My son is of the age where several of his friends are having babies. I love to make quilts for him to give as baby gifts. They are easy, and I get to use up fabric and finish quickly. I like making the bigger quilts, but sometimes the timelines for those can be discouraging. Your quilting area is so light, airy, and inviting!

I am so glad that you are doing this huge Tidy up. I am in the process of doing this myself. I have quilted for many. years and the fabric I have accumulated, along with. my other sewing and cross stitch and crafting has become a little overwhelming. I have come to the realization, that I'm not even sure what I have on my shelves. Plus I don't have room to buy something new because of lack of space. Sooo... I've decided like you to donate the fabric that I know I will never use along with ones that I have already used in quilts, and that I have a memory of. It is hard to let go, but when you are giving fabric to others it makes you smile. Thanks again for your suggestions.. The timing was perfect. Thanks again.

I too have been quilting for over 35 years and my tastes have changed over the years. I love many of the new fabrics. I started doing Karen Brown’s declutter challenge five years ago and continue to do it with every year. I gave away more fabric than I currently have. Purged all but 4 or 5 of my quilt books. I also got rid of 98 % of my patterns, all the clothing ones and most of quilting related ones. Only kept what gives me joy. I am so happy when I go into my small sewing room. Everything has a place and is neat, it is a joy to sew in there. It’s my true happy place. To be honest with you I have not missed any of the things I have passed on to newer quilters. Thanks for the tour, Pat, love your videos.

I attended my first 'trunk show' in mid-November 2024 at my local quilt shop featuring Heather Briggs of My Quilty Life and saw her lovely patterns, fabric lines, quilts made in her fabric lines--and what is coming soon this year. She is the sweetest person and very talented. I learned about her past- this beautiful pattern designer and fabric designer for Moda is a licensed building architect! WOW. She said she would be in her pink hard hat at construction sites and men would ask her 'Where is your boss?" and was shocked she was the boss! This woman who could design buildings was not treated well in a 'man's occupation." She took her talent for designing buildings and turned it into a new field--creating beautiful patterns for quilts. Her story is much more extensive, but from architect to pattern designer--to fabric designer for Moda is a huge thing. Getting a sneak peek at her new fabric line and pattern excites me for the next large project. Her fabrics are feminine, with soft colors, yet interchange from one of her lines to the next. I got to see her Flower Shop quilt. Another little tidbit about Heather, she likes to round the corners on her quilted items.

I’m in the process of doing Swedish Death Cleaning. My goal is to only have items that are meaningful to me now. I know some things that no longer bring me joy, are also things my kids would not want. So I’m sending them off to charity groups whee they might be enjoyed. I was given two quilts from my 98 year old mom. One was made by her grandmother and one by a neighbor. I captured all of the info and put that on a label. I want my kids to know that theses are the family heirloom quilts. I want less “stuff” to manage and that way my time can be spent doing the fun stuff…like sewing😊

Hi Pat. This is right up my alley. I think it’s so important to deep clean regularly and rid our home of things that aren’t being used. I had to go through my mother in laws hoard of stuff and I will not do that to my kids. Your situation is extra hard. You run a business and you are getting stuff you didn’t buy or even ask for. For me, I just have to think before I buy. Thanks for sharing your plan and thought process.

I decluttered my entire house. My sewing room was the last. O.MG. I rehomed bags and bags and bags of stuff from my sewing room. Still have way too much. But for now I feel good about what I did . I found new homes for everything. Now I have so much more room. Still will get more stuff gone, just later.

Yep! I usually declutter in my sewing room and in our home right after Christmas when cleaning up the holiday decorations around the house, and the mess created from holiday sewing in my sewing room The last 3 years I have been clearing out Christmas decorations down to my favorite things. We have gone from 10 big bins to five this year. I have been decorating methodically, setting out my most favorites, picking areas where they especially fit in the spaces around the house. There is always something I don’t want to use any longer and it goes to a charity shop or someone else. I work the same way in the sewing room. It does help to refresh every so often, doesn’t it?
@5Parkmans14 күн бұрын
I’ve done the same thing. We moved two years ago and had a serious declutter session with all my Christmas decorations. Trashed broken items I had been keeping to “fix” someday, and donated a bunch.

I just started go through some stuff and writing down projects by year I THINK I will do the project. Once everything is on the list. I will go through again and give away stuff. I know fabrics, projects that won't bring me joy at the moment will bring someone great joy. So it will either go as an unfinished project or I will sew it up and donate.

I am so pumped to get going in my sewing room. My sewing area is the “formal” living room in my 20 something year old house. It has French doors on 1 wall, huge wall of windows and book case built ins on the other wall. Plus it’s an oddly shaped room! Anyways I know where I’m starting- in all the clear shoeboxes (35 of them). I have fabric that’s so old it’s probably going to be fashionable again!! But I never look in those boxes for fabric. I’m not a “scrappy” sort of person and I’ve held onto these fabrics just in case the process hits me. It hadn’t so they are going out to donation or given away. Phew! I feel better just thinking of this project! Now to turn off the tv and get off the couch!! Reading all of the comments has given me the push I desperately needed!

