By 2006, when this film was released on DVD and VHS, the former medium had been "the de facto format" for like six or seven years. In fact, at that time the first movies were already coming out on blu-ray. Only a few freaks in South Dakota were still using VHS back in 2006.

The look on his face when he's caught fiddling with the keys is priceless. He was really hoping that it would be his henchman in the doorway, but he took a gamble on that and lost hard. My favorite part about this movie is how Cronenberg choreographed these fight scenes to gradually incorporate elements of action movies that are completely dissonant within the drama genre that he’s working with. We suspend our disbelief during fight scenes in most movies because we know the excessive and unrealistic violence is meant to entertain us. But in this film the characters react to Tom/Joey’s stylized moves with the same incredulity that you would have if you saw somebody killing somebody like that in real life; it would just be absurd or plain terrifying.
@spongeaang98

This movie's violence was so viscerally disturbing for that reason. The sounds of bones breaking, blood splattering, and depiction of gore was so horrific that it truly shocks you in a way most other action films couldn't.

I saw this in the theater when it opened. During this whole scene, Richie's' menacing, weird face I could tell was really getting to everyone around me. He was just so evil. Hurt's face just filled the screen when he was yelling at Joey: "You COST ME! A HELLUVA LOT, JOEY! A HELL of a LOT!" It was really gripping.....then when Joey runs out and Richie stands over his guy yelling "HOW do you FUCK that UP?"....some guy near me hollered "HOW did you MISS??" One of those rare moments in a theater when everyone was just riveted. Joey then blew his brother's brains out and everyone around me was like "Holy Shit" and "Jesus" and women were gasping. What I love about this whole part of the film when Joey/Tom goes back to Philadelphia. In the hands of anyone but a genius director like David Cronenberg, that William Hurt's Richie would be presented as a big badass older brother who is the final guy for Joey/Tom to put to bed the Joey side of his life for good. But instead of been a bad ass scene, Richie and his stooges are presented like dumbasses not equipped for a guy like Joey. Richie probably blames Joey and whole thing with taking out Ed Harris's Carl gang and taking his eye for not moving up Irish mob ranks but in reality even if that didn't go down either Joey would have become boss or Richie would have still been where he was in life at that moment. Also how sadly pathetic it is when Richie is messing out in his trouser pocket looking for the keys to open the door and dies the way he does. William Hurt deserved his Oscar nod for his performance.

Nah. Ed is amazing, but his role here wasn't Oscar nomination worthy. I think if there was a scene where he tells Joey that he wasn't mad for losing his eye, and try to take out one of his teeth and say something like "I guess we'll just have to settle for one of your teeth instead" he could've got a nomination for it. Hurt's performance seemed like genuine disgust and distrust of Mortensen's character - is if he was already disappointed enough with both his men (for their incompetence) and his brother betraying him and leaving just like that - as if he had experienced something like that in real life. The last part was like a catharsis - shoot me or not, I have no idea what to do anymore. Superb!

It is but it has other differences too like the town he fled being New York and the gangsters being Italian. Carl took Tom's finger when he lost his eye. Ritchie, who is Tom's childhood friend, pulled off a heist and assasination of a mob boss with Tom. Ritchie got caught and fingered Tom which is why he fled. When he returns to New York he finds out that the gangster he killed had a son who has Ritchie. Ritchie was kept alive in a harness and had been tortured for years. He had lost his nose and limbs at this point. The son captured Tom and was going to subject him to the same torture starting with a chainsaw. However Tom deflect the blow and managed to trip him causing the chainsaw to fall on him. Tom then euthanized Ritchie at his request.

The ending of the Graphic Novel (drawn by the awesome Vince Locke and highly recommended ) was far more interesting and impactful. Cronenberg had moved away from his body horror origins (although the special effects are pretty solid) and i understand why he choose to change it up. The film is entertaining enough with a great cast and good pacing.
