This whole visa thing sounds quite stressful and frustrating but I'm sure everything will work out just fine. Norway is pretty awesome, you'll love it here! *virtual bellyrub for Aspen*

I found your account while researching Aussies about 5 years ago! I was in the UK at the time studying Animal Science. I decided to rehome an Aussie male, as a graduation present. Oh boy what a personality! Anyway we live in Norway (I'm Norwegian), and we're looking forward to following your new journey! Beware incoming culture shock including "dog culture".

Congratulations on the Ph.D . And getting the postdoc. I know from my own experience many years ago that getting through the Ph.D defense is a big deal and quite an accomplishment. We have had Aussies for many years and currently have three of them. I have a lot of experience introducing a new dog to the pack. It can take a few weeks before things settle down, but we have never had a longer term problem. Also, it is much more interesting and fun to have two or more dogs than one. Good luck with all of the changes. Glad to see you back on KZbin.

How often would you say you take her to the vet for teeth cleaning I have a 5 year old Aussie named aspen as well I used to watch this channel all the time when I was deciding on getting a Aussie wish you luck in your endeavors!

Aspen is 8 and has had her teeth cleaned twice. One of the visits was for an emergency when she cracked 2 teeth - the cleaning was just done since she was already under anesthesia.

Did the institution you've got your postdoc with not help out with the visa process at all? I'm really glad you've found a post-doc so soon after completing the PhD. I'm about to complete myself next year but keen to do the opposite and try and find a job opportunity in Canada! (UK PhD). I'd be really keen to land any kind of fieldwork opportunities in colder climates but all of my behavioural ecology work has taken me to Africa (Not complaning but I wish I was in your shoes sometimes! Boreal/tundra is my favourite ecosystem.). I did a bit of traveling around Scandinavia after a conference in Stockholm last summer and there are some real oddities with Norway infrastructure. I couldn't reserve seats on trains from abroad for example except by phoning them up on an international rate number. Sounds like it's not just the trains that are a bit behind the times.

I think most universities will not cover visa/travel costs for post-docs...which is unfortunate. Once you land a professor position, then it's a completely different story. If you are really interested in fieldwork in Canada, I would keep an eye out for positions with Environment & Climate Change Canada. Some of their scientists were collaborators on my PhD and they have field sites all over the Canadian Arctic.
