Just watched this video again after a few years. I have finally purchased my first turntable and I am now in search for every single one of these records. Thanks for putting this list together. It took me a few years to finally give in and buy a turntable but, this is the video that got me thinking about it in the first place. So l, thanks again!

This is a great selection for someone first getting into jazz. I've had various jazz records in my collection since the 1960s (some Weather Report, Vince Guaraldi, Duke Ellington), but around 2003 I listened to my girlfriend's (now wife) Kind of Blue CD, which I really liked. While I had the flu, I had a feverish dream I was buying a copy of Brubeck's Time Out, which I bought shortly after. These two albums kindled my serious interest in jazz, and I started seeking out others. Within a short time, I had a few dozen CDs, including seven of the titles on your list. Later came Coltrane, Mingus, Monk, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, et al. (and now almost exclusively on vinyl). Good video for someone whetting their appetite for jazz! (It surprises me that several commenters missed the point of this video by bringing up Coltrane's A Love Supreme and other artists such as Shorter, Mingus, Parker and Hancock. Those artists are a little more challenging for music lovers who have no knowledge of jazz. It took me a while to warm up to those artists, so the selection in the video is a great start jazz newbies. Coltrane, Shorter, Monk, Mingus and Parker are gems for them to discover when they want to get further into jazz.)

I wanted to say THANK YOU! I've been a "digital" audiophile all my life. One day my wife said "...maybe we should get a turntable?" I have a Mcintosh C50, B&W CM-10 S2, Emotiva XPA Gen3 three-channel, and it was suggested that I needed to spend >$2k to get a sufficient turntable. However, I didn't own a single album :( So I bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (DC) just to dip our toes into analog. I found this video and I have to say that we have purchased many of your top-10 and they are perfect for why we embraced analog. Thanks for taking the time to share your passion -- your enthusiasm is inspiring. Cheers from Philadelphia, USA (Go Eagles) !

Around the time that you uploaded this video, I had heard a jazz album and was curious about learning a little bit about jazz so I search for jazz albums for beginners or something to that effect. Your video was the first one that I remember watching,, so I streamed just about all of those albums, and really enjoyed the music, so much so that right now I own nearly 300 jazz LPs- most all of them are from the 50s and 60s with a couple of exceptions. I really love that era. And by watching your video and streaming all of these, I learned that I cannot stand guitar jazz L O L, (or any jazz that has the Hammond B3 organ). I have discovered so many albums over the past few years, but it all started with recommendations you suggested. At the beginning I didn’t even have a stereo, so I was streaming music on my phone and listening with head phones…. a few months later, I bought a pretty good stereo and a turntable, and started buying the albums. I’m so glad I did because it’s been really fun and I am enjoying vinyl again like I did in the late 60s and 70s.

Just getting into jazz slowly. Got re-issues of "Kind of Blue" and "Getz/Gilberto" on Columbia and Verve respectively, which I love. I have just sold my dull-sounding orange vinyl "Time Out" re-issue (on the DOL label) and ordered a Columbia version. I think my next purchase is going to be "Blue Train" on Blue Note. I listen to albums on Spotify for discovery purposes then buy the LPs! I look forward to trying out the suggested albums in this video and in the comments.

Audiophile Laws: I know that you may be somewhat new to jazz, but there are some fabulous records that were made before the 1950's an 1960's. You haven't heard jazz until you've heard Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Charlie Parker, etc. There are too many to list here. There are many swing bands that are outstanding. Don't sell yourself short. The '50's and '60's small group jazz musicians would not have been possible without these great jazz artists. If you want to be blown away, start out with Armstrong's version of West End Blues and then listen to Art Tatum's version of Tiger Rag.

Thank you for a great list. I started exploring and appreciating jazz a few years ago. I wish I had started when I was younger. I enjoy watching album recommendation lists. Even with beginner lists I sometimes find artists I hadn't listened to yet. The '50s and '60s were great decades. But don't overlook earlier recordings. I recently acquired the Columbia Masterworks 1950 release of the Benny Goodman 1938 famous Carnegie Hall jazz concert. Even with the surface noise from the original acetate masters it's amazing.

Hello, New to your channel, but I agree the '50s and 60"s is my sweet spot for Jazz Hard bop is my preferred genre inside Jazz I just picked up RSD Bill Evans Top of the Gate fantastic album Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original tapes. If you are looking to dip your toe into the Jazz genre Original can be quite expensive but Blue Note is putting out some reissues that quite good it is the Tone Poet series very nice gatefolds and a lot of the albums are from Original tapes beautiful pictures for not more then 25.00 or 30.00 BlueNote also has BlueNote80 but the jackets are not as good as the Tone Poet series but they are cheaper in price Amazon has quite a selection of the Tone Poet or BlueNote80 series. PS.. All the albums that AudiophileLaws showed you can pick up on Amazon on either the TP or BN80 series. Thanks

good job. not shocked by the inclusion of Pink Panther as a gateway. I recall being turned on by Mancini's TV work on Peter Gunn and the lesser known Mr. Lucky. I also got into the great soundtracks from M Squad - by other jazz notables, like Benny Carter. we're talking about the early 60's.
