I'm up at Mum and Dad's for a few days so Googie and I grabbed a moment between rain showers for a quick tour of her garden late summer.
This is a long, triangular garden, nearly an acre in size, which Googie designed twenty five years ago so that she could slowly abandon sections to go wild as she became too old to garden it. So far she's not abandoned a square inch, but the design tips she gives here are useful for all with gardens they like to section off to make them look bigger, to give people a view to entice a stroll, and to make sure there's room for friends and family (hedgehogs are considered both in this garden and have a much loved house of their own.)
With tips for garden design, how to treat bee stings, how to make a fig tree bear even this far north (here we are zone 7) how to frame the veg patch, what not to mind about your tropaeolum speciosum and as always featuring shrubs with no name on account of long lost labels (please ID if you can.) this is a typical tour of Googie's garden.
We are in a hurry - it might rain at any moment - so apologies if the sound is ever bad - Googie is ruthless about turning her back and walking on to the next spot of interest. Plus it's WINDY!
The boots we show are from uk.merrypeople.com
The hori hori tool we discuss is from www.niwaki.com/hori-hori/#P00...
Both boots and hori hori like to be kept clean and oiled for long term use.

Your mother has made so many beautiful projects in her garden. Everything is so beautiful and I do believe if you always have something to look forward to even if you’ve never finished, it keeps you happy and content. I’m always doing a project. I’m always busy thinking and planning it does keep me happy. Your mother has a plan. And she’s giving me hope if I keep working towards it, I will have a beautiful garden some day. When you said your 83 year old Mother I was not expecting the lady who then appeared on screen. The lady I saw shines with energy and vitality. I'm sure it's a combination of lucky genes and good life practices. I've been gardening since I was 5 so that's 64 years and I do patchwork too. Not saying I do either well! I've never had my own garden. 20 years ago when I moved to my current home the lady from the Council fixed me with a killer look and stated "single people dont do gardening" she made it sound like a rebuke. But I created my own garden here and no one objected. But enough about me. I can see where your matter of fact manner comes from. I love that red Tropealeum. Sorry wrong spell I know. That looks like a weigela to me! Loved that garden tour. Varied and beautiful.

I was horrified for a split second, hearing of Googie sitting by the groundhog den with a torch. In the USA, a torch is a flaming large stick! I had visions of the den going up in flames. We probably come from very different backgrounds, but your's and Googie's genuine enthusiasm for nature gives me a sense of kinship that I rarely feel with those around me. I live in a council flat in north London. I'm very proud of it and love making it into a proper home. As I'm upstairs, I don't have any outdoor space. However, your videos have inspired me to make more of my indoor space and find plants that can thrive in my sunny rooms. Googie's garden is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. As for the numerous plants that "shouldn't really grow" there, I do wonder if they've decided to stick around as they know they will be loved and nourished. My mum introduced me to this channel today, and we wondered if you would ever do an overhead video of the garden. It would be really interesting to see the design from that angle. Thank you for making such a lovely channel. Rose ❤

so pleased you're inspired to do more with plants in your home - I will try and do an overhead view of Mum's garden if I ever get myself a drone but am so technically inept that the drone footage my friend @arloguthriegadgetman took of the garden here in June is still not downloaded off wetransfer. x

Georgie I feel like I'm about to type you a novel. Last Spring I visited your beautiful country on a garden tour. It was spectacular. It was a trip of a life time for me. I had never been overseas. I'm happy to say we are going back in 2024 but this time will be touring the Lake District. I think this is the area that your mom lives in? I did not know that you were the author of two books. I looked up the books and I was so surprised to see the title of one of your books. The Flower Farmers year. I have owned this book since 2017. I didn't make the connection that the book was yours. I right away ordered Grow your own Wedding Flowers. Received it today. Not that I'm planning on getting married at 66 (happily married) but I knew it would be beautiful and it would be full of valuable information. I discovered your KZbin channel just a few months ago and it's one of my favorites. Today I watched several of your videos filmed at your mom's house. She has a beautiful garden and I love what you share with her. You both have a wonderful sense of humor. I lost my mom in March of this year. She was 92. One of my favorite gardening memories was one year when I was a little girl she planted the entire fence in our backyard with Moon flowers. The children in the neighborhood would come every evening and we would all wait for the Moon flowers to open. It seemed like they opened right before our eyes. Well enough is enough. LOL😊 Enjoy your visit with your dear mom!

Lovely! I have a huge bearing fig tree, which is probably 100 years old 18 miles south of Edinburgh. It was planted by the first family to own our house & is likely Brown Turkey. It gets whacked in severe winters, but always comes back. It was originally crocked and it sheltered by a wall &potting shed on two sides.

Product Description Rubromarginata' is a unique Clematis variety that produces a wealth of showy white flowers with rich vivid purple edging that sits against bi-pinnate green leaves. These unusual flowers are beautifully scented, similar to marzipan, so are a great addition to any garden where these robust climbers are perfect for trailing up walls, trellises or planting in containers for smaller gardens. Flowering from July through to September they reach a height of up to 4m but can be pruned back if needed. We recommend planting in sunny areas of the garden in well-drained, fertile soil. Tall 7cm pot grown plants supplied.

You can also drink a good shot of apple cider vinegar and it will take the pain away for bee stings.

New ladder for Googie. Better still break the old rickety one. Bees removed by a company please. My husband has 15 minutes to get to hospital since being stung by swarm.

She’s the absolute best. Took a break from the garden and watched this. Was perfect! Could that variegated shrub be a Clerodendrum trichotomum 'Carnival' Carnival Glory Bower? I have a different type but very similar.

I'm confused, I always thought fig trees needed to have their roots restricted, in something like a pot, in order for them to fruit. Now I've learned it's the opposite! No wonder the one I had for about 10 years never grew in its pot!

I think figs are just contrary - sometimes a pot - sometimes not - but if a fig is not playing a fruity game in one place clearly the skill is to move it x

Googie is amazing What she has achieved in that Garden is absolutely glorious from the age of 60 onwards. I hope I have just as much luck. I love my Garden and it’s over an acre and I love it. It’s busy I’m busy in it. What I was actually asking you for is Googie you said she was a quilter. I am too. Where are her quotes? Has she got a website or a KZbin to view? I’d love to have a look at them.

But could you tell me or give me a link to one of her quilts, and I should be able to find it from there you wonderful, I don’t know where you found all the time!!
