A History of Men's Figure Skating Step Sequences Including Yuzuru Hanyu!

I would like to just let everyone know a bit about this video..... It was an absolute nightmare to get it allowed to be shown on KZbin! It turns out I had a hard time to get it uploaded! My original idea was to play all the step sequences with the original music and how the crowd reacted going crazy for it! Turns out KZbin wouldn't let me, so that was cut and replaced me me talking Iver the video instead. Next I had a 6th skater... Nathan Chen. It turns out that having that man in the video at all would mean that it was instantly blocked from being allowed on KZbin. So Nathan had to go. A bit more music had to be removed and then finally the video was allowed! This video took more time to créât than ANY OTHER VIDEO I HAVE EVER UPLOADED TO KZbin! I hope everyone enjoys it. I will only make enough if the video gets lots of likes and views as it was such a headache to produce 😂 I thought it would be a fun topic to look at. Full respect to all the skaters I included, they are all amazing ❤️

Why didn't you pick another performance of Nathan's, he's given his best Nemesis performances at Rostelecom Cup and Skate America, not the Olympics (although, I'm aware this would've required you to do a reshoot of that segment).

I had actually picked Nathan Chen 2018 World championship SP as it was his first World title (I think) and to be quite honest the step sequence and performance in that was brilliant. But it would have been a lot of work to find a video and reshoot everything to hope that youtube would let me upload it. The gamble would be worth it if I was sure people would enjoy the video, but I wasn't sure people would like this type of content either!

Maybe in another video I will find a Nathan program that youtube will let me upload without blocking it. Blame Fuji TV, they were the copyright owner that blocked the video 👎 I'm happy to hear you like the video though! I thought there might be a lot of Yuzu fans as a lot of the students I teach skating to on zoom have pictures of Yuzu on their walls! I'm also a fan of his by the way 😁

Ice Coach Online Yeah I realised later on, that your clip was from World's not the Olympics. I just assumed, because I know that any clips from the 2018 Olympics have been a copyright nightmare on youtube. It's silly that Fuji TV is so protective, since the whole Men's SP from those World's is on youtube for free on the ISU's website. But I guess this applies to any of their material and is just a blanket thing. And though it's nice you enjoyed his performance at World's, I thought he was rather tense there, understandably so after both his Olympic SPs went this badly. So I would still recommemd to everyone to go and look at his early performances of Nemesis in the fall, which were much more uninhibited and carefree ;)

Yuzuru must be on every single list of figure skating moves. He can do everything! He defies the laws of gravity and sanity. Because only a crazy person would continue competing after a serious accident on ice (BTW he won silver at that time). I love watching him. He's the best of the best!

I love Yagudin's toe steps. I was never a Yagudin fan but those toe steps truly stepped into my heart. I love Yuzuru for sure,but I really really LOVE toe steps. Pluchenko's toe steps in tribute to nijinsky were AMAZING! BTW,one thing about Yuzu is that he never stops evolving. Love him so much.

Yagudins winter sun step sequence was brilliant. Plushenko had very very fast toe steps, he was a very dynamic skater in the era or fast toe steps. Very entertaining to watch and yes, his nijinsky program step sequence was brilliant. And yes, Yuzu never stops evolving! That's how he is still competing at the top level after already winning 2 Olympic titles. Crazy that he is trying for a 3rd, but he just keeps getting better.

Jason brown is a great skater! You don't have to do quads to be very entertaining. I was sticking to a 4 year jump at the Olympics which is why I didn't include Jason brown in this video. I will certainly include him in future videos if people are interested in seeing more!

I'm 25 years old and have a distant memory of watching Yagudin at the olympics in the 2nd grade. From there I followed him along with Plushenko and Joubert then took a break from figure skating. Discovered Lambiel a couple years later when he was on the show Thin Ice. Stopped watching fugure skating for a number of years and then rediscovered it with Yuzuru Hanyu in 2014. I keep coming back to this sport for some reason! Lol

Lovely! Step sequences are so underrated! But if used taking advantage of the music they can become the highlight of the program! As I see it, if the audience applauds the step sequence then you know you have a great program

I noticed that it's mainly jumps and spins that are covered, which i why I went another way with this video! People seemed to enjoy it though, so i'll do more 🙂

I had to smile about two things that you pointed out in Yuzu's example: 1) Slowing down to be able to do the Loop - this is something I always notice when watching programs, because I know this struggle all too well. I like to go into turns and Choctaws etc. with some speed (speed is very relative here of course ;P I mean what passes for "speed" for someone my level) plus, then you also frequently gain additional speed while doing them. And then it's always a challenge to get Loops and Twizzles incorporated into such footwork in a seamless, interesting or "sensible" way, because sadly I can't do those with the same speed (normal on Loops I assume, as for Twizzles, I'm just horrendously bad at them and also scared of doing them). 2) Picking up speed by using a series of toe steps - that's a classic "trick". Yuna Kim immediately comes to mind, she used to do this all the time in her step sequences. It's often a nice choreographic touch and certainly a nice tool to re-accelerate after an intentional stop/slow down or choreo move in a StSq. But sometimes it's also a dead giveaway, that a skater loses too much flow on his/her turns and needs to cover it up ;). Voila, strategically placed toe steps disguised as choreo. Well I guess technically toe steps are still steps and therefore "ok" and skaters doing crossovers to gain speed during their sequences are the "worse offenders" ;).

