My grandfather’s family was farmers in Latvia, which was occupied by Soviet Union, had big farm (they were called kulaks) and the whole family was deported to Siberia in 1949, just because they were successful. My grandfather was 12. After Stalins death, they could return in Latvia, what they did. In their house were living other people, their land was taken away by government. They managed to get back the house, but the land was gave back just when Soviet Union collapsed and Latvia once again become independent country in 1991. May great grandmother was so afraid, that they will be deported again, she never spoken about Siberia. This destroyed her.

Both my grandma and grandpa witnessed when they were kids how soldiers came and took their fathers away for “treason”. Both their fathers died in the gulags shortly after, and my grandfather dedicated his life to clear his father’s name and waited for the government to officially apologize for the monstrous crime Stalin did to his dad. The day my grandfather received the official letter of apology and clearance of his father’s name was probably the happiest I had seen him. Until today, people focus on Stalin as a hero who saved Europe from the Nazis, but it was easy for him, he just used Soviet soldiers as bodies. The Soviet solder was told one thing “you run to the front, the enemy will shoot, you run back, the Red army will shoot you for being a coward”.

My grandmother was a nurse during the early 40s in Ukraine and Stalin would also force the hospitals to end babies born with any handicaps- even port wine stains. That's how much of a monster he was.

Thank you so much for telling this story and for bringing attention to the trauma of the Holodomor. I grew up in Ukraine and as late as the early 2000s, movies or shows depicting cannibalism were banned because there were still Ukrainians who lived through and remembered the Holodomor and were suffering from PTSD. And yet no one there would hesitate to invite you into their home and love you in the form of a home cooked meal. Feeding people is like a Ukrainian love language. Okay I laughed pretty hard at the saying "The only person Stalin feared was his wife" because Stalin was afraid of everyone and everything... that is the main reason he was such a cruel leader; anything that made him feel the slightest bit threatened was taken out by the KGB for him. He reportedly had people spirited away to his work camps and prisons for just startling him in passing out of fear that their story of "the time they scared Stalin" would go viral on him and make him look weak.

Growing up in Seattle, we learned all about the internment camps. My grandmother lived on Bainbridge Island where there was a large camp. I believe it was my 8th grade year that we had a required course called Pacific Northwest History. We learned a lot about Native American tribes in our area, Lewis and Clark, Japanese internment camps and all sorts of historical events that relate to Washington. I have always loved learning about history. If we don’t teach our children about our real history then we are bound to repeat it, in my opinion.

As someone from a country whose people had to live through all of Stalin's atrocities, including the deportations (more than 130 thousand people were deported, of which 70 percent were women and children), I thank you for making these videos because unfortunately, many people from other countries still think that the Soviet Union was a paradise, that only the Germans were the bad guys. The historical trauma continues in many families in my country. P.D. A comment on Part 1: Stalin was not born during the Soviet Union (it was formed in 1922), he was born during the Russian Empire (the people of my country also lived through that time when the Russians had banned the press and books in my native language, so people printed and smuggled books in my native language from another place). While we do know some things about what happens in NK, I think it would be pretty difficult to get enough accurate information for a Dakr History video - most of the information about what goes on there never makes it past their borders because of the way the country is run. We'll never know most of what happens in NK.

Hi! I would just like to suggest the tragic case that happened in Norway in 2011 in Oslo and on Utøya, also called July 22 attacks, where there was a terrorist attack in Oslo and mass shooting on the island of Utøya in Norway on July 22, 2011, in which 77 people were killed (mostly young people) all done by one person.

This was so on point and I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts. One thing I wish you mentioned (but as you said, there was SO much information that you had to cut out a lot) was the rivalry between Stalin and Trotsky. Ended very poorly for the latter, and may have been a very big reason for Stalin's eventual antisemitism.

Hey Bailey just wanna let you know that I enjoy the dark history show soo much. I thought it'd probably not be as fun as the MMM series at first but not only did it surpasses it, I've also found it to be a lot more interesting and lighthearted (the story is as dark but what I meant is the narrative) I was so engrossed, and enjoy it even more than MMM. And it make my commute to work a lot more bearable and entertaining too, thank you ☺️💖💖

I was already strongly anti-Russia in this conflict, but hearing about Holodomor made it ten times stronger I'm sure that was only the brief overview. Angry simultaneously that anyone could expect the Ukraine to go back to being a part of Russia, and at my high school level history teachers in the USA for not mentioning this part of the Soviet era.

I am Mongolian, and here I have something to add on. Stalin’s dictatorship and all the horrible malicious deeds did affect Mongolia too. It was the time that Mongolia got helping hands from Soviet Union, when we were weak. So, politically Mongolia got brotherhood relation with Soviet Union, in exchange of the Russian experts sent to Mongolia for the country prosperity, whereas Mongolians gave everything they had. The 5 years of plan made Mongolians into starvation for years, not only 5 years. Mongolians prepared Stalin’s soldiers’ food, raw materials, and even the men sent to the battlefield. Civilians devastated under this dictatorship and there were no option to not to follow the commands, or else you get executed, like a Stalin’s dictatorship franchise (lol). Many Mongolians have executed during that time. There is a book called “Green-eyed Lama” based on that particular time in Mongolia. This book has a sequel as well which published lately and revealed the history based on the interviews taken from the family members of them who poorly repressed and executed, slavered, and basically lived during that time. Because all the archives of those years have been deleted from our national archives, which of course political and eliminated that part of the history on purpose. Thank you for reading this comment. Thank you for dear Bailey Sarian for making all the contents. I watch every single video of you ❤️
