i always quenching in motor oil was bad. even if it's fresh, there's still lots of crap they put in it.
@GaisaSanktejo
@GaisaSanktejo Ай бұрын
Motor oil and transmission fluid are two of the common substances used to quench blades and such, but you are correct about their giving off nasty fumes, which is why they should be used in a well ventilated area. I did a little digging about *oils* used for quenching and learned the following are commonly used to quench blades and such, but since they only listed what they were, I added what extra I knew: Motor oil, new or used. (toxic fumes, use in a ventilatred area) Transmission fluid (ATF), new or used. (toxic fumes, use in a ventilatred area) Canola oil. (from what I found, this one doesn't work so well, not sure why) Peanut oil. Other vegetable oils like avocado, etc. Mineral oil. Commercial quenching oils like Parks 50 or Chevron 70. Mixes of any of the above.
@MadeInMichigan
@MadeInMichigan Ай бұрын
@@GaisaSanktejo Yeah, I'm not sure where I heard that. Probably on one of these tubes or a forum or something. Thanks for the clarification.
@GaisaSanktejo
@GaisaSanktejo Ай бұрын
@@MadeInMichigan no problem, the "fun" issue with motor oil is how some is synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral and so on. I don't know enough about the synthetic stuff to give full facts, but I'm pretty sure all of them give off nasty fumes when vaporised (when quenching for example), be it natural oil derivatives like benzine, or detergents in the mix...
