Every winter, the fjords of Northern Norway become an extraordinary place as Killer whales and Humpbacks they move into the fjords following the overwintering herring.
For many years the focus was on the relationship between herring vessels and the whales. Now our attention turns to the behaviour of the tourists.
If you look up whale watching in Northern Norway you will be met with videos full of once in a lifetime encounters and epic underwater footage.
It is all our responsibility as tourists to do due diligence before having any encounter with wildlife. Do your research. Always go with a responsible operator. Add on a day or two to increase your chances of a sighting and to take the pressure off operators.
I would recommend going with Dervola Adventures who I travelled with last year.

Great short film. This is a very tricky topic. I’ve been getting closer to the idea that everyone should have the same access right to viewing wildlife (of course in an ethical and managed way). But it really frustrated me when a particular group think they have more right to be close to wildlife than someone else. As for the killer whales, they have the ability to disappear when they want. They could hunt at night which is around 20 hours I believe. Killer whales can be very curious and may investigate groups. Last comment - surely tourism like this is better than the massive fishing boats that are also after the fish…

You cover lots of interesting points there. Re the herring vessels, the Killer whales actually follow and lap them when they’re fishing. Obviously sustainable herring fishing has been an important topic for the whole industry and for the KW & Humpbacks but that’s why they have strict quotas. From the tourism side of things, I agree. Everyone should have access. My worry is that people get the idea from seeing videos that you can rock up for just the day and get that dream encounter or shot. It puts pressures on operators and makes for some pretty sketchy behaviour. Either way, a BIG topic hey. Thanks for your input as always x
