I simply must voice the same irritation I experience when confronted with the misconception that people in premodern ages were “old men” at forty years. Any reader of historical documents immediately finds that no one was surprised at men of eighty still functioning as writers, rulers etc. When perhaps half of all infants die before reaching childhood, the average “life expectancy” obviously goes down a lot. But in classical or medieval times, basically if you lived to seven years old, you would probably live to seventy. Thanks for your work!

Thank you AM. I especially appreciate the catechism quote at the end. Only one thing is needful.

Greetings AM. A banal question, but the translation you read at the beginning is beautiful; is it Hollander's? Thank you for this brilliant lecture. Simon Edit- I see that it's from the Kirkpatrick-certainly going to use it for my next read through of this poem beyond poetry. Grateful for your sharing it.

How that big brain fits into your head is beyond me. This is what you get when lectured by people whose stomach is the only thing ever to have lead a successful military campaign.
