Thanks for laughing and giggling thru the movie, because that's the way it should be reacted to. Some reactors take this way too seriously. First time I saw it I couldn't stop cracking up, so witty and well written. As funny as the movie is, it's deep. You could rarely change your stars in medieval Europe, the concept was nearly unheard of. This was foreshadowing the modern world to come and I love the theme.

There is a deleted scene in which Chaucer does give a speech to the crowd while Will is in the stocks, and does win them over. It's amazing, but the director felt that the Prince Edward part seemed anti-climactic, since the crowd was already on Will's side. Since the knighting is more important to the story, Chaucer's speech was cut. I'd recommend looking it up.

Sir Hector, the knight who Heath Ledger replaced at the beginning of the movie, was ahead in points after two rounds of jousting, so all that was required was to win was to not fall off the horse (or die, of course). By Heath not falling off, his opponent could not surpass him in points.

Chaucer (Paul Bettany's character) is in real life a very famous author, who wrote the story on which this movie is (loosely) based. Chaucer wasn't a "literary" author. His "Canterbury Tales", of which "A Knight's Tale" was part, wasn't high-minded stuff for the discerning reader. No, it was earthy stuff that would entertain, full of drunkenness, literal arse-kissing, and fart jokes (which is why for the movie the post-credits scene is in fact a fart joke). The tone of the original story lent itself well to the style of movie the filmmakers wanted to make. However, the music of the time did not. They wanted to make it clear that just as jousting was the pro sports of the time, the music people were listening to was the pop music of the time, and not some stale old classical stuff as it is often now perceived. So, instead of using period music, they used well-known comparatively modern tunes. They don't state it, but I'm pretty sure that was the same idea when it came to designing Jocelyn's clothing, which definitely did not fit the period. The rules of the joust: Three points to win. You get one point for a body hit, two points for a head hit. If you knock your opponent off their horse, you get three points (thus winning the match), and get to keep their horse. However, the horse was customarily ransomed back to the losing knight, as such mounts were very expensive, and returning the horse was not only good form, but also paid for a lot of the winning knight's expenses.
