Momo is a type of dumpling that is believed to have originated in Tibet or Nepal, and it is a popular dish in the Himalayan region of Asia. Momo consists of a filling, often made with ingredients like ground meat, vegetables, or cheese, wrapped in a thin dough wrapper. Momo gained popularity in India, particularly in the northern and northeastern regions, due to cultural and culinary influences from Nepal and Tibet. In India, momo is commonly served with various types of sauces and has become a popular street food item and restaurant dish. While India has its own variations of momo, the dish itself did not originate in India.

Is Momo NOT Momos. In Nepal bhasha (Newari) , we used to call "mojamoja mari" before 1980's, which later called momo. And Bahuns and other self acclaimed higher caste people wouldn't even eat them because most of the momo were made with buff meat.

@@arig220 mostly you are not native to Kathmandu and do not know people before 90s, bhatti was Newars, when Newars could earn by just renting space they stopped and other ethnic minority opened up bhattis, Tibetans joined lot later and provided momo not in Traditional Tibetan dumpling style but copied Newari achar and filling suitable to to Ktm people. You have been reading online text written by non Newari people, and Newars as a people they dont' seem to advocate themselves so their stories are not know, and in general Nepaliese youth are quite ignoratnt about their own culture and history. So focused on west, unless you come out of the valley and the country and see it back you see the picture more clearly of how culture moved when you lived in multi ethinic culture and you better peice together what moved what.. Culturally, Newars taught Tibetans a lot, not only food and spice but the whole way of life Buddhism, all Tibeetatn budhism were translated from Newari lip to tibetan, still ranjana lipi is found everywhere in tibet and mongols as Tibet introduced buddhism to Mongols there is lot there to learn timeline of 90s is very laugable to compare history of momo in Nepal goes centuries. in Nepali its not written momo its written ma:ma: because the word itself originates from Newari word man or manu which means to steam and eat.. there are other steamed disges in Newari that are call Man choweyal steamed choyela barbecued meat steamed and mixed with newari barbecue sauce. I'll proably take some time to write this all sort of misguided narrative going on internet and no Newars are speaking up.

If it was Nepalese than Indian should have known momos hundreds of years ago as there was constant trade, travel and pilgrimage between India and Nepal. But Laughing is purely Chinese as first wave of Tibetan never tasted or knew about it. It was brought to India in 1980s in India when there was liberalization of China after the death of Mao and many Tibetans coming to India and Nepal.

There is lots of food in nepal that indians don't know about or heard about. Momo started getting popular in india recently as some nepalise thought of opening their own business in indian rather than only becoming GURKHA OR synonymous is gate keeper. momo used to be the unofficial national dish but it did take a time to be this popular until social media became accessible, you did get momo in Indian from Nepalese seller or from Nepali who were also indians like from Darjeleen places and Nepalese who migrated it was just not as popular, Nepalese popularised momo in Nepal commercially, culturarly it was prevalant in Newari culture for centuries and later Newari eateries in medival times. Achar as you eat it and filling as you know is as a momo now is not a Tibetan dumpling. its not even Momo its ma:ma: Bhote as we call the ethnic group in general living in mountaneous culture have the strong accent of rounding speech.. and when they started opening eateris in Kathmandu they wrote ma:ma: but they were not literate but spoke with their accent when they wrote it for tourist it became momo

Typical nonsensical reporting from the Indian media. Despite the numerous names for dumplings, you’re calling it “momo” so obviously it came to India from Nepal. And the little history that she gives is sorta true in that Nepali traders who travelled to Tibet brought momo to Nepal from Tibet.

Have you ever had a traditional Tibetan momo? It's worth trying to appreciate the distinctions. Traditional Tibetan momo differs significantly from Nepalese momo. Tibetan momo is known for its thicker dough and relatively simple seasoning, typically limited to salt, as compared to the Nepalese variation, which often incorporates a wider array of spices and flavors. The diversity in momo preparations across the Himalayan region is a testament to the rich culinary tapestry of this area.

Momo is tibetan in origin and Dolma Aunty(tibetan lady) from Central Market along with her nepali workers are responsible for the popularity of momo in Delhi and ncr region. Momo in tibetan families is very simple but it's something eaten during special occasions. Its crazy how bbc news is this lacking in information. If yall gonna make a video about momo. Yall have to do more research. It dont work just by saying maybe this maybe that. Yes Chinese are the creator of dumpling but they call it dimsum. The tibetan made a variation of that dumpling and called it momo. Like Japanese has gyoza and mongolian has their own name. So no, momo is not a general term to be used like dumplings, so if you just say momo, it's from tibet. Also i see couple of comments from nepali regarding them saying a princes went to tibet in 14 or 15 century. I suggest yall learn your history better. The princess who went to tibet was in the 7th century. This false information of the timeline being 14 century was when an article came out saying momo has been in nepal since 14 century, and to back that up, they started saying the princess took it to tibet. History dont change just cause it suits you. The pricess was sent to marry King songtsen in the 7th century. Momo origin might not be written in stones, but we have common sens and logic. China made dumplings. Tibet bordered china they go back and forth with trades. Tibetan people made a variation of dumplings and called it momo, which was first a food for festival and celebration, not street food. The newari trades so-called newa lhasa trade. Goes back and forth trading in lhasa and tibet due to the mutual relationship. No history of them going as far as china. When they returned to kathmandu, they brought the momo with them and started using their own syle but still kept the name, momo. Hence, nepali momo is just a variation of tibetan momo. So if nepal wants to claim momo they should start naming it something els Another example. Tibetan food has 2 other dishes similar to momo. Named tingmomo and locomomo. Every tribe that's been eating momo be it in india or nepal. Its mostly in the tibetan culture influences caste. Like sherpa,tamang, and so on in india, lhadak, sikkim, and so on. Use ur sense and logic. it's easy to know where momo is from.
@alekkazuki3874
@alekkazuki3874 3 ай бұрын
In the same way Tibetans couldn't claim Biaozi/wanton as their own because it is Chinese, Mandu-guk as their own because it is Korean and Gyoza as their own because it is Japanese. In this line, it sounds off if Nepalese claim something that is not originally in their lnguage as theirs. So te question arises, what does Momo means in Newari/Nepali languages and what does Mosang means?
@Hithere-qj1wj
@Hithere-qj1wj 3 ай бұрын
Its like saying Indian cant claim Samosas as it has Persian origin. Tibetians cant claim Laphing as it is direct copy of Liangpi. - Even though Momo as a food has its origin in Tibet, but what we call momo in Nepal and South Asia now is totally different. Its like Italians claiming Chicago-styled Pizza from US.
