One of Britain’s finest. Whose next on the speakers podium? Tony Blair? David Starky should run for prime minister, seeing as he’s always got so much to say about politics. Or have a live debate with Tony Blair. I recall a debate that Mr Blair had with the late great Christopher Hitchens, about God and stuff. One of the best debates I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, Christopher wasn’t in the best of health at the time. But still performed outstandingly as ever and his rapier wit, charm and charisma shone through. He lost though in my humble opinion. Tony Blair is one of the most naturally gifted, astute and learned speakers, this island has ever produced. David Starky flamed him for all his reforms. But conversely says that we need to be free, to make mistakes and learn from them. Without Devolution, we may have had a breakup between Scotland and Britain. Wales and N.Ireland may have followed suit. Without the independence of the Bank of England. The 2008 crash may have been dealt with worse. Tony Blair would probably say that making it independent makes it more accountable not less. The Supreme Court allows for appealing against lesser court’s decisions and maintains uniformity across the land. David Starky criticises a Religious Renaissance, then lists the things he believes, the kernel of religion. Religion is what gave Europe the Renaissance and laid the foundations for Civilisation, and led to civil liberties, the freedom to exercise one’s self expression of faith, or lack of. He even quoted the Bible, “By their fruits Ye shall know them.” It was Tony Blair’s government that opened the curtains on the workings of government and dusted off the stuffiness of stagnancy, for better and for worse. It started the wheels of change and reform, and shook the system. The New Labour Revolution, was a counter revolution, to Maggie Thatcher’s previous counter revolution. Exercising the freedoms that Starky stands for. But if we’re going to judge a man for his work, we should do it with him in the room and able to defend his position if possible. I’m all in favour of criticising people who once were in power and for them having a chance to judge themselves. The greatest judge of all.

Without the immigrants, we would’ve collapsed, from the 2008 crash. They built and maintain half the country. It’s the lack of investment in good housing that’s the source of our woes. Also genetically, we need more diversity for the long term. But I agree that our borders should be protected and immigration stringently regulated. The methods employed by successive governments, have been direly roughshod and careless to the needs and concerns of the natives. The class system and state education system, has suppressed the development, of homegrown skill and talent.

All this may be very true, and I am dreading the coming years under a Labour government in this Age of Stupid, but talking and speechifying is not enough. It is preaching to the converted. We need action, nor more words, and some kind of civil action is necessary. I have seen comments suggesting that since Blair's b*ggeration of the constitution has prevented the present government from taking useful measures, the same will happen with the other side; however this is a false argument since the civil service, and the various quangos and bodies which have put the boot into any measures the present governmenr have attempted, few though they may have been, are left-wing, and they will be eager to do Starmer's bidding.

It’s not just about being left wing. Money is actually the big player. Was under the Nazis too. They know exactly how it’s done. The top dogs get paid really well. They know this sees them buy big homes, nice cars, furnishings, holidays. The bills grow. This bankrupts nations and top dogs know it. The pressure piles on to make more money. Laws get changed to encourage in truth, criminal meaning unlawful but legal behaviour ( exactly how the Germans operated). The authorities then block people accessing laws designed to protect them. Also what the Germans did. And they soon discovered everyone would do anything for a pay check. And worse, it happened across occupied Europe. They didn’t have the bureaucrats to administer it all, they needed French, Dutch, Danish etc to round people up and by and large they cooperated. All for a pay check.

Adam Curtis’s Century Of Self was broadcast on Primetime BBC in 2002, I’m sure some of it was questionable but it should have set off very serious alarm bells about New Labour. Truth is, most people didn’t want to know, they just wanted more of the Modern Monetary Theory ‘prosperity’ and New Labour were happy to oblige; they were voted in for another term. The greed and stupidity of so many people overreached in 2010 when they chose Ed Milliband over his more savvy Blairite brother; that set the Blairites back but the Tories absolutely F**king betrayed us over and over and over again (Traitor Dave has just given £3bn to the tyrant in Ukraine) and so it is virtually inevitable that the Blairites will be back on track. David, I’d rather have bat reserves or newt sanctuaries, than any more ticky tacky new housing estates. We wouldn’t need to build any more houses and ruin any more countryside in England, if we weren’t importing millions of new people into the country every year. Young people not being able to get on the housing ladder, house prices and house rents being astronomically expensive, absurdly long waiting times for operations, not being able to get a doctors appointment, not being able to see a dentist, the unsustainable volume of traffic on our roads, the uncontrollable level of crime, the disintegration of any social cohesion, these, and many other problems, are all symptoms of over population. And yet we are allowing a net increase of at least 800000 people per year through legal and illegal Immigration. This uni-party policy is clearly unsustainable, is truly bonkers and must stop. I fear that five more years of open borders, Labour style, will be the final nail in this country’s coffin.
@Westwoodii
@Westwoodii 2 ай бұрын
Your first sentence says we are "importing millions of new people into the country every year". Then later, you state, slightly more correctly, that annual net increase is "at least 800,000 per year through legal and illegal immigration". Which is it? In fact, legal immigration is ca. 750.000 annually, and has trebled since Brexit - so much for the claims of Brexiters that the EU was responsible for high immigration. And the legal immigration is now mainly from Africa and S Asia rather than from the EU. Non-EU immigration always was higher anyway, and the govt always had the power to control it, but never did. As for the boat people, they are a mere pinprick of a few tens of thousands, yet they are made the focus of all the rhetoric. from the right. Fourteen years of Tory rule, and people fear Labour..??
@Logiefig
@Logiefig 2 ай бұрын
You ask “which is it?”. It is both! Using approximate figures, we are importing 1250000, (anything over a million is millions in my book) losing 500000, netted down, as you concur, to 750000. Add to that 50000 boat people and you have 800000. We, who voted for Brexit, we’re promised and voted for democratic governance, the British Parliament, to take back control from an undemocratic, authoritarian governance, the EU. Being now independent of the EU, we have the power to control and tighten our own borders. The fact that the Tories have, once again, ignored their manifesto, and done the exact opposite, against the wishes of the majority, is not the fault of Brexit. England is one of (if not the most) densely and uncomfortably populated countries in the world, and another 5 years of uni-party rule, in the form of Labour this time, will only exacerbate the problem. You vote that way if you want, it’s still a free country (just) but I’ll be voting for a complete change of direction.

You vote for final ruination if you want, it’s still a free country (just), but I’ll be voting for a much needed and genuine change of direction.

Hmmm… From my decades old A level in history, my understanding has always been that that the basis of sovereignty is a sovereign parliament and an independent judiciary, both of which were undermined by the treason of the catastrophic Johnson regime. The very fact that we could have had the Brexit referendum was a demonstration of our sovereignty. Everything else is a pack of lies.

No we need a counter-counter revolution to reverse Thatcherism. You clearly don't understand modern political history. Blair was just another Neo-liberal. Mass-immigration and Wokeism are functions of Neoliberal economic policy.

One of the most important lectures of the year. It may not be 100% right, but what we desperately need, right now, is to bring together major thinkers like Starkey to work together to generate the vision for Britain that would get support from a political party and gain votes from the electorate. We cannot 'get by' on disconnected lectures and articles. It needs to be a deliberative process. The Labour victory is now near inevitable, so we have 4 years to do the work.
