Great discussion! My entry to 3D FDM was this Sovol SV06. I got in on the original early bird buy. I was up and running my first Benchy in 25 minutes. I've had outstanding results since that first print with the only issues being user error and the learning experience. My SV06 Plus is on the way (again on the early bird, $299 price), and you've just convinced me to get my hands on the Sonic Pad to rule them both. I'm using the printers in my real life job as an engineer, and have been very pleased that I've turned 4+ week deliverables for prototypes into an overnight internal process. No more tooling fees, custom plastic color fees, of expedite fees! Oh, and I added a resin printer for fine detail parts.

I just need a walk through man! I am having to decode your video and hope what you show is correct to select and give it a shot. SOVOL links this specific video on how to setup the printer but I wish it wasn't a "howdy neighbor, let me tell you about my day" kind of thing and actually had steps to follow I don't have to decode like a word problem in college stats class.

my first (and only for now) printer was/is a sovol svo6 that i got for Christmas then upgraded with the Klipper screen that sovol released (so not the creality one in the video) and i love it, it is super reliable and i have a few hundred hours on it and a few spools through it
@Liberty4Ever Жыл бұрын
That Creality Sonic Pad looks great. It seemed that the 3D printer market slowed for a year or so, but Klipper is now leading to some rapid development in the 3D printing market. I thought about buying an SV06+ and adding a Klipper pad to it but I think we're now close enough to manufacturers providing fully featured Klipper bed slingers with all the features we want - large build area, WiFi connectivity, high flow all metal 300C nozzle to print fast, improved part cooling to print fast at high quality, etc. However, the idea of a small print farm with four SV06+ printers running under one Sonic Pad is pretty sweet. I'm not interested in a 20 minute PLA Benchy. I mostly print TPU so I won't benefit much from faster printing. My interest in Klipper is input shaping for better trajectory planning to improve part quality. If that means I can get better parts at 80 mm/s than I currently get at 50 mm/s, then that's even better, but my goal is improved part quality, not speed. I also want Klipper for better control of the printer through a Fluidd browser interface. I don't even need that very nice Sonic Pad touch screen. I'm happy to interface exclusively via Fluidd on my PC. I wouldn't be surprised to see a manufacturer offer a high speed and high print quality bed slinger with headless Klipper to greatly decrease cost. Add the SSID and WiFi password to a file on a USB thumb drive to get the 3D printer on the WiFi LAN and it pops up in Fluidd, ready to go. Does your laser printer or inkjet printer have a large color touch screen so you can print documents? No. It's controlled through your PC. 3D printers should be controlled from inside our slicer programs.

It'd be a good idea to note that marlin is now capable of input shaping. Not sure about what firmware the SV06 is using but being open source it's entirely possible this feature will come to the sv06 (if sovol cares to add it)
@xontinuity Жыл бұрын
So I'm actually running Marlin 2.1.2 on my Sovol and have input shaping set up. Running at an underwhelming 120MM/s has no really noticeable ringing. The ringing test didn't result in any ringing on the X though which is confusing but I got a value for the Y axis. I'm going to crank it up to 250 MM/s soon and see what it does. I'm considering moving to Klipper but Marlin 2.1.2 might be more than good enough for this printer.

how do you actually do this step by step. there are tasks required to do that are left out of the video. I load the spinixguy config file and the 11.0 bin in the root folder of the provided usb stick, set the motherboard settings on the sonic pad, it recognizes the printer.cfg file, but then what do I do? The sonic pad says to make sure the firmware is flashed on the machine. that isn't covered in the video. I was able to get something on the sonic pad but it gives me an error message that a mainsail.cfg file is missing. I'm lost

You might wanna screw that accelerometer in next time. Double sided tape will dampen some vibrarions, especially if its foam tape. Also loose cables might mess with your input shaper quite a bit. Best way will be just designing a simple adxl holder or screwing it anywhere using existing screw, best way to secure cable will be to zip tie it to existing harness.

