Star Trek: Enterprise gave a little insight of Klingon history too. A Klingon told Archer that not all Klingons were warlike. Many were scientists, philosophers, philanthropists. The Klingon Warrior culture basically conquered the whole planet, probably (after viewing this video) because they are the only ones who really survived the alien invasion. They’re always the exception.
@killersalmon43595 жыл бұрын
I think it was a combination of Sioux, Japanese (Tokugawa period), probably some bits borrowed from the Mongols, etc. Frankly, I preferred John Ford's depiction of Klingons (from The Final Reflection) than what came out ST: TNG and DS9 since Ford's depiction of them wasn't some goulash of historical warrior cultures, but something truly unique, and alien: A race in which the people matured quickly (fully grown at five...or some other ridiculously low age), but which, as a result, had a maximum life span of 40-50 years, a "race" that was also extremely diverse since they absorbed all the races they conquered and took as slaves, and off-spring between Klingons and their concubines (who were often from the races they took captive) were also regarded as Klingons, so much so, that one main character (who is Klingon) has to ask a slave, "Are you a Klingon?". And a race that was sneaky, back-handed, etc. (like they were in the old show), but also with their own code of honor that was consistent with being sneaky, back-handed, etc. I would highly recommend The Final Reflection - it plays out sort of like a Klingon Godfather.

steve gale What are you talking about? “Vikings” is the term used specifically for the seafaring Scandinavian raiders, it’s not a broad term for any old band of marauding warriors
@DaniReick5 жыл бұрын
@steve gale At one point he is right, viking is linked to sea. The term more likely means "sailor" than "marauder", so far that we might call the translation "buccaneer". Vic = bay in old Scandinavian. Talk about studying stuff (& making such a critical mistake... ) About the mongol inspiration I don't buy that. The inspirations of this races mostly stick to each other and are influenced by some history at a point. The Romulans connection to the Romans implies the Vulcans connection to the Greek and so on. Following that, the Klingons would represent the old Germanic tribes. Possible but still I wouldn't buy that. ;)

@VadulTharys4 жыл бұрын
Would be boring they were agrarian, inclined to poetry, meditation, and philosophy. What changed them into the first war like feudal societies were alien meddling then later invasions in retaliation. The expanded history of the Klingons earliest days and their creation myth are based on an advanced alien race that came to their world and decided to "modify" them as a new slave class. That triggered a long repressed violent tendency and they killed their "gods" (Advanced aliens bioengineers) The rest of their history up to the Hur'q invasion is due to retribution from that race. Klingons may have been primitives but slaves they would never be, and that caused nearly 4000 years of invasions, meddling ect until the Klingons gained mastery over warp technology. Some 3000 years after capturing and then using alien ships to try and hunt them down.

Realistically I would imagine Humanity and Klingon's getting along fairly well. Especially if the federation or a form like it was based on current human culture. Once Klingon's get access to human history they would no doubt see the many forms of empires and cultures humanity has had and its nearly 10000 years or more of constant warfare. Like Klingons humans by themselves are a militaristic species capable of learning and adapting to changes in battle and improving weapons to being more lethal and efficient. If anything a Klingon might be concerned of Terran's being coldly efficient and brutal in combat. Of course thats with dealing with modern humans if they used fed style tech.
@vishnu798 жыл бұрын
Essentially, in universe, they do. Of all the species the Klingons have encountered, they like the Humans the most, mostly because Humans can (mostly) understand their honor system and (mostly) respect it, and have an honor system of their own that the Klingons can (mostly) understand and (mostly) respect. Also, Humans are always willing to throw down with the Klingons in a friendly neighborhood war and happily blast each other one minute, then help them out when their moon explodes over their homeworld the next. They also tend to help each other out when assholes from other neighborhoods (Dominion/Gamma Quadrant, Borg/Delta Quadrant) come around to start shit. As the guy in the video said, they're best frenemies.

What about the 1960's Klingon from the Original Series or are we just calling that "lack of make-up"
@VadulTharys4 жыл бұрын
The lack of ridges was due to a virus that was accidentally created when they experimented with the DNA splicing that created Khan the super human that became Kirks nemesis. Took them years to find a cure, killed a few million but left several hundred thousand without ridges. Those were all shunted off to the edges of the Empire which is why in TOS they encountered Klingons with no ridges. - Canon explanation. Gene Rodenberry always envisioned them with ridges but the make up of the 1960s was not up to the task. So they created that story arc through TNG, DS9 and Enterprise. You can see the Klingon Kirk was always having runs ins with from TOS in DS9 with ridges. The virus was cured and his ridges came back. Was the same actor as well, but in DS9 he was an ancient Dahar Master who took Worf looking for the sword of Kahless.

Fascinating video. I personally always found the klingons' aggressive behavior to be compensating for internal insecurities. They are quite transparent, and they never really impressed me much. I also have a theory that they stole warp technology from the hur'Q and reverse-engineered it. I doubt klingons would ever be able to create the technology themselves.
@Trekspertise8 жыл бұрын
I've been wondering about that myself.
@JanetStarChild8 жыл бұрын
Trekspertise Yeah, I suspect it's not too different from how the Terran Empire stole technology from the vulcans and other species. To me, it explains how the Klingon Empire could ever become a great power in the galaxy, right up there with the Federation and Romulan Star Empire; two factions which should logically be way more powerful and advance.

