#11, wants to resolve up to the 5 as it does in most examples here. IV7#11 fits in perfectly in melodic minor, and II-V7#11 tends to use the melodic minor of the II. True b5s are pretty rare, and don't fit into most keys, but one can use them in minor. Note the 3 and b5 of the dominant both want to resolve inward by half steps to the root of the tonic chord. Crunchy.

This is very very true, I tend to think of 7#11’s as having the 13 in them and 7b5’s as having just the 3rd b5th and 7th in them but they’re both really similar so I guess it’s whatever floats your boat kinda 😂

It's so characteristic that I recognized it immediately. My favorite song using it is definitely Duke Ellington's Take The A Train.

I think it's also important to mention the movement that the chord implies. The b5 wants to move up to the 5, and that's what happens in most of the examples you showed. It seems like bill evans really liked to move the 5 of dominant chords around in that way, I know that he would also go from #5 to 6
@elliotkozary
@elliotkozary 8 ай бұрын
That’s very true, bill Evan’s is fantastic at inner voice leading and this chord definitely opens itself to nice voice movement

that chord progression was beautiful/satisfying!!! i have a limited knowledge of jazz music but I'm very familiar with a few artists and styles. Esperanza Spalding likes to combine Latin American jazz styles and bossa grooves in her music. But her songs "Precious" and maybe "I Know You Know" (??) use the dom7b5 chord. You should check her music out if you haven't tho!

Esperanza Spaulding is AMAZING! I’ll listen back to precious and I know you to find the chord. Thanks for listing them!

@@elliotkozary she is!!! I'm gonna go down a esperanza rabbit hole again now 😂 I'm trying figure out "IKYK" (i VAGUELY remember the bassline) and I'm sure the chord progression is: A7 (b5), D7 b5, Gm7 ( Gm11 9b??), and back to D7b5 for the intro at least. I struggle with hearing altered chords by ear so I could be a little off!

It’s true, you can think of it as a #11 but it depends on the context I guess