my 350mm voron 2.4 with a rapido hf and bozzle .5mm high flow (like cht) tungsten carbide (which is better at conducting heat) nozzle can crank out 15 minute benchies that look pretty good. cooling becomes the number 1 issue. I have plenty of motor torque and flow left in the tank, but small features like the smoke stack and the supporting structure of the ship's bridge have layer times that are way too fast to practically cool before the next layer. I am forced to artificially limit my layer time in superslicer (which is basically superslicer). Given my findings of this bottleneck, it's my understanding that the only way to improve layer times while maintaining a decent looking print would be to re-tool the toolhead for additional cooling, add external cooling, or do something like a cpap mod. HOWEVER, because I didn't build my v2 to do speed benchies (I'm using it simply as it's originally intended, as a printer benchmark to tune speed vs quality), I'm extremely happy with my build and am ok with stopping here, keeping the stealthburner as it is per the manual. I'm satisfied. re the sovol, while i'm impressed with the race to the bottom in terms of price, and further impressed by the overall engineering and feature improvements at that price point (i'm so glad they went with linear rods vs v-slot wheels for example, v-slot wheels are crap (I have a long history with an ender 3 that i've upgraded the crap out of), I can't help but be disenchanted by bed flingers. the simple matter of moving the bed, the build surface, the heater, the bed leveling hardware, etc. all on y severely limits acceleration capabilities, makes the printer physically bigger than it is in operation (because you need bed movement space), and is otherwise not a great design imo... I'm thinking I might just replace all my bed flingers with corexy printers in the near future. I'm currently building a v0 for small part rapid prototyping (while my v2 cranks out giant parts or whole beds of parts over the course of a day or 5), and I think I might start looking for a medium sized printer (~250mm build volume) to replace my ender 3 soon as well. I thought about converting it to a rook or a switchwire or something, but at this point, because it's well maintained, I think i might just sell it to someone beginning the hobby, and build or buy something else... the x1c is nice but expensive... i might just end up building a trident to complete the voron set heh.

I wouldn’t run all of the printers from the same pad just in case the pad fails but I would definitely convert all the printers to klipper. My printers are using pi4bs with 5 inch touchscreens that they mount to running klipper and I could never go back to printing from sd card or not having a solid web interface. My SV06 will also do a 28 minute benchy no problem but I haven’t found the limit yet either!

The sonic pad is one of my most loving printerpart. It took a benchy on an Ender 3 V2 from 51 minutes to 25 minutes, with a direct drive on top of it. No special hotends, no added gimmicks only an extra Z-axis. It took my ender 5 pro from 48 minutes benchy to 24 minutes benchy, crazy !!. The sonic pad is very easy, and knowing the results, cheap in comparison with alternatives like the PI or a pc. Also the user-friendliness and the bright overview is worth a dime. It took me (only configuration, not calibration) about half an hour to setup one printer. The calibration took another hour to do right, but then it was up and running great. The only disadvantage of the pad is that, when left unused, it goes into sleepmode and won't come out of it until the screen is touched and waited for a few seconds. That annoys me a bit, because my printers are on the first floor and before I can print, I first have to "wakeup" the sonic pad.

I really don't know of the best value. Guess it depends on the job. If you are running a print farm or just casually printjng your own stuff. I just got a v400 for 715€ new and it's an upgrade to the QQS-pro I had before. There are arguments for the Bamboo Lab printers but I am waiting if they keep innovating and how their printers stand the test of time. I rather have a printer with standard parts or at least wider support base and many resellers. I guess there will always be something better coming though I also have the feel it's more about selling the same and less optimization than in the beginning of 3D printing. Pretty satisfied with the v400 at the moment.... naturally It would be cooler if it was cheaper...like 500€ maybe with the speeder pad. Also would love an input shaping sensor to ship with the machine. For the next printer I would love the load cell leveling from the Prusa MK4 and auto tuning for the belts or fast ball screws (like 1620 screws) would be cool. Vanilla Klipper out of the box. HOT Swap hotends!!!! Toolless!!! Guess I have not answered the value question but just described my dream printer...

Well it looks like the Enders and even Prusas have gone the way of the dinos in what current tech can offer at a far better price.

