Start planning your kitchen renovation where it matters most: the kitchen layout design. In this video I discuss the 4 most common kitchen layout designs: One wall kitchen layout, L-shaped kitchen layout, U shaped kitchen layout, and a galley kitchen layout. As well as, how to take each kitchen design one step further by incorporating an island, peninsula, or coffee bar.
Sometimes the best kitchen layout comes down to what fits best in the space. However, don't feel as though your new kitchen design needs to be the same as your old kitchen design.

In my opinion the island is way too big for the area. As someone who HATES their kitchen because of the island that really stands out to me. Our house is open concept and the island separates the kitchen and dining and makes our dining room cramped and one pass through area to dining only allows one person so we often have to go around. My dream is to get rid of the island and move the sink and dishwasher (currently in island) to the wall but that’s financially not an option. Is that kitchen actually easily functional for multiple people with that huge of an island? Will watch more videos to hopefully gain more knowledge, subscribing.

My very small kitchen is sort of in the middle of the house with an office on one side, living room and dining room on the other sides. We don’t need a formal dining table and thought we could split a large island into two halves. One in the kitchen and the other matching island in the dining area…bad idea/good idea?!? We would like the double island for more work space and under cabinetry.

Thin countertops are the hot thing currently (in Europe), is it also a trend in the US? Marble gives me more an "old rich" feeling...

I'm not a marble fan in the kitchen without major finishing techniques. Thin countertops are not all that common among my clients (under 5%). I think it comes down to size as well. It's likely easier to keep the thinner countertop structurally sound in smaller kitchens/smaller slabs. Some of the kitchens here in Canada and the US are downright monstrous and have countertop square footage to match.

My galley (dimensions 10'9"x7'9") is wide enough (barely) for a 46-inch aisle, with one door too narrow for appliances to come through, the other barely wide enough. It is defined on all sides by load-bearing or exterior walls, so any expansion of the space would be prohibitively expensive. I hope I will be able to widen the 32-inch door to 48 inches and the 26-inch door to 36, and to widen the case openings from the dining room to the living room and hall. That would make things a bit less claustrophobic, with a bit more communication to the breakfast room and the dining room, but still not as inviting as a true open plan. What are your thoughts on a herringbone vinyl plank floor in the narrow galley opening into the breakfast room space (the dining room has beautiful 90-year-old polished red oak floors). I think the lengthwise planks through the kitchen would make it look that much narrower.

I am a big believer in continous flooring to help make a space feel more cohesive with one room flowing into the next. Its hard to visualize changes in flooring material without seeing photos of a space, because at times there are natural dividing lines that can make transitions look a little more seemless.

It's possible replacing some of the upper cabinets with open shelving might make the space feel a little more open. Not everyone's cup of tea, but just a thought that could help :)

Is the base corner cabinet with shelves that is just a straight line interchangable from left to right for the door installation? I see the door on the left in my design tool, but not available in that view in the product list. Any help is much appreciated. :)

I am in the design process. I have limited space and I am thinking of desigining an island but that would leave very little space for a dining room. Question, is it ok if I just design a large island and just forgo having a dining room table? Is it ok to not have a dining room but a very cool large island?

This all depends on what you want in the space, and how you use the space. Some people are fine without a table, others aren't. I also like to think about resale value as well. If this is a place you are to sell eventually (before the kitchen renovation goes through it's lifetime), is there another place to put a dining table? Each situation, person, and home are unique.

@@hsdesignstudio thanks for the reply. It is greatly appreciated. my kitchen layout is long and narrow. I am also taking out a non-load bearing wall so I am losing cabinet space. Therefore the idea of having a 14' island seems reasonable. I guess in order to accept the idea I should not call it an island instead just call it a long kitchen table that also works as an island. Yes I am worried about resale but it's going to be a huge upgrade over my current setup that I think it makes sense. Just have to wrap my head over the concept of not having a traditional dining room.

It is a very common North American feature in kitchens. I would day 95% of kitchens we design have a window behind the sink.

@@hsdesignstudio yeah the content and organization is good, so it seems like it'd be worth investing a few hundred (or the cheap route, about a hundred) into a decent mic setup to do your content justice. the mic quality currently distracts from the content

This is such a difficult question to answer because I don’t think there is necessarily a set path. What worked for me, is likely very different from the next person. I started with my own properties and then worked for free for a while to build experience. I’ve been around building and design my whole life, watching and learning from my parents as I grew up. This grew into a blog, then this channel, and now my full design studio with clients all over the world. That isn’t to say that going to school for interior design isn’t also an option.
