I have a friend that used nematodes. Tiny bugs that can be applied via a water-borne sprayer. Easy to apply and the grubs were gone within days and the lawn rebounded within a couple of weeks.

They work well but sunlight kills them fast, so you have to apply them at or after dark for best results.

Thanks for the video. I have been struggling with my St Augustine lawn for 10 years, this spring realized I have been in denial of grub worms. I have been using a professional company to fertilize and until about 10 years ago the yard looked pretty good. They never recommended any treatment. My next door neighbor recommended Triazicide. I am desperate, I have large bald spots in my yard, re-sodding annually with Bermuda or Zoysia trying anything. I put the Triazicide out just before a nice rain, the next morning I had 46 (yes, I counted them) grub worms crawling on to my drive way and dead, many more coming out of the lawn. The next day I had another 30. Over the next few days the number decreased but would still see one or two every now and then. I don’t doubt your recommendation but the Triazicide seemed to be very effective. I would not have believed it if I didn’t see it myself.

This stuff does work. I had a major infestation, 5 grubs a tiny shovel full every time I dug a hole. I ripped up big patches of grass to clear it for new seed, put this stuff down, found dozens dead the next morning. I even used it again a few weeks later and found more dead grubs popped up.

I'd like to clarify and get your opinion. It is the last day on November here in Minnesota. I know I had/have a grub problem and want to get rid of them as soon as possible this Spring as we have a wedding in our back yard next year. If I am understanding correctly, I should out down a grub killer this Spring (Trichlorfon or Carbaryl). How early can I out these down? Then, should I treat the lawn with Grub ex (Chlorantranlilprole) later in the year as well? I need to get rid of these grubs as the coon and skunks have really done a job on my lawn along with the grub damage. Wedding is in September. Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

If you put either of those active ingredients down around April 1 they will kill many adult grubs after they wake up from winter. Since you are so far north I doubt you'll get much benefit out of applying earlier than that. By mid may you can they apply grub ex for prevention of any stragglers that hatch in summer.

you are most likely spot on; that product contains carbaryl which will kill the mature grubs in earlier spring before they pupate stopping the majority of the lifecycle. I have a terrible mole problem this summer and read that to get rid of the moles I need to get rid of the grubs. At the hardware store the other day the salesperson picked up that very bag that you show does not work and told me to use it. I bought it, and came on here to see if it would be bad to kill all the insects in my lawn (which I why I have avoided using chemicals up to this point). All that to say this: it’s September in Long Island, so the weather is about to cool down. Should I order what you mentioned works and use it now? And again in the Spring? Two times per year? Or something else?
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, I stand by this video, the two products mentioned in the description will kill the grubs. You don't have to use the affiliate links either, just head to your local home and garden center and look for the correct active ingredients used in those products. Sept is a good time to get ontop of the grub problem as early as possible, you could hit it again in April if you feel you need to then go into prevention mode by may and you'll never have a grub problem again...and hopefully you will have a significantly less bad mole problem too.

How about Imidacloprid products like Merit 0.5 or Bifenthrin like Talstar xtra. Thinking specifically of cranefly larvae From looking at studies, both seem to do well. Thoughts?
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
I've never looked into cranefly larvae before so that would take me some time to feel comfortable making suggestions on...however my experience with imidacloprid (researching grub control specifically) is that it is a strong "bug pre-emergent" that kills a lot of beneficial things along with the target pest. My "not-educated-enough" thoughts on Bifenthrin is that it attacks bugs on the surface of the soil well which is the same reason why it doesn't hit grubs because they feed below the soil in the grass root zone. I don't focus a lot on bug control other than grubs so this is not a strong area for me. I tend to shy away from most insecticides but it's an area I do want to study a lot on during the off season because it is very important to many of my viewers.

Grubs usually lay eggs in June and they hatch in July. Most products that kill the grub larvae in July are safer for the environment and don't kill as many desirable bugs and kill the grub larvae better. These products need to be applied in May and June usually to work their best though and they are considered to be prevention products. Anything you apply now will have to be a chemical designed to kill adults grubs, these are harsher chemicals.

So it’s March now and I’ve never treated for grubs but I started having a grub problem last year. Should I treat for grubs and not bother with using a preventative now until fall?
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
If you started having a problem last year then the grubs are going to be eating away at your grass roots this spring causing die off so if it were me I'd probably apply a grub killer now and then a preventer in late may to early June. That would stop all issues in their tracks and then you could go back to annual or every couple year preventative treatments in late Spring for the years going forward. Trichlorfon will kill a majority of them now before they go underground to lay eggs. You can get that in Bioadvanced on Amazon and local big box stores. Here's a direct link: amzn.to/3K0cST1 preventative I use is LawnBox bt product as its a more natural control but its pricey. Cheaper options are Scott's GrubEx which you can probably find anywhere but that needs to go down in May as it takes a long while to move in the soil. Good luck!

I've used Lawnbox's Grubout for years in late June to early July as a grub preventative however that product has been discontinued I believe. I haven't purchased a replacement yet since I had some leftover Grubout from prior years that I was able to use this year but I'm starting to advise people to buy GrubGone on Amazon as a replacement since it uses the same BT ingredient and is obviously available nationwide. I gotta say this though, BT will not do anything substantial to the lawn or grubs if you apply it in the Fall, winter, or Spring. It's only properly used to kill grub larvae just after they hatch from eggs in the very early summer (late June and July). Even then the product degrades in the soil very fast, you get about 10 days per application before it stops working. Best practice is to apply multiple low doses of BT every 10 days or so spanning end of June through late July. This time of year you have to put up with grubs or decide to kill them with harsh chems. Here's an aff link to GrubGone; I'll most like be featuring it on the channel next Spring but I don't actually own it quite yet: www.amazon.com/Phyllom-BioProducts-grubGONE-Organic-Control/dp/B0CBL8NWLX/?tag=turfmechanicyt-20

Hi Brian! Fellow Brian here. I put down GrubEx in the spring, but I had severe brown spots during the summer (and still now), which I thought was just due to heat & drought. I recently started planting some shrubs (turning part of lawn into a garden bed) and I found grubs in the soil. What should I do? I’m in CT.
@TurfMechanic2 жыл бұрын
GrubEx needs to be applied pretty early to prevent grubs as it's very slowly mobile in the soil. Some people apply in late April or early May to get maximum benefit from it. If you applied in June then it probably only partially worked...regardless you probably have few grubs in the lawn than you would had otherwise. If you think the grubs are damaging things a lot then go ahead and apply something like the products mentioned in the video now otherwise wait until late April and do the GrubEx again and shoot for year over year improvement. Last thing to note is that you probably wouldn't have seen grub damage in the lawn in August, they just weren't mature enough. by end of Sept to October that's when you start noticing grub spots in the lawn. Thanks for watching Brian! Best spelling of the name btw! :D

Thanks for bringing up the full story on this one.
