Yeah, I didn't know this until I mentioned the weird transition in "8th Son Are You Kidding Me", but it's a sort of trope in Japan that falling asleep and dying is a common result of overwork at a "black company" where they abuse their their employees and force them to work way too many hours. It's almost certainly the "cause of isekai" for "Death March to a Parallel World Rhapsody" as well, even though the main character doesn't assume that's what happened.

I could never pick out if Yuyu was an Isekai because so many early ones didn't have their characters die when they were transported.. They were usually missing or time was very different. I think more modern isekai use death and rebirth than most traditional.

I don’t know if you’d count it as isekai, but there was an anime adaptation of a couple of the Oz books. I dunno what you’d classify a tornado as when Dorothy did survive it. Mystery I guess? Also while the isekai method in Dog Days was magical, it would better fit in the Summoning sub-category as the protagonist was singled out as the one the doggy princess wanted as her hero. Because while scrying to find one she saw him trying to fight back tears when he narrowly missed first place in a Ninja Warrior competition and thought something along the lines of “OMG so cute must hug”. Yes, I’ve watched Dog Days. DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT!

I’m actually watching kakuriyo rn because this introduced me to it :) if anyone likes it I have a very similar anime, Adorable Food Goddess it’s a Chinese anime but it’s very similar except the yokai aspect… it’s about a girl who died from food poisoning and another girl who killed herself, she inhabits the girl who kills herself and was being sold of to be married. She tries to escape but slowly starts to like it there and becomes a chef alongside the wife of the master she was sold off to.

Not in the spirit realm. Just on an island isolated behind a barrier. The 3 Kings Arc and Chapter Black Arc are in the Demon realm. There's also a video-game Isekai during the Sensui Arc with the kid. You could also argue the earlier Maze Castle takes place in the Demon Realm and Botan frequrently goes between the Human and Spirit Realm.

People forget that Yu Yu Hakusho has a isekai arcs. The Spirit Detective saga starts with sports car (a sub-set of Truck-kun). Yusuke goes to Spirit World with Botan. Yusuke returns to Spirit World with team during the Four Saint Beast arc. In the Chapter Black Saga the team travels to demon world and again during the Three Kings Saga.

Considering that Super Mario is an Italian-American plumber from Brooklyn, New York, and he just so happens to be in the Mushroom Kingdom for the vast majority of the franchise, Super Mario Bros.
