In case anyone is still interested, the 'photographer's' name was Albert Kahn. In fact he was a wealthy banker who commissioned others to take these photographs. His museum in Paris is well worth a visit.

Great channels of the yesteryears. Enjoyed theses rare photos of the Qing Dynasty eras. Credit to this noble man, late Albert for these collections. The Qing eras is closer to modern era and thus the availability of media equipment. Only the earlier great dynasties of the Tang, Mings..are from brushes of artists.

I saw series based on the later years of the Qing dynasty and I think some are accurate because people were suffering, the dynasty was falling, foreign invaders, etc… I would not say it is all inaccurate. CiXi was extremely hated by her people and everyone for being so selfish, cruel,etc.. It was no wonder her tomb was robbed.

Good article. The Chinese did not see themselves as culturally inferior to the Westerners no more the Romans who saw themselves as being overpowered by an inferior barbarian cultures. Progress is a western notion which at the time meant that the machine age would eventually bring about a more bountiful life and Enlightenment to all .The Manchus were a foreign dynasty in much the way as the Mongols. The thing different from all the other invasions China had suffered over years was that they could not Sinicize and absorb them into the Chinese culture.

As bad as things were, I doubt it was "the darkest moments in china's history". I would say this would qualify: Mao's policies were responsible for vast numbers of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, and his government was characterized as totalitarian.

Modern Chinese mentality in my view reflects its past: obsession with money, wealth and status - demonstrated in all these dramas. Reminds to me mentality of Russians whose past was was long lasting serfdom. There are similarities in the social values and tendency to view themselves as greatest powers. Luck of real self confidence…

There is no different with western films too where people were portrayed as beautiful, handsome. I have seen real western life photos; not much different from the photos here. The roads in the street was muddy, horse dunk was scattered everywhere. You should compare photos of the situation in the west and the east of the same era.
