I appreciate the kind comments about the Zelda CD-i remasters. What started as a joke project became a personal effort to make the games somewhat fun, because the original design is, like you mentioned, really not that bad. Still dumb, as you said, and I made sure to keep the games as close to the originals as possible...while also not doing that! A very interesting and challenging project. I'm working a spiritual successor project right now that I hope will continue their legacy...in a good way. Thanks for playing!

Anyone curious about what a finished version with a decent ROM size would look like, should check out Ms. Pac-Man on the same platform. And if you're curious what the 2600 could really do, there's a homebrew called Pac-Man 8k that shows off just how underused the system was....but in fairness, it was only designed to play Combat and Pong. Anything else requires racing the electron beam of a CRT television at over 14, 000mph, and exploiting the inability of the console to remember what it's already drawn.... If you can mentally track all the sprites, one scanline at a time? You can make a 2600 game.

I hear that Sonic Boom wasn't even meant for the Wii U, that Sega decided to be limped dicked cowards regarding that three game deal they made with Nintendo _(which included Colors and Lost World)._ And instead of actually making a damn third game for Nintendo like they promised, they pussed out and took an already in development game that was meant for PS4 hardware and forced it into the game it became. Certainly explains a lot....
@sebastianescalante56182 жыл бұрын
The developers weren't told what console they were releasing it on, and hoped for a multiplatform release. However, when they were told it was a Wii U game, it created a HUGE issue, as the engine they were using (Cry Engine) was NOT compatible with the Wii U at all!.

@Grima the Fell Dragon The game does not have to hint or suggest that you can change the controls! Theres a settings menu. That's what it's there for! If you are a reviewer and complain about a game having bad controls but failed to even check if you could change them, thats YOUR problem. The game doesn't have to make a pop up for every feature and setting that someone could complain about just so that you know you can change it. Games don't have to tell you that you can rebind keys or change the resolution. It's your job as the player to actually check if what your complaining about is even actually even a problem at all.
@BewbsOP2 жыл бұрын
@Grima the Fell Dragon wtf are you talking about? "I just looked up the game and you can't turn off motion controls" is literally a lie. You literally can! Good vid though I wanna correct you about something regarding Miyamoto: while it's true he had influence over the decisions made in Sticker Star, the mandates he placed weren't as severe as the final game would make you think, and that the team just took his word to heart, and they've done nothing to improve that issue since then. Also Yuji Naka, while definitely not entirely to blame regarding Balan's quality, still has a lot of that grandfathering issues that have plagued his work. Like you can't tell me the one button problem was placed there because Square executives thought it was good like c'mon.
@gameman2502 жыл бұрын
I think the one button thing was there because it worked for Sonic once upon a time, but as games grew more and more complex you really can't ride that strategy anymore. Plus, if Naka did this (and I want to say it was Naka and not a Square mandate) to make the game as accessible to as many people as possible, including the youngest of audiences.... methinks he doesn't have confidence in his audience to understand using more than one button for multiple actions. Freaking Super Mario Bros worked fine on two buttons, Kirby worked fine on two buttons. Maybe Naka should've played a few Kirby games before trying to apply his multi-power idea into the game.
@costby11052 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if Naka was the center of some issue during development. You don't get so many staff members recommending your removal with becoming a severe enough liability that you removal is preferable to the public backlash. Again Naka has a history of not being a team player as both Sonic Extreme and Geist Force show. Few people who have worked with Naka have had nice things to say about him.
@straightupanarg62262 жыл бұрын
The one button idea worked for Sonic because Sonic could do literally one thing, jump, and the entire game was based around that. In Balan, only one button was used, but what that did depended on what suit you were wearing and (in a platformer) that action was often not jump. I think Sonic proves that, if the costume idea had been scrapped, the "one button" was mapped exclusively to jump, and the game's platforming action was focused on interesting platforming challenges, it could have worked. Balan should have been the main character, he had plenty of style. In short, if your game uses only one button, that button must be mapped to a single action, and that action should either be jump or shoot.

Ok, I am by NO means defending Bubsy 3D. That game deserves all of the hatred it gets. However, the developers never could expect Crash Bandicoot 1 and Mario 64 to release around the same time as it. The developers actually hated the franchise from when he was first conceptualized. They were likely banking on doing something completely original and never before seen, all the while, hoping people would go nuts until future 3D platformers would release and improve on literally everything. Fuck that game.

You are mostly correcty the story goes that the Accolade developers were showing off their game to E3/CED, and were 'jackshift" when they say the demostration of Mario 64. So they already knew that Bubsy 3d was going to look bad in comparsion, but not just awful as it turn out to be. It really sad, because the most 2d deaigners of tue game, made a entire 3d engine out of sratch, and spend a fair number if a better "version" of a bubsy game.

