This is a great list, it's just missing Zodiac.

Memories of Murder is a bit better and hits all the same notes.

@@curtisbowman6199 I actually agree. It’s almost sacrilegious to say, but I even like Memories of Murder better than Parasite. But I still do think Zodiac is a good film in its own right that should also be included.

I agree. Memories of murder is such a gut punch. It plays without that usually these movies are set up to have our heroes try and we catch the vicious killer. But the fact that this was an open case in Korea for so many years shows how even win we expect our institutions to protect us they are just as fallible as we are. Also fun fact the fact that this movie did help to reinvigorate the investigation and help to actually find the murderer shows how reflective power of trauma does affect collective consciousness.

All of these films feature fictional rather than actual killers, even if some were inspired by real cases, so that disqualifies Zodiac (which I agree is a gripping movie).

Good choices, but Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt has a great performance by Joseph Cotton as the murderous Uncle Charlie, a psychopath far more believable than most on this list. It's understandable that you would want to limit it to one Hitchcock, though.

“tempers the book’s misogyny” give me a break man this argument about American Psycho has already been re-litigated for years. Just because Patrick Bateman (a psychopathic serial killer!) is a misogynist doesn’t make the novel misogynist. What a baby brained take.
@bobbyw7113 жыл бұрын
Exactly.... also I’m pretty sure that is the least of his problems. Was he a bad tipper too?! lol the guy was a fucking murder for Christ sake, is he supposed to be a feminist serial killer? Lol

If it has been "re-litigated for years" then presumably there are legitimate, honestly held opinions on both sides, and simply declaring yourself right and the other side "baby brained" is ironic, as that is precisely what a child would do. "I'm right and you're stupid SO THERE." Without getting too far into it, I would imagine one could make non-frivolous arguments that portraying a character with such extreme contempt for women by its nature invites misogynistic projections and identification into the world. I seriously doubt Ellis would object to this statement, and would say that is exactly what he was hoping to do, and that while most will understand that these are the views of the character, and are to be despised, some will not, and will identify and empathize with the lead character. Ellis thinks that balance is worth it. It's not a stupid position to take to say that it is not, and that Ellis is simply granting himself permission to be transgressive because he enjoys the notoriety. I'm not here to judge between the positions; on the whole I enjoyed the book, found it by turns very funny and very upsetting, and think it generally earns its place in the world. But the idea that anyone who disagrees with me is stupid, or childish, is itself pretty f**king dumb.
