A Languedoc inspired PRS Private Stock Hollowbody II: Details and Demo

Design inspired by Trey Anastasio's signature Languedoc guitar G2 (which are nearly impossible to get). There are very few guitar in existence that have similar features to a Languedoc: 25" scale, 14" fretboard radius, 24 frets, complete hollow body with floating bridge, tailpiece, carved maple top and back with mahogany core and double bound, 2 F holes, and humbuckers.
In walks the PRS Hollowbody II. It's a VERY similar guitar besides the fixed bridge, 22 frets, and 10" radius. So naturally we did what anyone would do and hit up the Private Stock team to make some important tweaks to get us as close as possible to Languedoc vibes, while keeping the build distinctly PRS.

Treys Languadocs have a 25.5" scale length like a strat. Duncan '59s individual coil tap or coil tap and parallel series switches. It's a nice guitar and I love PRS pickups I'd probably buy one, but a swing and a miss. Doesn't sound like a Languadoc.

Languedocs G2s are 25.5". G4s are 25". Both are fully hollow and parallel braced.

@@yourefromdownsouth9728 It a huge distinction. The PRS hollowbodys are great guitars, but they are very different in the way they operate than a Languedoc. The bridge block takes away a lot of the vibration from the top which is what makes true hollowbody guitars both fun, and barely controllable. So the playing experience is very very different.

@@scottlevine5030 EXACTLY! Even the Eastwood has a small block to prevent feedback. I ordered a dockstar because it is a full hollowbody and I want that feedback style sustain only a true hollow can get!

@@ryanfox6260 You can still get the infinite sustain without the fully hollow body. Its just a bit harder. One thing I've been experimenting with on my own guitars is the thickness of the top in front of the block. The more the top vibrates, the easier feedback comes. My feeling is you want it to be accessible, but not automatic. A fully hollow guitar is kind of hard to control with a lot of gain, so I'm trying to dial in the balance.

Believe it or not, the ebony bridge on a Languedoc is glued on, not floating. I was surprised

I did not know that. Interesting. Kevin Pederson makes a similar instrument that also has the bridge glued. It makes sense from a usability standpoint. But with those non-adjustable saddles, you better be sure its in the right spot!

It’s funny that a PRS knock off of a Languedoc is more money than a Languedoc directly from Paul. Yes, they are hard to get but a factory made CNC version should be cheaper than a hand carved archtop made by one skilled luthier.

@@thezeek2745 you have to specifically ask for hand carved or it will be done on a CNC even private stock. Even if it is hand carved, why is it more expensive than the original that is done by a single person vs a team. You must own a PRS that’s why you got butthurt by my comment. PRS is the cult of the guitar world.

@@thezeek2745 Yes they do. That is the reason its not a full hollowbody. While a lot of handwork is done there, every PRS including private stock is initially shaped on a CNC. They couldn't do that if it was fully hollow. A full hollow isn't more work than what this would be if done by hand (believe me, I've made a similar guitar, to hollow out the back and sides while leaving a bridge block is a huge amount of work). They don't have the tooling there to do a braced and bent sided guitar. They have some of it in their acoustic shop, but not the molds for this style. Nor do the craftsman have the training, though some may have built such guitars on their own. So theres no way PRS can guarantee the quality control they are known for, and that their buyers expect without using a CNC for the initial carving. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of handwork, but the CNCs are precise and take the guess work out of most of the processes where a hand builder has to take a ton of time or cannot do as precisely.

Languedocs are up to $18000 for a G2 these days. Don't know how much a G4 is, but probably pretty expensive.

So I guess tuning the guitar before demoing it wasn't important ??? FFS it's painfully out of tune. The demo becomes irrelevant when all you're paying attention to is the tuning 😡