That is great to hear! Your analyses are so complete and in-depth; I love them all, especially "The Case for Gul Dukat." I had never though of him as the perfect archetypal villain-I just knew I enjoyed disliking the character...lol I'm hoping you get a chance to squeeze in some Weyoun and/or General Martok (they're my favorite tertiary characters).

Totally Awesome Commentary!!!! and the funky ass music playing in the background, would love to see a group of Klingons playing it, with their OWN ethnic instruments! all while slightly rocking in unison with a Klingon groove.

This is our instinctive nature when we humans are broke, beaten and left to fend for ourselves. 6 years old and living on the streets. By 8 we are arrested by police and by 10 we klingons. If you haven't lived it don't judge to no make a joke out of psychology.

Wasn't there an early episode Enterprise where a Klingon bemoaned the militarization of a once diverse culture?

Excellent! I imagine you will also talk about the Klingon TOS versus movies and later series. I liked how Enterprise handled it, but I feel like they missed an opportunity with the DS( Tribbles episode to let Worf tell the story.
@Lokiawa8 жыл бұрын
Bob Barnwell With TV episodes it's usually "One plot at a time." plus I think it was better they didn't explain that in that episode, as Worf said "It is a long story.."

for people who claim to be secular these Klingons seem awfully religious have their own afterlife their own spirits their own Messiah like figure prophesied to return all these things sound very little religious to me Maybe not a theist religion but still a religion
@Dargonhuman8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that too, though I suppose if we differentiate spiritualism from religion, they could have one without the other. What I mean is, their spiritual beliefs (the afterlife, a messianic figure, etc.) dictate their actions and morality, which can be open to reinterpretation and malleable enough to easily adapt to previously unknown circumstances, whereas religion can be seen as a rigid, strict set of rules to live by and is less adaptable to change.
@bryanmcclure22208 жыл бұрын
Dargonhuman except that rigid and strict is exactly how the Klingon are described. For goodness sake there still following the warrior, honor system formed thousand of years ago under a feudalistic society. And those Klingon not who don't fit into this warrior, honor system are despised by the rest of society.
@Dargonhuman8 жыл бұрын
Bryan McClure I see what you're saying, but consider how flexible their definition of honor and their warrior code actually is compared to devout religious warrior societies like the Jem'Hadar. If the Klingon code was that strict, then the Klingons would never have fought with the Romulans during the Dominion War, hell, they would have never allied with the Federation after Praxis exploded. As for their views of non-warriors, Klingons tend to have a more condescendingly tolerant attitude towards non-warriors; they don't think highly of other professions like doctors, engineers, farmers, etc. but they at least recognize the necessity for such positions in a functional society. Granted, the Klingon mindset does prefer that an individual should be a warrior first and whatever else second, but they still grudgingly acknowledge that the warrior's life isn't for everyone, even if they don't necessarily *respect* that fact.
@iiiiitsmagreta12408 жыл бұрын
I agree - I find it ironic how they're secular to the point where they overthrew their own gods, and yet their society is built around the worship and emulation of Kahless. It's a very interesting double standard which I'd love to see the show explore at some point.
@bryanmcclure22208 жыл бұрын
Mattias Westby The rejects of the old gods and the emilation of Kahless reminds me of rise of comunizem and mao zedong. Let me be clear I am not saying that Kahless and mao zedong share any personality trats. Moe was a mad man, who encouraged cruelty and hate. Kahless promoted bravery and honor. However there are some similarities to how there were received by there own people. This is not a criticism of Klingon society just an observation Under the cultural revolution The Chinese rejected the old traditionally Chinese forms of spiritual and religious Buddhism and Confucianism, as well the more traditionally western view like Christianity. (similarly the Klingon rejected and killed the old gods) After the cultural revolution. Moe and Communism rose to replace the old way. Communism became more then a economic system, it became an ideal that must be spreed to the rest of the world. To express any criticism of the communist system was treason and heresy. While the Klingon were never as extreme or zealous as the Communist in china, non the less they do seem to have a allmost religions fervor when it comes to there warrior, honor system. (I not saying this as criticism of the klingons, and have fervor in any veiwpoint dose not make you an extremist, I am only pointing out that the honerable warrior systme seem to have replace the role of traditional religion in Klingon society) Similarly moe started being treated all most god like toward his people, Destroying a newspaper containing his image could result in your death, people began to compose song about his greatness similar to the song composted by religions about the god or gods they worship, his "little red book was as revered as any religions scripture. Atempting to deface or destroy it was as bad as trying to destroy a copy of the Quran in ISIS. Know moe was an insane egomaniac Kahless is none of these things, none the less his people to hold his words and stories of his life with the same reverence and uncompromising obedience that other societies would hold a religious text. Again This is not a criticism of Klingon society just an observation, Also take note that I have seen star trek Voyager the new generation movies, and reboots, and the early season of next generation. I am not as well versed in Klingon as the Borg so, this is just the impression I get from what I have seen of the star trek universe so far. So if I got something wrong sorry
