"A holiday is when we hit a tank": how Ukrainian military celebrate New Year's / hromadske

In a few hours it will be New Year's Eve. Commanders Ekoloh ("Ecologist") and Molodiy ("The Young One") pack sweets and gifts for their subordinates. This is the only attribute that here, in the dugouts two kilometers from the Russian positions, indicates that it's the Christmas holidays. But their daily military routine goes on. UAV pilots from the Svoboda National Guard battalion attach a projectile to the drone, and it flies to Russian positions.
"A holiday is when we throw a grenade and a dude gets torn apart. A holiday is when we hit a tank or a "motoliga". But otherwise it doesn't feel like that," answers the chief sergeant of the strike drone company "Molody" to the question of whether they feel the holidays here the front line.
Meanwhile, the Russians begin to "congratulate" our soldiers ahead of time: at 11:00 p.m., the person on duty on the walkie-talkie warns of the arrival of "Grad" and phosphorus.
"Relatives are at home, we are here. There is nothing to be happy about - only about the target that we hit," sighs the "Dutchman", whose wife and little son are waiting for him at home. And for the next new year, he dreams of only one thing - to be a good and reliable father.
For the civilians, military wish "not to lose heart, to believe in victory, and make efforts for it."
"And be ready to join the army, because the need for it does not disappear. Not everyone understood it at the same time, but everyone needs to prepare", says Ekoloh, deputy commander of the strike drone company. "For good to win, all good people must gather and defeat all evil. We are exactly these people."