I honestly didn't know the creality sonic pad could run up to 4 machines. That's much more intriguing.... I have debated getting a cheap budget used laptop(around$100- $150) to run klipper on a couple machines, but this is so much cleaner and easier.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the video. Let me ask you, I have a DIY 3d printer, it's similar to a Prusa Bear, I made it using the motherboard of a Easythreed (32bit board, pretty similar to a mks robin lite) printer that I had. I'm thinking about upgrading its motion system, removing the linear rods and using linear rails for more stable and faster prints, but I don't know if I should just make another printer with Core XY or if I should stick with the i3 style for longer. What do you think? Btw, for context, I wanted to upgrade the board and thinking of future upgrades I ended up buying a manta m8p + cb1 so I kinda have part of what I would need for a good Core XY

@zerant Жыл бұрын
Well, I got an Ender 3 used for 100€, added an Phaetus Dragonfly 50€, RaspberryPi 3B 40€, SKR E3 Mini V2 30€, BeltedZ 45€ and a Klicky Probe 2€. So in total ~270€. Then I installed klipper and printing with 200/150/100mm/s (infill/inner perimeter/outer perimeter) with 4k acceleration, with my quality slow settings :)
@thenextlayer Жыл бұрын
Impressive, and yeah, that probably wins (though I can't get a raspberry pi for those prices here), but a lot more work for beginners who don't know much about.
@zerant Жыл бұрын
@@thenextlayer Remove the Pi, add the sonic pad for 160€ divide it by 4 (since you can add 4 of them to one pad) and you are still at 270€ for 1 Ender 3. But if you just use it for one printer you are at 390€ for one Ender 3. Still worth i would say.

With Bambu Labs offering a better product at a similar price point to the Mk3S+ and Sovol and Creality (among others) offering comparable products at lower price points, it's an open question to see how long Prusa can last as a 3D printer manufacturer. Sure, they have the SL1 and their industrial printing business unit, and Printables and PrusaSlicer seem to be here to stay for the long run, but their bread and butter has been "hobbyists with cash to burn on premium hardware." Without a Prusa i4 or the long-delayed Prusa XL that can catch up to what the rest of the industry is selling, it's going to be harder and harder for them to keep their market share.

I guess my big question is what is it going to take to get other printers usable with the Sonic Pad? Given how much trouble you had with the SV06, how would someone add another Sovol printer, or your Prusa, or another non-Creality printer? Super cool video, I'm just skeptical given your admittedly tough experience.

This video could be a great discussion base for an *upcoming comparison with something like a Bambu Lab P1P, Prusa MK4 and Creality K1!* Especially when also considering print *noise, price and repairability!* I really like the upgrade path from a beginners perspective! In contrast to an expensive Prusa or Voron you can start with 250 bucks and ad that pad (with maybe a flexible enclosure) later down the road. So especially for a student, school kid or simply "another hobby beside the other 13 ones" it is much more affordable than a BL X1C or Voron 2.4 Kit. p.s. You should have added "Sovol SV06" to your video title for Sovol owners to find the video as a guide!

I used Klipper on an Ender 3 S1 Pro and it was wonderful, though I never got as far as playing with faster speeds or input shaping. I sold the S1 Pro as well as my Prusa MK3S+ and bought a couple of P1Ps and basically haven't looked back. I will never go back to a bedslinger but I'm super happy to see extra life and capabilities breathed into the ones already out there.
@WyvernDotRed Жыл бұрын
This Sovol machine is such an interesting new budget option, besides lacking a filament sensor and an easily cleanable extruder, great beginner's bedslinger. And both the above issues apply to the Prusa MINI I opted for too, but while I haven't used it yet I did get it's filament sensor upgrade and assume this machine can be upgraded too. What would be interesting is seeing how the motion system holds up, I've heard rumours of some Sovol machines having poor quality bearings and got a Prusa myself for the certainty that those are of good quality. Though as those parts are easily replacable, even if that does become an issue, replacing it down the line if needed at all still saves on the upfront cost, which helps with getting more in this hobby. The Sonic pad is also intriguing, it's some Linux tablet with seemingly well-made software powering it. In a way it reminds me of my Steam Deck, which is a similarly great device leveraging the adaptability of Linux well. While I'd personally use old laptops I have lying around if I ever do switch to Klipper, this is way harder to get working though cheaper if you know your way around Linux systems. Still a good product that deserves it's success, if I ever get my hands on one, will definitely try to run Crysis or at least Doom on it :P I'd definitely be interested in a follow-up where you attempt to upgrade the Prusa. I've helped someone upgrade their CTC Bizer, after getting going with Marlin thanks to my help they managed to get Klipper working... on the MightyBoard RevE clone board it came with. Would be interesting to see if you can get it going on the original Buddy board, which is still less of a potato than that, though either might still hit the 8-bit speed wall anyway.