Hi Pat, a day late here. I am definitely right there with you. We are the same age, I'm 2 months older, but I am wanting more space and just have too many things and too many hobbies. I have so many supplies/stash of things that I have lost interest in working on the things I loved doing as it's takes too long to get together the things I need to do it. I'm at a stage where I want that space that brings calm and peace. It's not just my hobbies, although that's a big part, but things I haven't used in so long that I need to let go of and donate them so someone else can enjoy them. We can do this! Even though I have a full time job still and my husband is disabled I'm determined to stay focused . I know it will take longer than I want but as long as I keep forging ahead with this plan I will see progress which will keep me going. 🙏 So happy to be on this journey with you and the others. ❤

Then I have my sewing room that is jammed packed.... so i have been sorting all fabric and deciding what to keep and what to give away. It is a slow process, but necessary. I asked my daughter if she wanted all of my sewing stuff whenever I pass away and she said NOPE.... I will be selling or giving it all away... So, I am trying to help the process now. Keep us going as this process is slow but steady...

I witnessed what she is still going through and I thought there is no way I am going to postpone my declutter process. You and I are close in age, no children and I would say on the same page from watching your videos. My declutter process has brought to light the fact that I don’t like clutter anymore. Seriously I'm working hard to just use fabric that I have when I want to start a new project (like Tula's 100 Days). I loved the fabric when I bought it. If I don't love it any more then I need to pass it on, or make donation quilts. Your Oh My Stars pattern makes a pretty quilt, and it's easy and a fast sew. Well, Pat, I had 14 tubs of fabric in a storage unit that’s two hours from my house because it’s more cost-effective and I don’t have room for all 14 where I live. Plus I probably have another five here just at the house. So last year I brought over all the fabric from my storage and you’re right a lot of it I would never use so I passed it on to a neighbor who’s a new quilter and my girls so they could resell it and earn some money. I still have more than I need and now that I’m in the last quarter of a century of life I need to decide what clothes do I really want to do? And what quilts and patterns can I let go of?

I am in the process of down sizing as well and am going to paint everything white or a light cream. I have a lot of dark wood and I want to brighten things up so my quilt library can shine. I will definitely be calling a junk truck to get rid of excess stuff and giving things to my kids, nieces and nephews now with their stories in tact. For example, giving my niece who collects records, my mother's 78 lp's from the 1940's. Start that purging and sorting now so anything you give to family has a living and memorable history.

I do NOT need any new fabric to complete these items, except background fabric for 2 quilts (Im waiting for a sale to buy the yardage). The project bins are full of the required fabrics and still my drawers are also full of unasigned fabrics. I know I will buy more fabric this year, however I'm determined it can only be for a planned 2026 item. We will see how I go 🤣

My sewing machine is on a custom table my husband built for me. Plus I have an eight foot longarm frame for my Grace Q’nique machine. To say it is cramped would be a huge understatement. I’m not sure I know where to start but thank you for the gentle push💕

Second post on fabric. I have been a quilter since 2019 and have collected a lot of fabric - OMG! Too much as each new line is like a dog seeing the same squirrel for the first time. Over the last 5 years, I have really honed in on my favorites and have donated a majority of it to donation centers or friends. The good stuff I plan to sell on my Etsy shop. One thing that I love is quilts with a lot white background so I buy 15 yard bolts. They are easy to store (laundry basket bin) and much cheaper by the bolt. I am now keeping my collections to fat 1/4 bundles or layer cakes with my bolts of background fabric. Hope this helps!

Inspiring! My fabric choices have changed over the years and I have cleaned out multiple times and usually do more after each project. After a move and moving my mom in ( combining 3 large sewing rooms into 2 smaller) I'm still trying to find a better arrangement. After today's discussion, I really need to do more "cleaning out" and keep "what brings me joy." Thank you Pat for the inspiration.

I enjoy seeing your plants.

I just reorganized most of my fabric by color, and it is visible, even if I have to open a door to see them. Except for my 30's fabric. I enjoy using them and like them all together sorted by color groups on a rolling rack. We have worked hard to downsize for "that day". But, I also am enjoying my larger extra sewing room space and will use it until I can't or we/I HAVE to move. The key for me is I HAVE to see most things, or I forget I have them or where I put them. I have inherited a LOT of sewing stuff, so that does need some purging: notions, scissors, etc... I do still sew garments, but need to purge and only keep the patterns that I will really use. Most of my "extra scraps" I use for charity baby quilts,...

People ask me why I keep more of the things I make (some quilts but many knitted and crocheted items). I realized that I just really enjoy, and need, the process of creating things. I like sending the finished items off to 'live out their destiny ' rather than languishing in my closet.

The endless downsizing! As with most quilters, I have more projects than I can ever finish. Your realization that you love sewing with new fabrics and fabric lines put into words what I feel, too. I guess that is why I have so many projects. New fabric collections inspire me! I will join you in your downsizing! On another note.... as you gave us the tour of your many projects, you took us thru your dining room. Your ginger plant caught me eye, especially the light above it. Is that a grow light? Would you be so kind as to provide information about it? My children gave me a Meyer lemon tree for Christmas! It needs 6 hours of direct sunlight which I do not have. Your light seems slim, not taking up much room. Perhaps it would solve my problem, too. Thank you for your daily, well... threes days a week...inspiration!

This is making me think of what I really use. Recently moved and I thought we downsized but we didn’t downsize enough. Now I’m going to do what you are doing. Thanks for your advice and suggestions. It really helped. ❤

What a great reminder of how grateful I am of the abundance of fabric … and you’re so right- time to let go of those that I usually skip over when choosing fabrics for a project…
