatever you like or dislike came from that artistic freedom.

@@CristalMarie I remembered Chobits as shounen, though. It had similar feels to DearS, written and drawn by women but clearly written with male fantasy in mind.
