I cried when the woman spoke about losing her husband. She spoke so highly of him she must have loved him so deeply and I can’t imagine losing my husband like that. Totally understandable. However, THERE ARE OTHER SAFEHAVENS than the US and Canada. Uruguay. Chile. Europe. Certain parts of the Caribbean. I think that seeing the US as some kind of a promised land is a mistake. I understand that for Haitians and Venezuelans and Salvadorans whose lives are in imminent danger and who don't have access to information, simply steering towards the US is the default solution. But some of them should know better and try other options.

My parents work in a refugee center for newly arrived immigrants. The vast majority are Venezuelans (like us ) and most are very poor. The sad thing is that everyone tries to take a plane to skip the darien gap but the those that are poorer have to traverse it by foot when immigrating. My parents tell me some pretty horrible stories of what the refugees endured while migrating and most of the action usually takes place in the darién gap or by the mexico-US border. Hearing those stories regularly make me be more grateful that we had the privilege to fly a plane to the us and didn't have to see as many hardships

This is so heartbraking. The sheer inhumanity and exploitation. A few organisaztions trting to help, but this is just a drop of water on a scorching stone. And worst of all the children who are ruthlessly exposed to abuse, sexual violence or even worse. The issues in venezuela are way before the sanctions. Removing them will not really change things much I can atest.

If the sanctions weren't effective they wouldn't exist. Things were bad in Venezuela before the sanctions yes. Things were bad in Ireland and Greece in 2008 and in Argentina in 2002. Imagine if during the peak of those crisis in those countries suddenly the major/only export of that nation, the export it used to earn hard currency used to purchase imports, was sanctioned and thus cut off from the global market. It would lock the economic disaster in forever. Venezuela cannot economically recover under sanctions, that's literally the purpose of the sanctions.

Its better that people in those countires are agressive towards the US and starving, than agressive and fat and assertive. They would blindly support their leaders, like e. G. Chinese do.