@adamgr69882 жыл бұрын
The developers could have had a better time of it if they didn't inexplicably use the "high resolution" PS1 mode for Bubsy 3D. If you've ever seen footage of it and wondered why it looks oddly "crisp" all things considered, this is why. Apparently they thought they could make a unique selling point out of "one of the highest resolution games on PS1!". That resolution was never really intended for the kind of use cases that Busby 3D is, and the decision radically limited the amount of memory they had available and surely added a ton of headaches that weren't necessary, and not just for the visuals either.

@@adamgr6988 I never realized how sharp the game looked before, but now I can't remember a time I saw the game at a low resolution. I don't think I even remember seeing any instance of the patented Ps1 texture warp in the game either. Now you see, what you did wrong in Zelda's Adventure was using the Jade Ring to fight Llort (the first boss). The ring does almost zero damage to him. Yes, the same ring you get in the same dungeon Llort is in from a talking mimic. You literally have to hit him like 50 tines with the default wand to kill him. The rest of the game is very much like this.

53:55 I'm pretty sure the stage you're thinking of is The Doom. It's the fourth stage of the semi-dark path, and if so, the reason you couldn't find all of the enemies is because not all of them spawned due to a glitch. No, I'm not kidding, this is a real issue that is apparently very likely to happen, and to fix it, you have to use the checkpoints to warp to a different part of the stage and back, which makes the game spawn the missing enemy in.
@gameman2502 жыл бұрын
Either that or Lost Impact. Same setting, same basic hunt down the things you need to destroy in a confusing maze of a level.
@TheMGMfan2 жыл бұрын
@@gameman250 That's also possible, but I feel like The Doom is more likely to be the stage because it's very likely that you literally can't find the last enemies without warping between areas to make them spawn. Both are very likely, however.

Only on the ps2 port- Xbox and GameCube don't have this, the game gives you more than the 60 needed to complete the stage it's actually pretty short only around 5 minutes for me as it's a straight line just occasionally going up floors Same with lost impact, a 7 minute stage that is a straight line only requiring to go up floors and into one off set room It's a space station after all the level design is pretty good and there's maps to not get lost, it's a nice touch

Core-A Gaming did a video on Shaq-fu Your guessing game isn't too far off. It was made by the same guys that made Prince of Persia. It's why it has the motion capture animations which is actually pleasant to look at. But the lack of a buffering system is the problem. If you don't know what that means, you have to wait until the animation is finished for an input to go through. This is why motion inputs are basically imposible.

I can't find any reference that the Shag Fu guys had anything to do with Prince of Persia, as that was made by Jordan Mechner, who rotoscoped his brother for the animations. Even back then with my way less critical mind I realized it had some kind of identity crisis between the "gotta go fast" gameplay and more combat oriented action adventure exploration and lack of commitment to either made both worse but overall at no point I thought I was playing a bad game.

It’s always interesting when you actually check out a title with a bad reputation. Sometimes you can actually find something you’d might enjoy. Don’t get me wrong you can also save yourself time by listening to the warnings! I think the main thing here is, if you really want to understand what makes a good game, you need to try out the spectrum I held once, and attempted to play, Action-52 … when you collect you come across these things. You hold this thing in your hands that spawned many nightmares of the curious reviewers. I even remember a late night infomercial selling this thing. It was about 25 minutes and I always wondered why they never showed game play. Well years later and several epic reviewers take I had this legend in my hand. I played it and actually made attempt to play each game, as the trial mandates … and it’s not worth even the asking price. Not then, not now! Look I understand some titles are expensive because people will pay for it so they can have that complete collection … but this is not worth it. It sucks even compared to other bootleg multi carts. And no the limitations didn’t matter because the Genesis version wasn’t much better But I think I ranted enough. Great video man! Didn’t expect such a long one, but was awesome to see. Maybe play something good? You need a palette cleanser lol

Random tangent since Wisdom Tree was shown in the video: I heard a story about them once that I don't know if it's true or not. But Wisdom Tree was formerly known as Color Dreams, making plain ol' unlicensed NES games. Apparently to cover their asses against legal action from Nintendo they changed their name and rebranded themselves as a Christian-based video game company, logic being that the big N wouldn't dare pick a fight with a Christian group, there'd be scandals!
@juststatedtheobvious96332 жыл бұрын
It's all very true. But to their credit, Spiritual Warfare is a pretty decent Zelda clone if you go in with lowered expectations. And Super Noah's Ark is just straight up good for a 16-bit FPS, since it's a Wolfenstein clone. Id was pissed at Nintendo's censorship, and the rest is history.