Loops are the turn the need to be performed slowly, as the blade goes in the same skating direction the entire time. Other turns can be done with a lot more speed(though the faster you go, the harder it is to do them without falling, especially twizzles). Also, if you see Ice Dance teams go into their twizzle sequences with not much speed across the ice, this is much easier to do that teams that go really fast into the their twizzles. Unfortunately the judges marks don't often reflect this. The toe step trick is a good one, it make the program appear more fluid. If they put a load of crossovers in instead, it would look a bit basic in comparison. The best skaters maintain good flow through their turns with good technique and put in the toe step occasionally to get a quick acceleration, which makes the sequence look more dynamic.

@@IceCoachOnline Well, it's Dick Button in 1952, and he even tweeted a congrats to Yuzu for his second medal. The one before that is Gillis Grafström, 1920, 24 and 28, but he don't count because he's Swedish. :P We're only good at sports when they are new enough that most people haven't even discovered them yet, let alone gotten good at them. As soon as there is legit competition, we fall flat. Salchow actually never won 2 olympic golds, but he's Swedish, too, so he don't count anyway. ^_~

So interesting! I don't really know much about past figure skaters (Definitely want to check out that Alexi guy. He seemed so clean with his footwork 🤤 #goals). I just love skating and want to learn. Lately I have been interested in step sequences. I was just about to learn rockers and counters before the outbreak. One good thing is that you guys put out off ice tutorials for it. Alexei Yagudin was a brilliant skater, he was 4 time world champion and his biggest rival was a young Evgeni Plushenko. The would be back and fourth between who would win each competition. Part of what makes Plushenko so impressive is that even after this rivalry he went on to compete for another 9 years! Skaters would come and go while he was competing, and even after all his operations (new hip, knee, disks in his back and more), he was still able to compete doing quadruples. Anyway, i'm glad you enjoyed the video and my ratings 😁 I'll be making more off ice tutorials on steps too 🙂

You should go back even further to the 1970's and 1980's to show two superb exponents of fast, intricate step sequences: Robin Cousins and Alexander Fadeev.

I adore watching step sequences! Oh, how I want to skate like they do! Thank you so much for the blow-by-blow of what they are doing. But Lloyd, big complaint here: How could you leave out Scott Hamilton's 1984 Olympic program steps?!? He was the Grand Master of step sequences before most of these skaters were born! Hanyu Yuzuru is the greatest skater of his generation. No one can argue about that. His skating is magic to watch! It's too bad you couldn't include Nathan Chen. I would like to know what his steps were.

I could tell you both the steps from Yuzu's and Nathan's sequences, because I know both of them by heart after having watched them countless times XD But I think the requirements in 13/14 and 17/18 were already quiter similar, if not the same ones? So any step sequence by an elite skater aiming for a level 4 from those years 'til now will contain the same (minimum of) types of steps ;) It's just the order in which they're done that differs and they might add some little individual details

You're welcome, glad you liked it 🙂 So why did I skip over Scott Hamilton? Just because I decided to start in 1998 and work my way up, and one of the most well known step sequences from 1998 was Phillipes. Scott Hamilton is amazing with his footwork, then so is kurt browning! Two of my favourite skaters of all time. I can do more videos like this with their footworks in, maybe looking at a different time period. I really did try to include Nathan, I tried two different programs of his, filmed, edited, uploaded, and denied! I didn't have it in the me to try for a 3rd Chen program, I was too frustrated 😭

You are correct, to hit the level 4 they have to meet certain criterias that result in the step sequences looking quite similar! Did you prefer Chen or Hanyu?

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes I think the next would be easier as I understand how to avoid certain problems now! Yes I really wanted to play the music with the crowd without me talking over it, as it shows how the audience was captivated by the performance and drove wild by the step sequence! I think I can put a link to originals in the description, I'll look into it! It does make me wonder how other people managed to upload it when KZbin blocked my efforts to show a very small clip of a performance in my video.

Great idea! But did you know that when it came to Nathan chen in 2018 worlds...... Even with the audio removed, video in slow motion AND video cropped..... KZbin still would not let me include him in the video without it being blocked! I'm not kidding when I wrote that I tried EVERYTHING to get this video accepted 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I only can practice the Philippe step sequence - who can the others anyway lol - but i never thought about it, even patterns, what a waste of time!!! And me too when i think about Evgeni i think about the muscle suit 😂 Damn i miss when skating was more entertaining even if i won't complain about the modern quads And Alexei on riverdale would have been amazing omg Also i never realised that Yuzu doesn't have plan b, what a competitor :o Big thumbs up to Nathan to compete with a guy like this lol

you can practice at least segments of the other step sequences with no problems ;D (albeit with much less speed XD) And Yuzu is not the only one launching into his step sequence without pause right after his last jumping pass, speaking of Nathan, him and Yuzu even do this directly after landing a quad combination ;)
