It's been awhile since I've given a tour of my 1,800 m2 (half acre) off grid piece of land here in Central Portugal... so here we go!
I've owned this property since September 2020 and it's come a long way! Check my original land tour video to compare - • Tour of My Half Acre o... - but a lot has happened and I want to share the work along with my plans.
I have a lot to say so this off grid land tour is a two-parter! I hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching, please consider subscribing if you haven't already. 🙂

I like that flat area on your lower terrace. I feel your friends could visit and camp on your land there. Or maybe even host volunteers if you’re open to that. I think your poly tunnel would be great there. This way the terrace with your house could be a more tranquil space with less crowding.😊

Your pink flowers are Mesembryanthemum or commons name pig face. Comes in a range of colours from yellow, orange, pink, white, red etc, in the succulent family so super easy to propergate from cuttings. Super hardy drought tolerant plants as they originate from south Africa.

Fantastic tour!! If you are looking for any other privacy shrubbery Feijoa trees (pineapple guava) are incredibly delicious, evergreen, drought tolerant trees and you can make a hedge with them. They fruit in the late fall w pomegranate so …. Extending your fresh fruit season. Oh also….. w all that fruit on the way you might set up w your mom a sun drying station for fruit. Oh, and I also would like to add that those pea-like plant that grow on your lower terrace are awesome because they catch nitrogen from air and fix it to the ground so even if the peas are not edible you can just mulch the plants into the ground and you will have better soil. Yay!

Leaf curl - you've probably got Blue gum eucalyptus trees there. Break off some branches from that variety of gum and lay the branches in the trees with the leaf curl. The eucalyptus will stop the curl disease. I'm pretty sure it's the blue gum variety. (I'm in Australia and we use this method. Works well)

I’m not sure if this applies to Apple trees, but I have read that ants like to carry aphids up to where they will feed. The aphids bore in and leave sticky sweet residue behind that the ants then eat. The ants don’t damage the plant but the aphids do. Supposedly you can keep the ants/aphids out by putting a ring of petroleum jelly around the trunk of the tree.
@PortugalfromScratch

Peaches should be thinned to one peach every 6 inches. And apples and pears should be thinned also as too many fruit will be very small and risk breaking branches on the tree. That’s what we did on the 20 acre fruit farm I grew up on. 🇨🇦🇨🇦

A wonderful idea to share chickens and have them in the lower terrace, where they will have both sun and shade, and keep the grass down. Middle terrace, like you say, parking and maybe more trees interspersed with lower story - permaculture style - fruiting bushes? What about raised beds, for potatoes, asparagus, etc? Easier to keep the weeds down.
@PortugalfromScratch
@PortugalfromScratch 2 ай бұрын
Raised beds would be essential on that middle terrace because of the giant stone that goes through much of the area near my compost bins. But I think I can squeeze a couple more trees on there around it... let's see!

It’s also known as Boules or Bocce, similar to bowls in application tho thrown rather than bowled. The heavy metal balls that you loop thru the air to land as close to the ‘Jack’, a small target ball. The person who lands closest wins. People often aim for opponents balls to move them away or the target hall to move it away. It’s a hoot to play with friends. People often use a stony crushed base as the playing court. You could also play quoits on the court where you have an upright stick in a board and throw circles of woven rope onto the stick (ideally). As the evening proceeds the results are hilarious.

Hey there! I'm always stoked to watch your videos. You've got a lot of work ahead. We also have a farm in the same area (Castelo Branco). First things... you'll need to create some paths (trails) on your property so you can easily get around and make the most of all the land. No need to mow down all the "weeds" unless you're planning to plant something. Also, your peach tree won't last long if you don't treat it for peach leaf curl. And lastly, those little fruits will be gone in no time if you don't keep an eye on them, the birds love them!😂 Oh, and cherry trees do really well in our area. Keep up the good work!💪

I's strim around the fruit trees. Competition under citrus is not ideal for their health, though your orange would suggest that is BS it is somewhat more established 😂 Leaf curl needs to be dealt with before the leaf burst. Donut peaches is what wecall those in Australia. ❤ Nashi are beautiful with cheese and crackers. 💧💧 You seem to have a good supply of water. Almonds might be nice to add? Aha! Snap! I write as i watch the video and you just showed the almond 😂 If there are lots of ants .... watch out for aphids, sap sucking insects on the new growth, ants will farm them 😢😢😢😢 The grapes may have been watered from the leak? I'm intetested in knowing more about your alcoholic strawberry tree 😂😂😂 what was its name again please? I've been looking at addng what is known here as an Irish strawberry tree. I think looking at transferring your veg garden to a lower terrace and having the current one more for trees and entertaining

Hello there! About your concerns regarding ants on the apple tree. The biggest problem (other than them eating of your fruit God forbid :-D) is really under ground. If they decide to live among the roots of your tree they will probably cause problems because they dry out the root system. Not sure what you can do about it if you don´t want to use regular anti ant-products but I don´t think that the substances in those products will pass over to the apples in a way that will be harmfull for you.

Fun enjoyable tour….thank you for sharing! Scary Well, hidden in the tall grass with no safety top?….what happens if animals fall in, person falls in by accident because they don’t see it or know it’s there?? 😱😬😵‍💫😥

Yes, Portugal is littered with open wells, very dangerous especially disguised by undergrowth. Animals frequently fall in & no way to get out. 😢

There's a fence around the well, it might be hard to see due to the grass. I'll be cutting that soon, though.

A Niagara Falls Captain of the fire department and his dog died in the Vineland area here in Niagara region a few years ago. They were out walking, his dog fell in old well or hole, he tried to rescue it, both didn’t come out. It was the first time I had ever heard of anything like that. Wonder how many of those old wells, holes, are hidden in our Niagara area. Sad to think of no way to get out! I have seen others on KZbin also have open wells. Please be careful when you work around it, possibly not alone….o.k….I’ll stop doing the mom worrying thing!! lol!🤪🥰

At the very least I think they fix the nitrogen in the soil, especially when I chop them up and let them fall on the ground and mulch back in... I think!

A nice tour,but those ants on the tree are a nuisance and they can harm the trees if they carry aphids up the trees.In my country,people and farmers paint the tree trunk with a mixture of lime and copper. sulphate mixture,but small home orchards use sticky duct tape tied around the trunk to prevent them from crawling up the trees.Try them

I guess I could but it's better to catch it and let it compost down and reuse it. 🙂 Seems weird but look up 'humanure'... it turns into glorious stuff for trees!

Hi, what can I use comfrey for?
@PortugalfromScratch
@PortugalfromScratch 2 ай бұрын
You can make a great fertiliser, comfrey tea, by soaking the leaves for five weeks, I think, in water. Plus it can be used medicinally but I'm not sure how. And the leaves are great for chop and drop fertiliser and also crowd out weeds at the base of trees... lots more I think that I don't know!

What does the leaf curl mean?
@PortugalfromScratch
@PortugalfromScratch 2 ай бұрын
Bad things but I don't actually know yet! All I know is that when people se it, they look concerned and say to take off the leaves and take them far away... 😬
@NATALIE_W_

Leaf curl is caused by a fungus that attacks and distorts the leaves of peach and nectarine trees. The damaged leaves hinder the trees ability to effectively photosynthesize. Basically causing plant to starve...