The kicker is that Wisdom Tree is still around. Now, I don't know if they have plans to rerelease their Color Dreams stock, but last I heard, they plan on doing that with their NES games. Maybe they'll be touched up to make them less janky?

A great collection of garbage, but focused A) on Western Games and B) on Console Games, which leaves out some absolute stinkers worse even than most of those on this list. Two particular RPGs I (do not) recommend: Megatraveler 1: The Zhodani Conspiracy, 1990, by Paragon Software, released for the Amiga, Atari ST, and MS-DOS. Based on the Traveler tabletop RPG which was popular at the time. The game has better narration and story of most RPGs of the time, but that's about it. The way character creation works, you can spend hours making characters, simulating out their military career accumulating skills, levelups, stats, and money, and deciding when to retire so they can start the adventure; but don't leave them in the military for too long, because eventually they'll get old and their stats will actually start to drop. To get the most out of them, you have to find a 'sweet spot' where your old men are in top form but before they start to show their age, and then retire. And then, after all your hard work, you enter the game, get attacked immediately after the introductory story, and will see your party killed off immediately. You're actually intended to run from this fight anyway, so maybe after 3 or so attempts end in death you try to get your characters to run away and maybe you'll even figure out how to make it to the port, but 9 times out of 10 you'll die before you get away anyway. Turns out the game runs on the Traveler RPG mechanics but in real time, and unlike Bioware's Baldur's Gate they didn't do a good job of fairly implementing this, as the AI is capable of giving orders to all units simultaneously and there's no way to pause battle to issue orders as you cycle through them. You could always use the default characters available instead of making your own so you can skip the hours grind of character building, but they tend to suck so bad you have no chance. If you manage to persevere long enough to escape this first death trap and take your ship out to space, you have to deal with the badly-implementing navigation gameplay that attempts to simulate real space physics, including gravitational fields and inertial, to hilariously bad results. I attempted (many times) as a kid to play this on my Atari ST and could never get anywhere. Since Speedrunning, even of horrible games, has led to even the cream of the crap like these to get people beating the games consistently and publishing their efforts, I thought I might try my hand at this game and see if I could develop a speedrun for it...but amazingly, I could not find any documentation anywhere of someone who even had a barebones walkthrough or anything close, so if I were to try to beat this game for speedrunning I'd have to do all the terrible work myself, and I haven't yet managed the gumption. Hoshi Wo Miru Hito (People Who Watch Stars, or 'Stargazers') is a Famicom game developed by Another and published by HOT B in Japan in 1987, and was so bad that it (naturally) never got a Western port, so you have to play it in the original Japanese--which is pretty much impossible even if you speak Japanese. It's not real-time, but the combat is comparable to Megatraveler in difficulty, there's no way to run away until you get a spell at (relatively) high level, and in the early game there's only one healing point--an NPC in the first town, which is actually invisible on the world map. You start on the world map, and not in this town, so you literally only find the town and the ability to heal if you wander into every square, and there is no intro to the game that explains anything about anything to you, so welcome to the blind start. There is so much wrong with the game that it would take ages to explain, but people actually speedrun this game--sort of. The main way they can is by using the terrible programming to use a second controller to move the map around the character instead of vice versa and other such shenanigans. The 'save game' feature is a password with both Japanese characters and English character possibilities, 25 total needed to be entered with over 50 possible characters to scroll through on each one as you enter (it even includes such Western characters as the copyright symbol!). After all is said and done, the speedruns technically aren't even real because there's no proper ending to the game, the final boss wasn't even programmed in. It has a sprite, but the battle doesn't have any data, you just lose, and there's text in the coding for if you beat if, but it was never implemented. Dowolf has speedrun this abomination for both RPG Limit Break and Awesome Games Done Quick, and watching him do it is one of the funniest experiences you will ever see.

PC is very much the de facto version to play (it goes for very cheap every other day, right now even!), even if you have trouble running it you can downscale the graphics to the max, performance is critical for this type of game and the visuals aren't that great even on high Regardless of that, the ice stage however suffers from a one big massive stutter midway through (around the area with slippery floors since it's trying to have real-time reflections) and then it just continues to run normally

The issue I have with the shadow segment is that nothing was said "it's kinda sorta fun" like okay what do you mean? Thankfully he made a game using what he learned from making these remakes called Arzette The Jewel of Faramore. It released on all platforms on Valentine’s Day and is only $20. It’s a loving homage to the what was good about the Zelda CDi titles except with an original IP. It’s published by limited run games with the developers calling themselves Seedy Eye Games (clever). On limited run games till the 17th of March there is preorders for a regular physical copy and a collectors edition with retro CD case for the game and other goodies. You can also pay extra to get a CDi style DVD remote controller like the good old days of never-it’s pink and looks exactly like a CDi controller. Legit take a look for anyone wanting to know.
